Diversity and familiarity best describe the 2021-22 Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra season, which will kick off in September with a full orchestra and audience.
Artistic advisor/conductor Bramwell Tovey described planning the season – the philharmonic s full return after the COVID-19 pandemic first shuttered, then minimized in-person shows – as a complex endeavor, and he worked to include the “familiar, intriguing and unusual.”
“We always look at what has and hasn’t been done in a while, but, after a major event, the familiarity of masterpieces is something people are anxious to hear,” he noted, adding he tried to encapsulate new and classic into each performance.

The Santa Barbara Symphony s groundbreaking season of presenting live music together safely on stage continues on Saturday, April 17 at 7:00 pm (with an encore matinee on Sunday, April 18 at 3:00 pm) with Fanfare for the Common Man recorded live from the stage of the Granada Theatre, with no audience.
This concert celebrates American music and showcases a diverse range of composers and performers and builds upon the Santa Barbara Symphony s commitment to spotlighting the range of symphonic music created in America.

Conductor Marin Alsop talks to CPR Classical s Karla Walker about the women composers you should be listening to right now.
Classical music conductors are hugely influential in determining what music you hear at concerts. They are the single biggest gatekeepers for whether most living composers will have their works performed or not. Conductor Marin Alsop stands firm in her commitment to championing the works of women composers. I try to program with diversity in mind, always adhering to my principle that I have to believe in the music in order to champion it, she said.
We asked Marin for a list of 10 women composers we should know, but she cautions, “there are at least 50 who I can think of off the top of my head who are worth listening to and deserve to be represented.
Fresno Philharmonic

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s “Front Row” series travels from Fallingwater to The Andy Warhol Museum and incorporates Pittsburghers such as Fred Rogers and Thaddeus Mosley. Episodes showcase the music of composers ranging from Beethoven to Pittsburgh native and Julliard student Hannah Ishizaki.
Under normal circumstances, the dynamic video series co-produced by Flying Scooter Productions would be an extraordinary accomplishment. In a pandemic, it’s been a necessity as well.
