ALPENA An Alpena County man took the next step toward trial following a court hearing on Thursday in Alpena’s 88th District Court.
Nathan Benton, 37, is accused of sexually assaulting a child on multiple occasions, when the girl was 8.
The News does not identify alleged victims of sexual assault.
Defense attorneys Alan Curtis and Matt Wojda pressed the child and the Michigan State Police trooper in charge of the investigation, both of whom testified on Thursday, about information the child did not disclose when first interviewed but later testified to in court.

ALPENA A man will spend at least 10 years behind bars after accepting a plea deal in the sexual assault of an Alpena teen.
Though declaring himself innocent, Jeremiah McLean on Tuesday pleaded no contest to accusations that he bound, raped, and strangled a 15-year-old girl at an Alpena cemetery in June.
The News does not identify victims of sexual assault.
At the request of the girl’s family, Judge Ed Black sentenced McLean to 10 years in prison, far short of the 18 years recommended by the Michigan Department of Corrections and the life sentence possible with a first-degree rape charge.

A string of days with subzero temperatures have brought the Salvation Army in Marshalltown to open a warming center.
The Salvation Army, 107 W. State St., has a warming center set up in its Fellowship Hall for people looking to get out of the cold. It is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The warming center at the Salvation Army Worship and Community Center is open to everyone with no questions asked.
