To the editor: The temporary closure of the High Peaks Information Center, operated by the Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) at Heart Lake, does indeed highlight the importance of providing good information to incoming hikers, as Zack Floss pointed out in his Feb. 17 column. Thousands of hikers show up at Adirondack trailheads every year with only the foggiest of notions of where they are going and how to get there. The Mountain Club is doing a great job catching many of those people and setting them straight. The club is also helping to build out a robust trail info network consisting of local governments, other nonprofits (eg. Adirondack 46ers and Friends of Hurricane Mountain), commercial stores and the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
The best virtual events in Toronto this week

Toronto artist Witch Prophet is doing double duty this week, performing as part of Wavelength Winter Festival and co-curating Long Winter TV with her Heart Lake Records.
In-person concerts and events are on hold as Toronto stays locked down for COVID-19, but there are still plenty of great virtual events to keep you entertained from your living room. This week’s best virtual events include Black History Month panels and theatre/TV projects, a couple of music series and more.
(Photo provided by Zack Floss) As of late last week, the Adirondack Mountain Club temporarily closed the Loj and the High Peaks Information Center due to COVID-19. This sort of closure is by no means a surprise at this point in the pandemic. We’ve seen it happen to a number of restaurants and stores in the area, and each has had its own impact on the community. The closure of the Loj, though, and especially the HPIC had a different sort of effect this week. It limited a critical source of information and access to the High Peaks wilderness  one that I think many often take for granted.

Feb 16, 2021 One of the main jumping-off points for trips in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks is closed after someone connected to the facility tested positive for the coronavirus.
The Adirondack Loj, outside of Lake Placid, and the High Peaks Visitors Center have been closed since last Friday and will remain closed until further notice. The Adirondack Mountain Club, which operates the facilities, says the parking lots will remain open, as will the public restrooms. Ski and snowshoe rentals will not be available.
