Hvide Sande Shipyard orders Hull Vane® for new 64m OPV
Earlier this year, Hvide Sande Shipyard (Denmark) won a public tender for the design and construction of a new 64m Offshore Patrol Vessel. As the lifecycle costs and seakeeping characteristics are very important for this vessel, Hvide Sande Shipyard worked with Hull Vane BV (Netherlands) during the bid phase.
Hull Vane® is a patented hydrodynamic appendage which converts energy from the stern wave and of the ship motions into forward thrust. CFD analyses on the hull for the 64m OPV showed that indeed, the Hull Vane® would prove to be of significant added value for resistance reduction at all speeds (>7%). Based on this preliminary analysis, Hvide Sande Shipyard decided to integrate Hull Vane® in the bid as an integral part of the design.
Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) on Monday launched the fifth and final Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) out of an order of five such vessels it is constructing for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). The vessel has been named ICGS Saksham. Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated GSL’s indigenous shipbuilding project on November 13, 2016, the defence public sector undertaking (DPSU) shipyard has handed over two OPVs to the ICG and launched the other three. “Launching” is a major construction landmark, in which the completed hull is put into water. It is followed by “outfitting” the vessel with its superstructure, electronics and combat weaponry.
BMT celebrates a year of ship design achievements
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, BMT has continued to work collaboratively with its maritime customers and partners to deliver a near business-as-usual service, and as the year draws to a close the business is celebrating a year of successful and diverse ship design project milestones and contract awards from across the globe.
From concept and design through to in-service support, throughout 2020 BMT has provided engineering consultancy for national governments on their naval procurement programmes. This includes helping to define specifications or requirements for maritime assets and reviewing evolving designs; in September, BMT was awarded a contract to conduct industry studies to advance the design of the next generation of U.S. Navy Auxiliary General Ocean Surveillance Ship (T-AGOS(X)). BMT is the Prime Contractor partnered with Philly Shipyard. BMT and Vard Marine also celebrated the acceptance of HMCS Harry DeWolf, an Arctic
