She still lives in a town about 50km from the gulag village where her family was sent in the 1940s after the outbreak of World War II. Despite the rehabilitation of her exiled family, the denunciation of Joseph Stalin and the collapse of the Soviet Union, she has never been able to leave. “It’s been a lifetime sentence,” she said during an interview from a small town in Kirov Oblast, 1,000km east of Moscow.
