A Charles City teacher has been nominated for national recognition.
Ann Prichard of Charles City Middle School is the only teacher in Iowa to become a finalist in the junior division for the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year award of the National History Day (NHD) National Contest in Iowa. Leigh Ann Schroeder of Rivermont Collegiate in Bettendorf has been nominated in the senior division. The award recognizes the pivotal role teachers play in the lives of students.
The nominations were revealed in a letter to Iowa Senator Joni Ernst stating, “Prichard and Schroeder have demonstrated commitment to engaging their students in historical learning through innovative uses of primary sources, implementation of active learning strategies to foster historical thinking skills, and participation in National History Day. Prichard and Schroeder are leading examples for their peers and an invaluable resource for their students.”

In 1992, Paula Coughlin was a Navy helicopter pilot when she blew the whistle on one of the biggest sexual abuse scandals in U.S. military history.
While attending a military conference in September 1991 in Las Vegas, she was assaulted by a large group of drunken male attendees in what became known as the Tailhook scandal.
Even though other women came forward with similar accusations, no one was ever prosecuted.
She recalls that when she told her commander what had taken place, “I was told, ‘that’s what you get’.”
Republicans are planning to SNUB Biden s first address to Congress - even though only 200 people can attend
Several Republicans are planning to snub President Joe Biden s first address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday
The session will fall near the 100 Day mark of Biden s presidency, but comes as only the Senate is in session and the House is not
Only 200 members are allowed to attend to accommodate for social distancing
Many Republicans, from both chambers, have already said they don t want to go
Others, have said it s Congress duty to open up the address for all members
Rep. Claudia Tenney led a group of GOP lawmakers demanding Nancy Pelosi change the date to when they are in session and open the speech to all members
President Joe Biden and red-state Republicans are star-crossed lovers.
The Biden administrationâs coronavirus pandemic rescue plans are like ardent valentines to the very voters who rejected him in November, disproportionately aiding rural red states with investments in broadband, health care, bridge repair, and straight-out stimulus cash. And yet Bidenâs overtures to Republicans are unrequited, at least in Congress. Closing in on his first 100 days in office, Biden has remained true to his vow to âfight as hard for those who did not support me as for those who did.â But the objects of his affection are still being coy.
