CHICAGO
– The Chicago Cubs joined forces with Hyde Park native, Nikko Washington, on a limited-edition apparel collection in celebration of Black History Month that honors the accomplishments of two Black American ballplayers, Buck O’Neil and Ernie Banks, to the game of baseball and supports the Chicago community through donations to a local nonprofit. Fans can purchase items from the limited-edition collection starting Friday, February 5.
Banks and O’Neil, two of the club’s award-winning athletes and notable trailblazers, broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of Black American ballplayers to succeed in the major leagues through their efforts and sacrifices. O’Neil, who spent 33 seasons (1956-88) with the Cubs as a scout, coach and instructor, became the first African American coach in MLB history when he was named to the Cubs’ major league coaching staff in 1962. The question we face every time the Cubs sign someone now to a big league deal: is that all the scratch left available? Would the Cubs commit almost $3 million of their scant remaining dollars to a reliever? Did the reported opening up of the baseball budget mean that Jed Hoyer now had enough to sign a lot of these one-year guys to address a variety of holes, and he simply had the money set aside for a good reliever? We’ll see, depending on what comes next (or doesn’t). Payroll, you’ll note, is still down tens and tens and tens of millions from last year.

• This is one of those “I’m not really concluding anything” points, but it seems like interesting context: If you’re talking about salary out, and salary replaced, the Cubs essentially traded Kyle Schwarber for Joc Pederson and Trevor Williams. Good deal? Bad deal? I mean, I think Schwarber has the highest 2021 upside of anyone in that trio, but I also think Pederson probably has the higher floor than Schwarber, given his better non-offensive value. So even that might’ve been a fair swap for many folks. Williams, to be sure, might continue his descent into being flat-out not worth having on the roster. But at 28, and two years removed from being really dang good, that’s a swing I like having on the roster. (
