HARARE, May 20 (Xinhua) Zimbabwean police on Thursday decried rampant smuggling of precious minerals out of the country, particularly gold, and appealed for high-tech equipment to enable the force to root out the vice.
Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga said the country s porous border, and lack of appropriate vehicles and modern equipment were inhibiting the police from curbing the smuggling of precious minerals out of the country.
He was speaking before a joint parliamentary portfolio committee of mines and defense and home affairs, which sought to understand why smuggling of the country s precious minerals was on the increase.

Kondwani Nankhumwa, leader of Opposition in the Parliament has called on Tonse Alliance led government to fulfill its campaign promises made to Malawians as they were seeking votes for the infamous June 23, 2020 fresh presidential elections.
Nankhumwa made the call yesterday in the August House when he was responding to President Lazarus Chakweraâs State of Nation Address delivered on May 12, 2020, saying Malawians are impatiently waiting to see the promises being fulfilled.
Nankhumwa said the Tonse Alliance ought to be held accountable based on what it promised Malawians prior to its ascendancy to power.
He said: “Among a litany of the promises, the youths were promised 1 million jobs within the first 12 months, paying the elderly monthly grants and K70 million loan basket under the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF).”
