Businesses in Shawnee County can soon apply for local relief

The Joint Economic Development Organization set aside $700,000 in December to help small businesses. Its small business task force has approved the application process that soon will allow most businesses in the county to apply for aid. The application won’t be active on any one specific day but must be live by April 19. “I wholeheartedly believe that we are going to make a difference in some local businesses,” said task force member and Shawnee County commissioner Aaron Mays. Who is eligible for the grant? This grant will be less stringent than Topeka’s small business relief fund, so much so that Corrie Wright, Topeka s director of housing services, said the city might contact businesses rejected from Topeka’s program and encourage them to apply for the JEDO program.

Where are masks required in Kansas, Shawnee County and Topeka?

Anyone in Shawnee County can opt out of the mask mandate, but the city of Topeka and Shawnee County buildings have slightly different rules.  Commissioners voted on Monday to allow any party in Shawnee County to opt out of the mask mandate. That could mean businesses, churches or nonprofits might not require masks. Commissioner Aaron Mays introduced the amendment so the county could have additional legal protection. Senate Bill 40 made it possible for people to sue the county over mask mandates. How did mask requirements in Shawnee County change? Recent votes by the commissioners made COVID-19 health orders recommendations rather than restrictions and allowed “any party” to opt out of the mask mandate.

Error forces Kansas hospital to throw out 570 vaccines doses

Error forces Kansas hospital to throw out 570 vaccines doses By HEATHER HOLLINGSWORTH and JOHN HANNAMarch 12, 2021 GMT MISSION, Kan. (AP) A Kansas hospital had to throw away 570 doses of a coronavirus vaccine because of a refrigeration mistake, officials say. Lawrence Memorial Hospital said in a news release that city and county health officials transferred the doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to the hospital on Wednesday. The hospital then put them in a freezer, not realizing they were thawed. Confusion arose because most doses are shipped frozen, but the health department had received this batch in a refrigerated state. The hospital reached out to Johnson & Johnson for guidance and was instructed that the doses would have to be discarded.
