South Darfur governor grants additional powers to military forces after tribal fighting

January 21 - 2021 NYALA / KHARTOUM Rizeigat tribesmen in North Darfur (Albert González Farran for UNAMID) On Tuesday, Mousa Mahdi, the wali (governor) of South Darfur, confirmed that the state’s security committee granted additional security powers to the military forces deployed in the south of the state. They are now allowed to use force to control the security situation in the region, in the aftermath of the armed conflict between the Rizeigat and Fallata tribes. During his visit to the area where Tuesday’s events took place, Mousa Mahdi announced that the state security committee had issued strict directives to military commanders to arrest those involved in fuelling the conflict.

56 killed in South Darfur attack

January 20 - 2021 KHARTOUM Fallata leaders report that 56 of their people were killed in South Darfur (Social media) Fallata leaders reported yesterday that the death toll of the attack launched by Rizeigat gunmen on El Tawil village in South Darfur on Monday has risen to 56 people. At least 37 were wounded. Ibrahim Mousa, spokesperson for the Fallata tribe, said at a press conference in Khartoum yesterday that the armed attackers, were driving cars and riding horses and camels. The attack was preceded by large gatherings of Rizeigat fighters who then headed east in the direction of El Tawil village, Mousa said. He criticised the failure of the government forces to intervene, despite the fact that the army garrison is only five kilometres away from where the attack took place.
