The Northern Stars have continued their statement start to the ANZ Premiership, claiming their fourth win in as many games with a 59-45 win over the Southern Steel.
With the two teams coming into the contest having conceded the fewest goals through the opening three rounds, the defences were expected to play pivotal roles.
While both sides made strong starts and battled out a relatively close first quarter, the platform was laid by the imposing Stars defence of goal keep Anna Harrison and goal defence Elle Temu, who combined for four intercepts and seven rebounds in the game.
The 59 goals scored by the Stars was their most this season from four games. One of the rare disappointing aspects was the accuracy of Silver Ferns goal shoot Maia Wilson. Wilson converted 33 goals, but would have been frustrated with her accuracy, missing 10 attempts and shooting at just 77 per cent – well down on her normal percentage, usually in the 90s. Playing against her former Steel team-mates, Silver Ferns wing attack Gina Crampton again led the way for the Stars with another polished performance. The 47-test Fern has been in brilliant touch to begin the new season, leading the
Stuff MVP standings. She has been the standout player of the opening four weeks.

Weathering an early storm, the Robinhood Stars remained unbeaten after piling on the pressure to complete a comfortable 59-45 win over the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel in Auckland on Sunday.
The arm-wrestle on show during the opening stanza gave an early glimpse of what looked as if a tight a close tussle could be on the cards. However, the home side ground their way into a position of dominance as the previously high-flying Steel were given a reality check against the slick Stars.
Led by their defensive end in this match, the Stars reputation as the team to beat continued to gain momentum as they maintained a perfect four-from-four record despite not having the greatest shooting percentages against the Steel.
