Glacier National Park considers radio, cell signal upgrades

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) Public review has begun for a proposal to boost radio and cellphone service in Glacier National Park in Montana, park officials said. The deadline to comment is July 11.
The proposal calls for upgrades to communications from the National Park Service, which uses outdated technology or can t reach remote areas of the park, the Missoulian reported.
Currently, cellphone service is only available in the western part of the park at Apgar and the eastern part of the park because of commercial cell towers outside the park borders.
“While recognizing that national parks provide disconnected space for many visitors, the plan also proposes a strategy for commercial cellular and/or internet access for public and NPS use in certain developed areas,” such as Many Glacier, Rising Sun, Two Medicine and Lake McDonald Lodge, park spokesperson Gina Kerzman said.
Glacier National Park Shuttle System Tickets
All passengers including children age 2 and older require a Ticket-to-Ride to board the Glacier National Park Visitor Transportation System (shuttle bus). Children age two and under do not need a ticket, but must be held on an adult’s lap. You may reserve up to 10 tickets per day. During Glacier National Park’s bus season (July 1st - September 6th, 2021) a temporary timed Ticket-to-Ride system will be in place to maintain social distance per federal guidelines, reduce wait times, and manage congestion along the Going-to-the-Sun-Road (see FAQ).
Due to reduced capacity on buses, certain stops will not be serviced in 2021. Visitors can reach the following areas using the shuttle: Apgar Visitor Center, Lake McDonald Lodge, Avalanche, Logan Pass, Sun Point, Rising Sun, Rising Sun Boat Dock, and the St. Mary Visitor Center. Sperry Chalet is perched high on the side of Edwards Mountain in a glacier basin at 6,500 feet elevation. The chalet is on the west side of the park and is most easily hiked to from Lake McDonald Lodge. In fact, the trailhead is right across the road from the lodge parking lot.
This nearly 7-mile hike gains about 32-hundred feet elevation, so it is a strenuous walk. The payoff, if you have reservations at the chalet, is a comfortable night in the mountains with three meals.
