Lake Macquarie Business Growth Centre future secured

Lake Macquarie City Council The future of the Lake Macquarie Business Growth Centre (BGC) and small business incubator has been secured, with the Central Coast Community College officially taking over the management of the centre. Located in Gateshead, the BGC was established in 1998 operating as a not for profit organisation to support and grow small and micro businesses in Lake Macquarie City. Chair of the BGC Board Peter Hesse said he is proud of what the Business Growth Centre has achieved in the last 23 years, nurturing many local startups into successful enterprises and contributing to the local economy. “We’re proud of our many achievements and all the small businesses we’ve supported over the years. Bringing the Central Coast Community College on board ensures that the incubator is positioned to prosper and be sustainable long term and means that the BGC will be able to support even more local businesses in the future,” Mr Hesse said.

Offensive , racist Australian island to change name, but not everyone agrees

The survey found 56 per cent of the 2112 respondents did not want the name changed. Coon Island and Coon Island Point are located in a low-lying area at the head of the Swansea Channel, opposite Pelican. The area is Awabakal land, with archaeological evidence dating back at least 7800 years ago showing occupation and widespread hunting areas. Lake Macquarie City Council councillor Kevin Baker said Coon Island was named after its original inhabitant Herbert Heaney, who was a man of Anglo-Saxon origin. Herbert was a coal miner and when he used to come back out of the pit, he got a very unfortunate nickname, Baker said.

Racist Lake Macquarie place name set to be changed

A racist place name in a small New South Wales coastal community is set to be changed after a council vote on Monday night. C n Island, a nature reserve in the Lake Macquarie suburb of Swansea, will be given the name ‘Pirrita’ Island - an Awabakal word for oysters from the mangrove tree. The island was originally named after Herbert Heaney, the first permanent resident. Heaney was a miner who would come home covered with coal dust and was referred to as ‘c n’ because of his blackface. Councillors voted 8-5 in favour of the change, with the name expected to be passed by the Geographical Names Board of New South Wales.
