If you re a big science fiction and fantasy book fan, odds are you ve heard of N.K. Jemisin. Not only is she the first author to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel three years in a row for her
Broken Earth trilogy most recently picking up the Hugo Award for Best Novelette for
Emergency Skin but her
Inheritance Trilogy, is being optioned to be adapted into a television series.
However, her latest project finds her doing something a little different, as she teaches a self-guided course on writing fantasy and science fiction for MasterClass. Over the course of 16 video lessons, Jemisin walks interested students through the basics of building their own fictional worlds and crafting compelling characters, much like those found in her own writing. For the bestselling author, it was a chance to return to her roots as a teacher, having taught courses on other subjects during her time as a career counsellor and a counselling psychologist.

In a press release, MasterClass announced that three time Hugo award winning author N.K Jemisin will share her knowledge and expertise by conducting one of her own classes for the educational subscription platform. Jemisin will join the likes of authors like Neil Gaiman and Margaret Atwood, where students access pre-recorded tutorials and lectures by experts in various fields. Her class will explore fantasy and scientific fiction writing which includes learning the process of world building, constructing engaging characters, and creating new mythologies.

She’s heading up a course on the platform called Fantasy and Science Fiction Writing.
The educational startup launched back in 2015, selling online video courses around certain skills from notable celebrities, like acting (Dustin Hoffman), singing (Christina Aguilera), and writing (James Patterson), with each of those instructors developing their course and filming 10-20 short videos, along with some supplementary materials. Since then, it’s built out that bench of celebrities, and provides courses across a wide range of fields.
