Argentina capitalized on an early goal and managed to stave off Brazil s onslaught to win the Copa America final 1-0 on Saturday at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The win ended a 28-year major trophy drought for Argentina, giving star forward Lionel Messi his first tournament triumph with the senior national team.
Argentina struck in the 22nd minute when Rodrigo De Paul sent a long ball to Angel Di Maria, who finished it off by chipping it over the head of Ederson in goal. Brazil had multiple opportunities to score the equalizer, with a goal by Richarlison ruled out for offside in the 52nd minute. Minutes later, Richarlison had another chance when he struck from close range only to be denied by Emiliano Martinez.

Brazil forward Gabriel Jesus was issued a red card for a high kick in the 48th minute of the team s 1-0 win over Chile in the Copa America quarterfinals on Friday in Rio de Janeiro.
Chile defender Eugenio Mena went to head the ball when the 24-year-old Manchester City forward charged in and struck him in the face with his right foot. The red card means Jesus will be suspended for Brazil’s semifinal matchup against Peru on Tuesday. Peru beat Paraguay on penalty kicks in Friday’s other quarterfinal.
