Juneau residents enjoy the annual polar dip. Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The New Years Day tradition of jumping into the freezing water at the Auke Recreation Area won t happen due to the pandemic.
The organizers opted to cancel the event for this year due to COVID-19.
Organizers said it would be difficult to observe social distancing requirements as the plungers go into the water.
Carl Brodersen said the geography with thin access trails and a high tide, its popularity and likelihood of a crowd, and the false sense of safety from an outdoor event, were the main reasons for the decision.
