In. Glor have a reason to celebrate. Goonnys never say die. This is this is the cbs evening news with jeff glor. In common than divides us. Reporter doug jones won, but not because roy moore supporters stayed home. Steve flowers is alabamas leading political analyst. The rural white voters voted very heavily. And very heavily for roy moore. They did. But they were offset by an astronomical turnout of African American voters. Reporter exit polls showed a whopping 96 of African American voters chose jones. He also won two other key demographics, women and younger voters, like zoey austin, who voted in her very first senate race. I wanted to vote on the side of right to show that there is some good still in the hearts of the people of alabama. Reporter jones was able to energize a traditionally weak Democratic Network here. Were going the make this happen, guys. Reporter he was buoy by millions in outside money and outspent moore on campaign ads by 51. Will we make their abuser a a million phone calls and jones had multiple Campaign Appearances a day while moore shied away from cameras, dogged by allegations of Sexual Misconduct with teenage girls. There is no right to believe youre a person of the opposite sex. Reporter flowers says moores controversial comments on everything from samesex marriage to slavery became too much for some moderate republicans. They were also upscale suburban urbane republicans who did not want roy moore the image he gave the state of alabama. Reporter so they put in a writein . A lot of them voted for doug jones. Reporter lifelong republicans. You have a teenage daughter. I certainly do. Reporter how heavy did those allegations weigh in your decision . Very heavily. I would say that was the majority of my feelings. Reporter doug jones could also thank alabamas senior senator, republican shelby shelby, who said he wrote in not vote for moore. Writeins accounted for nearly 2 of the vote, giving jones the advantages. Jeff . Glor manny, thank you very much. So mr. Moore will not be going to washington. Nancy cordes has reaction on capitol hill. I look forward to having mr. Jones here. Reporter republicans were so relieved today youd think they picked up a seat. Strange to say i guess for my side of the aisle, but i thought it was a great night for america. Alabamians didnt want someone who date 14 year old girls. Reporter any anger they had was directed at steve bannon. This is greater than judge moore. Reporter for backing roy moore over the more mainstream g. O. P. Incumbent. This guy does not belong on the national stage. He looks like some disheveled drunk that wandered on to the political stage. Reporter on breitbart radio, bannon said he simply got outhustled at the end. One thing you are to give a hat, the dnc slipped in here and did an amazing job of word, ground game. Things are looking good for us. Reporter jubilant democrats said a win in deep red alabama shows they can easily pick up seats in arizona and nevada next fall and retake control of the senate. Pennsylvanias bob casey said the g. O. P. Is on the ropes. I do think theyve got to examine how a nomination process led not only to roy moore but to the nomination of president trump. He was their nominee, as well. Reporter but republicans like iowas Chuck Grassley insisted last nights loss had to do with one flawed candidate, nothing more. Whats the main lesson you draw from the loss in alabama. Oh, pretty clear that you should not be involved with Sexual Harassment of women. Republicans are grateful they wont all get tied to roy moore when they run for reelection in 2018. They also avoid a messy ethics investigation and what could a u. S. Senator since the civil war. Jeff . Glor nancy cordes, thank you. Joining us now, john dickerson, anchor of face the nation, and from the white house Margaret Brennan. John, first of all, your takeaways from last night . Well, we dont want to go too far in overreading the result in alabama, as one republican put it. We dont expect to have anybody accused of assaulting underage people in any of these other races. But the major takeaway for republicans is what kind of candidates are they going to nominate in other states where there are going to be close election, in nevada and arizona . Are they going to have hardline candidates that thrill the primary audiences or ones that can win in the general election. For democrats, the takeaway is in the virginia governors race and in this race, the president thrilled the democratic base, got them to turn out. If thats true in 2018, thats great news for democrats. Glor marking margaret, the president did endorse roy moore, but then he initially backed another candidate. How is the president reacting to this . The president is disappointed. He said a win is wane. Hi called doug jones and invited him to the white house. Roy moore was his preferred candidate. White house officials are trying to distance the president from him, emphasizing they see this as alabama voters rejecting roy moore and not the trump agenda. President trump tweeted himself today that he always knew roy moore would not win a general election. Glor john, in your estimation, what does it mean for the president now . The president was skilled in the private sector at putting his name on things and they did well. Well, in this race, he tried to do that, it didnt help roy moore. And remember, roy moore ran as a kind of trumplike candidate, unapologetic, abrasive, telling truth to people whether they liked it or not. But also the president put his support behind the virginia gubernatorial candidate, and two pieces of legislation, the replacement of the Affordable Care act and this tax cut have been endorsed by president but they are very unpopular. So far his skill in the private sector has not translated into the presidency. Glor and margaret, what does this mean now for the president ial agenda . Well, the president was frank. He said republicans have just razor thin margins in congress and this loss makes it harder. As the leader of the party, i would have liked to have the seat. I want to endorse the people that are running, but i will tell you that to me its very, very important to get this vote. That means the president may now have to reach across the aisle to moderate democrats like doug jones in order to win votes for his 2018 agenda item, including welfare reform and infrastructure. Jeff . Glor Margaret Brennan and john dickerson, thank you both very much. Deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein defended special Council Robert mueller today before the house judiciary committee. Republicans say muellers investigation of russian against president trump, and they point to Text Messages from a lead f. B. I. Investigator as proof. Justice reporter paula reid joins us now with more on. This paul last, so first of all, how did these Text Messages come to light . Reporter well, jeff, the justice departments Inspector General found the Text Messages while investigating how the f. B. I. And department of justice handled matters related to the 2016 campaign. These texts between f. B. I. Counterintelligence agent peter strzok and senior f. B. I. Lawyer lisa page strongly criticized donald trump during the campaign. They called him an idiot and prospects of a Trump Victory terrifying. Now, strzok was a top official on f. B. I. Investigation of hildremyrs use of Hillary Clintons private email use as secretary of state. After they strzok and page joined the investigation into russian meddling. Special counsel Robert Mueller removed strzok, but both he and page are back working at f. B. I. Glor how do these messages affect the investigation . Republicans are trying the use these texts to undermine the credibility of the special counsels probe, but Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein, the only man who can fire mueller, told Congress Today that he has seen no reason to remove him. He also noted that when mueller found out about these Text Messages, he dismissed strzok, but rosenstein said he is still waiting for the final report from the Inspector General before deciding whether he needs to take any further action. That report is expected by april. Jeff . Glor paula reid reporting tonight. Paul last, thanks very much. Tonight another of trumps political aides is out. Omarosa manigaultnewman. Mr. Trump famously fired her three times from his tv show the apprentice. Well go back now to Margaret Brennan, who is still at the white house. Margaret, there was some drama surrounding this. Reporter there certainly was, jeff. The white house officially says that omarosa fact, fired. It was chief of staff john kelly who informed her that january 20th, the anniversary of the inauguration of donald trump as president , would be her last day. Apparently, according to reporting from my colleague major garrett, omarosa did not like those term, tried to appeal and have that decision changed, even went so far as to appeal to ivanka trump, the president s daughter to, ask to keep her job. She didnt get the answer she wanted. She then tried going into the white house residence, at which point she tripped the alarm. Now, presumably she was going to try to speak to the president. What we know, though, is that in tripping the alarms, it did anger chief of staff john kelly, who had her escorted out of the premises. Now, the secret Service Denies any role in having escorted her out of the building or out of the white house grounds. They simply say that they deactivate her pass, allowing her entry here, the former reality starturned office of public liaison official is no longer with the administration. Glor Margaret Brennan at the white house. Margaret, thank you very much. Now a look at some of the other stories were following in tonights evening news feed. Three women have told the New York Times that music mogul Russell Simmons raped them. Simmons denies the accusations. Salma hayek is the latest actress the accuse producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault. They worked together on frida for which hayek earned an oscar nomination. Philadelphiabased architect James Timberlake says the design was inspired by castles. It even has its own moat. Like windsor castle, the new embassy sits on a hill set back from the street by over 100 feet and it will eventually be planted with tall grasses and a waterfall disguised as another defensive wall.
