Kalamazoo nonprofit develops resident leaders to revitalize neighborhoods one block at a time

KALAMAZOO, MI “We don’t let crime grow up here anymore,” said Vine neighborhood resident Martha Gonzalez.
Now it’s flowers, blossoming on every street corner and in the Oak Street Community Garden which thrives in the heart of the neighborhood where an old liquor store was torn down a decade ago.
Gonzalez, a resident leader with Building Blocks of Kalamazoo, said when she first moved into the neighborhood 10 years ago, it was a scary place filled with all sorts of crime, violence, prostitution and hard drugs. Now, she said, it’s a place quickly filling up with families.
