No plan to revitalize Calgary’s downtown will succeed without addressing parking. We are a winter city for most of the year and very few people ride bikes in freezing temperatures. Buses are too infrequent and slow, especially in off-hours, and the LRT has parking issues of its own.
If city council wants people to live, work, eat, shop and attend events downtown, it needs to provide reasonable parking. There are too many good alternatives outside downtown where parking is free and convenient. Tear down some of the older, almost empty office buildings and build parking structures, either alone or as part of new mixed-use development. Build parking on the outskirts of downtown where there is easy access to a train in the LRT fare-free zone or expand the zone. The city could also offer free parking downtown after business hours and on weekends.
