Chandigarh Education Dept unlikely to extend summer break

635 Deepankar Sharda Chandigarh, May 27 Amid a decline in the number of Covid-19 cases, the UT Education Department is unlikely to extend summer holidays. Though there has been no official announcement in this regard, sources maintained that the schools will be reopened again on a minimum attendance basis. Keeping in view the pandemic, the department had earlier this month announced summer vacation in government schools till June 8. “The department is unlikely to extend summer holidays. However, the final call will be taken a week prior to June 8 in the war-room meeting. As far as the department is concerned, it is expected that the schools will reopen with minimum attendance,” said a source.

Parents, schools waiting for assessment procedure after cancellation of Class X exams

 Chandigarh, April 15  A day after the central government announced to promote Class X students without conducting examinations, owing to Covid-19 pandemic, schools and parents are now in a fix over the procedure for assessment of marks.  While the decision was welcomed by many students, there are few who are also worried about their percentile. Schools and officials meanwhile are waiting for CBSE guidelines, however they are also view that the assessment should be made on some concrete basis.  “The whole exercise (cancelling the examinations) has been unnecessary. Out of 100, only handful of students would be happy with the decision. Also, there are many students, who skipped their pre-boards and other internal examinations and this process, now how would we assess their performance,” said HS Mamik, President, Independent School Association (ISA) Chandigarh.

Testing to begin in UT schools

Chandigarh, March 10 As cases of Covid-19 continue to rise in Chandigarh, the UT Health Department has decided to conduct testing in city schools from this week. UT Adviser Manoj Parida confirmed that the facility of Covid-19 testing would soon be provided in the city schools wherein students and teachers would be encouraged to get themselves voluntarily tested for the virus. The Health Department, in consultation with the Education Department, will make a plan to send mobile testing teams to schools. “It is important to find out whether students are carriers of infection or not because the transmission will pass on to the elderly at home. Mostly, children are asymptomatic and can be potential carriers of the virus,” said Dr Amandeep Kaur Kang, Director, Health Services.
