Kent Fawcett didn’t plan to spend hours each day in the kitchen when he started making hummus. Then his dehydrated hummus business, Local Pulse, took off.
“My bottleneck is how much I can fit into a dehydrator,” said the Kamloops-based entrepreneur. “That’s why I have to go in every single day, to do small batches.”
Yet change is coming to Fawcett’s daily hummus grind.

Hunger and food insecurity have increased worldwide since COVID-19 took hold. In December 2020, the United Nations warned of the threat of “
catastrophic global famine,” urging worldwide governments to prioritize food security and humanitarian needs in their COVID-19 response plans. The global, industrialized food supply chain is strained and fraying. Production and shipping delays are increasingly commonplace. Given the lack of substantial response by many governments to food insecurity, it has often fallen to individuals to step in and feed their communities. Neighborhood-based volunteer groups across major U.S. cities and beyond have come up with strategies to support themselves from within, working to curb hunger with creative initiatives like community free-food fridges, volunteer grocery deliveries and other mutual aid efforts.
While some of the recommendations are focused on what the city can do within its own operations, others are focused on advocating for additional supports from the provincial and federal governments, Coun. Murry Krause said. Krause was the chairperson of the select committee, and represented city council on the committee along with Coun. Cori Ramsay. The City of Prince George can t take on the whole challenge of poverty reduction alone, Krause said. In addition to an online survey, running Feb. 11 to March 19, the community engagement process will include efforts to engage with people currently accessing shelters in the city or who otherwise have barriers to participating in an online survey, Brown said.
