Fireworks return to downtown Lynchburg
LYNCHBURG, Va. – To honor Independence Day, fireworks are returning to downtown Lynchburg for the first time since 2018.
The colorful display will take place at 9:15 p.m. on Friday, July 2. You can watch the show from areas including Riverfront Park and the Bluffwalk.
The Downtown Lynchburg Association is hosting the event, thanks in large part to BWX Technologies. Small businesses will offer food and drink specials, but you can also bring your own.
“Make sure you get to downtown early. I wouldn’t expect to arrive at nine o’clock and be able to make it to Riverfront [Park]. Get here, bring a picnic or go to dinner, and set up space wherever you want to be so that you can make sure at 9:15 you’re ready for the festivities,” said Downtown Lynchburg Association Executive Director Ashley Kershner.

The Downtown Lynchburg Association released their 2020 annual report to show the impact.
Ashley Kershner, executive director, said small businesses have suffered.
“[With] that said, when we look at our colleagues across the country and what their downtowns are enduring, I’m actually very proud,” said Kershner.
Through their recovery initiative, the association created a gift card program, giving away $45,000 so far to spend at 40 participating businesses. The nonprofit also established takeout patios and other promotional content to help concerned owners.
Business professionals often enjoy networking events where they can talk shop, share exciting innovations happening in the field or potentially meet new clients.
But when 2020 put an immediate stop to all these in-person connections, local establishments, organizations and colleges used the year to pivot and find new creative ways to connect.
The Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance has about 750 members from all over the region. It holds many in-person events throughout the year, such as its A.M. Alliance networking event held on the first Friday of the month and its quarterly Restaurant After Hours event.
During 2020, it launched a new virtual Cocktails and Commerce networking event and a Wednesdays @ 1 series which brought on business professionals, Centra staff and politicians to keep members in the loop about important updates during the pandemic.
