Commissioners authorize job description for economic development position
The Leavenworth Times
Leavenworth County commissioners have asked the county administrator to prepare a job description for a new position that will oversee economic development activity.
Commissioners have discussed creating an economic development director position for the county government. However, commissioners have not settled on an exact title for the job.
Commissioners plan to use money collected through a property tax mill levy designated for economic development to pay for the new position. In the past, money collected through this mill levy has been used to provide funding to the Leavenworth County Port Authority and Leavenworth County Development Corporation.

The director of Leavenworth County Community Corrections has had trouble finding people who want to serve on advisory boards.
Community Corrections Jamie VanHouten spoke with county commissioners Wednesday about vacancies on the juvenile advisory board for Community Corrections as well as the adult advisory board.
Community Corrections operates probation services in the county for juvenile and adult offenders.
Commissioners voted Wednesday to appoint someone to fill a vacancy on the Community Corrections advisory board for juvenile services. But they decided to wait two weeks to fill openings on the advisory board for adult services in order to allow time for additional people to apply.
County approves building codes
The Leavenworth Times
Leavenworth County commissioners have approved building codes for unincorporated areas of the county. But commissioners have excluded two townships from the codes.
Commissioner Jeff Culbertson asked Wednesday for Easton and Kickapoo townships to be excluded from the building codes.
The two townships are in the district he represents. Culbertson said his district is the only one in the county that has seen population decreases in recent years. He suggested excluding the two townships to help promote economic development in his district.
Culbertson said he spoke with the fire chiefs of the two townships and they do not have a problem with the townships being excluded from the building codes.
