Senators debate controversial memo recommending juniors, seniors not return in spring

(Screenshot: JACKIE HENLEY/The Stanford Daily) on February 17, 2021 After the release of an Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU) executive memo that drew criticism from some upperclassmen, Senators and attendees argued both in favor of and against the measure at Tuesday evening’s Undergraduate Senate meeting. The ASSU executives’ memo, which was released on Feb. 12, recommended against bringing juniors and seniors to campus for spring quarter due to recent reports of noncompliance with Stanford’s campus compact.  At the meeting, Stanford Review editor-in-chief Maxwell Meyer ’22 expressed concerns that the memo had not represented the Stanford student body in its recommendation. (Chart: SOPHIE ANDREWS/The Stanford Daily) on February 18, 2021 According to a new survey sent out by the Undergraduate Senate, 60% of responding undergraduates “strongly agree” with allowing juniors and seniors to return to campus if medical experts deemed the risk acceptable, and only 8% of responding students “strongly disagree.” The survey is still open to results and updating live. As of 10:00 PM on Thursday, the survey had 1298 responses, with 1039 responses from undergraduates, including 363 juniors and 373 seniors.

The survey asked about participants’ happiness with their current home situation and opinions on the return of juniors and seniors to campus. It also left space for additional comment. The survey, sent to all Stanford students, is still collecting results. As of 7 p.m. on Friday, the survey had 1,361 responses with 1,051 responses from undergraduates including 367 juniors and 379 seniors. The margin of error for undergraduates was 3%, and the graduate sample, 308 respondents, was not large enough to be represent

Letter to the Community: ASSU virtual elections

Dear Stanford Community, The ASSU is proud to continue our annual elections, despite the challenges that an entirely virtual environment poses. We encourage everyone to participate, whether by running for a position or by voting. Below, we outline the processes that will take place this year. There are three different processes: Candidate elections: Students may run for and vote for positions on the Undergraduate Senate, Graduate Student Council, Class President slates or ASSU Executive. Annual grants: Voluntary Student Organizations (VSOs) seeking funding need to gain student approval. Referendums: Students may propose legislation to be adopted by the ASSU. The ASSU may also propose legislation.
