Retailers expect Covid tourist-relaxation uplift
Fashion retailers in London have welcomed the end of quarantining for European Union and US visitors travelling to the UK, but fear the absence of VAT-free shopping could prevent businesses from capitalising on the influx of overseas spend.
On 2 August, the first passengers began arriving in the UK after rules changed to allow people fully vaccinated in the US and European Union to avoid quarantine. The change, which came in at 4am, affects those arriving from countries on the UK s amber list – except France.
Fashion retailers anticipate an uplift in tourism to the UK .
“It is great news for our business as it will definitely boost sales,” said the owner of one womenswear independent based in east London. We have been missing tourists in our store. We have already seen a number of US tourists visit the store, so over the summer, I m hoping that people will definitely make an effort to visit London and spend.”
