Keeping your pets safe in the heat - WXXV News 25

WXXV News 25 August 3, 2021 When it comes to extreme heat, it’s not only people who are at risk, it’s the furry friends in our lives as well. Just like humans, animals are at risk for a number of heat related illnesses, including heat strokes, which can be fatal. One thing to keep in mind on hot days is when you take your dog out for a walk, if the pavement is too hot, it can actually burn the pad of your dog’s paws. Dr. Alice Xenachis and Dr. Jason Gulas of Fur Baby’s Veterinary Hospital in Biloxi tell News 25 the impact from taking your dog out in the heat can be very dangerous. “I’ve seen a lot of heat strokes happen on the weekend. In the middle of the day when people decide to go on a walk on the bridge or something and the heat in the middle of the day, even for 10 or 15 minutes, if the dog is running for just a few minutes, it can be devastating and they can go into heatstroke where their body just cannot tolerate those high temperatures.”
