Over the decades, Saskatchewan has seen many landscape changes, and unfortunately, many of these have resulted in lost wetland benefits. Saskatchewan does not have a wetland inventory and is the only Prairie province without a wetland policy. There have been positive developments of late, and signs that Saskatchewan is moving in a direction that identifies the importance of these vital resources to the people of our province are favourable. The formation of the Global Water Futures Program (GWF) is one promising example. GWF https://gwf.usask.ca/ is a University of Saskatchewan-led research program that will deliver risk management solutions to manage water futures in Canada and other cold regions where landscapes, ecosystems and the water environments are changing as a result of global warming.
Environmental Impact Assessment: Whither Taiwan’s wetlands?
Wetlands need to be protected because they filter contaminants from wastewater, soak up excess water, which helps mitigate flooding, and reduces the temperature of the immediate surroundings

Next Tuesday, Feb. 2, will be World Wetlands Day (WWD). An annual event since 1971, WWD celebrates the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat in Ramsar, Iran in 1971, and tries to raise awareness about the ecological importance of wetlands.
Between 1.2 and 1.6 percent of Taiwan’s total land area is wetland of some kind. The majority of wetlands, including all the larger ones, are on the west coast. Perhaps the best known inland bog is Fataan Wetland (馬太鞍濕地) in Hualien County’s Guangfu Township (光復). Taiwan is dominated by mountains, but very few wetlands are more than 100m above sea level.
Vietnam responds to World Wetlands Day The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) has asked other ministries, agencies and localities to take action in response to World Wetlands Day (February 2).
In a document issued on January 18, the MONRE ordered stepping up the communications work to raise public awareness of the significance of wetlands, and called for efforts in preserving and using wetlands sustainably.
It also suggested integrating wetland preservation into programmes, planning schemes and development projects.
World Wetlands Day 2021 highlights the contribution of wetlands to the quantity and quality of freshwater on the planet. Water and wetlands are connected in an inseparable co-existence that is vital to life, human wellbeing and the health of the planet.
