Operatives of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Marine Battalion Landing Team-4 and the Naval Forces West (Navforwest) have swooped down on a coastal town in Palawan and raided several retail establishments for selling illicit cigarettes.
The retail outlets, mostly sari-sari stores, were located in Barangay Rio Tuba in Bataraza, a southern most town in Palawan.
The raiding team led by NBI head agent Norman Decampong said about 30 master cases of assorted cigarette brands were seized from the retail stores, which were allegedly smuggled from Malaysia through the Balabac backdoor, another town in the southernmost tip of Palawan.
The Philippine Navy is looking to deploy its second missile-capable frigate, the BRP Antonio Luna (FF151), to Naval Forces West for its first mission since arriving in the country.

Commodore Donn Anthony Miraflor, commander of the Naval Forces West (NAVFORWEST), said the fishermen aboard “FB Pauline 2” were saved by the crew of BRP Emilio Jacinto (PS35) at 12 noon Monday, May 24, after their vessel suffered a hull derangement.
According to a military report, the fishermen were sailing in the area when they noticed that the fishing boat had a hole on its freeboard, causing seawater to seep in. The boat captain, Placido Asusina, called for a distress signal to alert nearby boats about their situation.
Luckily, another Filipino fishing boat, “FB Espanola,” received the distress signal and relayed their predicament to the NAVFORWEST through a radio call.
