Axelrod good evening. Im jim axelrod. We begin tonight in lafayette, louisiana, where investigators are learning more about john russell houser, the man who opened fire in a Movie Theater thursday night killing two and wounding nine before killing himself. The portrait of houser thats emerging an angry and mentally disturbed man who had a swastika outside his business and praised hitler on extremist web sites. Reporter a Law Enforcement source familiar with the investigation tells cbs news houser had been staying at a nearby motel for at least a month. They found writings in his room that said he wanted to target Law Enforcement, governor agencies abortion clinics and anyone else will do. He had even written the name of the movie and show time he planned to attack. The source also said when police found housers body in the theater, he smelled of alcohol. Thursday nights shooting shocked the 59yearolds family. The Baton Rouge Advocate intervood the shooters brother. Were trying to get our arms around that and try to find an answer to that, which we cant. He started drifting away from us and being a recluse, you know we didnt know what happened. He just went quiet on us. Reporter but there were signs of trouble in houseirs part. In 1989, he was indicted for hiring someone to burn an Attorneys Office and a judge ordered a psychiatric evaluation. Then in 2008, his family filed a protective order accusing him of domestic violence. The order was later lifted at the familys request. That same year, he was treated for Mental Illness at an alabama facility. He was oocially mad. Reporter in his home town of columbus, georgia newspaper columnist and former radio talk show host Richard Hyatt knew houser as a frequent fiery caller named rusty. Rusty was just resentful that people wouldnt listen, be it the council member, be it the school board. These information just wont listen to me. And that kind of irritated him. Reporter police still dont have a motive for the attack, and longtime residents like Lafayette PoliceCorporal Paul muteon are struggling to figure out why houser choke choez to attack this quiet southern town. Youre from this area, do you take this personally when this happens here . You know, it breaks your heart because its a place that, you know i visited with with my family and ive attended movies at. You know its personal in that, you know, why pick our community to commit such an atrocious act . Reporter at last check three victims were still in the hospital. Jim, one of those victims is a man in his 80s with five gunshot wounds. Axelrod omar villafranca, thank you. Reporter David Begnaud is from lafayette, louisiana, and today he spoke to the lead detective on the case. It was a time where you saw the worst that a human being could do and the best, all in the same room. Reporter Lafayette Police detective David Begnaud was one of the first on scene thursday night. As youre approaching the door, are there moviegoers running out . The entire parking lot was full of people. Reporter begund raced around the side of the building to the exit door for theater 14. How quickly do you see the gunman . Immediately. Reporter and hes deceased . Hes deceased. You could tell he suffered a gunshot wound to the head. The gun was lying directly in front of him. Reporter once you realize the gunman is is dead, what do you see in the theater . I see extraordinary things. I see courage and heroism. I see terror. I see our officers tending to the victims. I heard people crying in pain asking for help. One of the injured guys i remember sitting in the back saying dont worry about me. I can walk out. Im fine. Go deal with someone else. Reporter begnaud now the lead detective on the case, believes the gunman, john houser, had a getaway plan. The fact that he exited out of that door where his car was parked right there, that he had staged his keys in such a manner that he wouldnt have to dig them out of his pocket. The key was on top of the tire. On top of the tire, that he could have grabbed them and jumped in the car and taken off. The fact that we found no note saying he intended to commit sued or this was his intent, those things alone lead me to believe that, you know, he had every intention to do the shooting and then leave alive. Reporter detective begnaud is convinced the shooter actually picked this theater and scouted it before the shooting. Jim, investigators will now pore through a months mother of Surveillance Footage to determine if and had he came. Axelrod just as investigators try to understand one mass shooting, the grieving continues for victims of another. People line the streets today in grantsburg, wisconsin to say goodbye to Sergeant Carson holmquist, the marine who was among those killed on july 16 at a Military Reserve center in chattanooga, tennessee. President obama is traveling in africa this Weekend Spending today in his fathers homeland, kenya, where he took on the countrys law that makes homoswult illegal. Chief White House CorrespondentMajor Garrett is with the president in nairobi. Reporter with military fan fair and flourishes, president obama arrived at kenyas white house for a facetoface meeting with president anthony kennedy. The two agreed on new Counter Terrorism measures and measures and keniata welcomed more u. S. Aid to boost Young African entrepreneurs but the two clashed on kenyas refusal to protect the right of gays and lesbians. When a government gets in the habit of treating people differently, those habits can spread. The idea that they are going to be treated differently or abused because of who they love is wrong. But there are some things that we must admit we dont share our curlt our societies dont accept. For kenyans today the issue of gay rights is really a nonissue. Reporter president obama also announced new u. S. Trade rules prohibiting the trafficking of imported ivery from endangered african elephants. Were proposing a new rule that bans the sale of virtually all ivory across our state lines. Reporter as for the president s dinner with three dozen members of his extended kenyan family, mr. Obama said he had to be ready for surprises and he needed mediation. I think the people of kenya will be familiar with the need to manage family politics sometimes. There are cousins and uncles and aunties that show up that you didnt know existed but youre always happy to meet. Reporter at a state dinner held in his honor this evening, the president drew sympathetic laughter when he said he came to kenya to improve relations not to retrieve his birth certificate. Axelrod Major Garrett with the president in kenya, thank you very much. Hillary Clintons Campaign spokesman said today the former secretary of state will testify on october 22 before the House Committee investigating the 2012 attacks in can benghazi, libya that left four americans dead including the ambassador christopher stevens. But later a Committee Spokesman said plans for clinton to testify have not yet been finalized. Im joined now by John Dickerson, the moderator of face the nation. John, if the hearings are held on or around october 22, mrs. Clinton will be in the middle of some heavy campaigning in both iowa and New Hampshire so what kind of effect could it have on her . I think the effect will be determined by how those hearings go forward. On the one hand, you have some people in the clinton camp who believe that the modern congressional hearing is a bit of a circus, ands that, ands that you there are such partisan overtones of this conversation they cant even agree on when the date of the actual questioning is going to take place perhaps secretary clinton will benefit from the circus atmosphere and it will look like shes being ganged up on. Of course, the downside for secretary clinton would be if she gives new ammunition about those who raise questions about her trustworthiness and these fresh evidence her opponents can use against her. Axelrod the more the handling of the 9 emails and benghazi stay in the heads how much of a liability do they become . Its not necessarily a forgone conclusion that all the increased scrutiny will hurt her if her opponents overplay their hands. But certainly, at the very least, when this issue comes up, as it did last fridays tblots out the other message that Hillary Clinton is trying to put forward. On fridays she had a big economic speech that she was going to deliver, but it was crowded out a bit by new revelations about these emails jim. Axelrod John Dickerson in washington, thank you. Tomorrow morning on face the nation, johns guests will include several republican candidates for president senator rand paul of kentucky wells former Texas Governor rick perry. Also louisiana governor georgia also running for president on the shootings in the lafayette Movie Theater. Newly released photos show the white house on 9 11 transitioning from shock into crisis mode. As Contessa Brewer reports, the photos were released to a documentary crew that requested them under the freedom of information act. We see for the first time, Vice President dick cheney in the west wing office watching tv, smoke rising from the world trade center. In a florida classroom president george w. Bush got the news. Back at the white house cheneys staff photographer, david bohrer, snapped away as the Vice President realized the nation was under attack. In 2002, cheney told 60 minutes a secret Service Agent had rushed in. He said, sir, we have to leave immediately. Because of the president s absence, the Vice President was in charge. He led the White House Team including condaleeza rice. These are the photos a pbs frontline producer has been trying to get for more than a decade but says her requests were repeatedly denied. After 14 years we finally see the toll of that arduous day. You also see lynne cheney and First Lady Laura Bush in the bunker for their own safety. We watched the buildings fall and, you know, it was just an unbelievable sight. Reporter photos show the president , back at the white house that evening, meeting his inner circle. The c. I. A. Director george tenet watched as the president addressed the nation. Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil. Axelrod Buckingham Palace, the official rank of britains royal family, was opened for tours today while the queen is at her summer home in scotland. But as Elizabeth Palmer discovered on a tour of her own buckingham has seen better days. Reporter Buckingham Palace is more than just a tourist attraction and a backdrop for royal photoops. Its the central venue for the ceremony at the heart of britains monarchy. Anna reynolds is a curator of the Royal Collection trust. Over 62,000 people are invited to Buckingham Palace each year by the queen or other members of the royal family for eventses ranging from a state banquet for heads of state to a garden party or investature. Reporter this is the largest room in Buckingham Palace. This is where the queen hosts all her fanciest dinner parties. And once the tables laid and everythings set 170 guests can sit down all at once. President obama was the guest of honor at such a banquet back in 2011. But behind all the gilt and glory, the old palace badly needs repairs. Its not the first time. During world war ii, a german bomb demolished a whole wing. Since then, of course, its had minor touchups, but whats being proposed now is a major 250 million renovation, good for the building, not so good for its elderly occupants. Queen elizabeth and Prince Philip may have to move out of their palace for a whole year. Fortunately, theyve got another one nearby Windsor Castle just 25 miles up the road. Axelrod fewer than 20,000 men have played major league baseball, and only about 1 of them have been enshrined in the hall of fame. Tomorrow four more will be inducted. Craig biggio, and pitchers john smoltz, Pedro Martinez, and Randy Johnson. It never creeped in my mind for a moment that i was going to be in the hall of fame. I dont know who thinks that kind of who has those kind of thoughts. Axelrod Randy Johnson was the dominant pitcher of his time 303 wins, five cy youngs, the most strikeouts ever by a lefty but photography is his passion now. Hes taken pictures of soldiers in afghanistan gorillas in rwanda and rock stars on tour. Is there anything about photography that overlaps with pitching for you . Sure. Youve got tunnel vision. I mean, as a pitcher were getting the sign and being extremely focused on our target. As a photographer, on the other side of the lens, whatever im shooting, it could be, you know, something charging after us, or it could be, you know, a friend thats a professional musician im on the road with so everything is still the same sense, tunnel vision and being focused. Axelrod at 511 and just 170 pounds, plenty of scouts thought Pedro Martinez too small. But three cy young awards and more than 3100 strikeouts later martinez credit the doubters for the boost they provided. A little chip on my shoulder. I was out there. They did not realize what i had in here. I used that as the fuel to actually ignite what i wanted to do. Reporter craig biggio is the only player in Major League History with at least 3,000 hits 600 doubles 400 stolen bases, and 250 home runs, but unlike his classmates, he never won a world series. Does sunday allow you to feel much more accepting of the fact that it wasnt meant to be because after all youre a hall of famer . Theres a lot of great players in the hall of fame that never got to the world series. Just because i dont have a ring i dont think anything lesof it. Axelrod john smoltz is the only pitcher with 200 wins, 150 saves, wheeze he thinking about now . Golf. And playing the senior tour. Yeah, its a passion of mine. I thought when i was done pitching i would have a gap of time to get ready and get ready for the senior tour. Its an impossible tour to make, but so was seven years old trying to make it to the big leagues and pitching in a game seven. Axelrod i know theres no crying in baseball.
