You can see on 9 futurecast exactly what were talking about with a cold front on the approach and that steamy air mass in place, the perfect combination to get showers and thunderstorms firing up, and it looks like the evening commute could be wet. Here we are 9 futurecast at 3 00. So already starting to see the rain push troop the immediate met push through the immediate metro area during the noon hours. Starts to sink to the south as we head into the evening but i wont rule out some of the showers and storms will still be lingering at that point. It does look like the worst of it. Most of our model data showing it right in time for the drive home. Could be a little wet for the nats game. Low 80s for the first pitch at 7 00. A lingering storm early but then we will see some clearing late in the game. So maybe a rain delay but not a rain out for this game against the reds. Coming up well talk about your weekend forecast. The computer glitch that grounded all United Airlines flights has been fixed this noon. But now passengers are waiting in line at boarding gates. Our surae chinn is live at Dulles Airport with details on the airlines second major computer problem in as many months. Surae . Reporter andrea, the ground stop lasted a short period of time but its causing big issues and lots of people and some passengers will be impacted throughout the day. You nighted airlines not able to fly their planes. They were stuck on the tarmac for about an hour starting around 8 45 this morning. It caused a Ripple Effect with people not able to catch their connecting flights with regional airlines. United called it a Network Connectivity issue and passengers are calling it a major headache. Passengers were unable to check in, print out their boarding passing and board their flights. Dulles quickly recovered from most of the computer problems and they were up and running in about half an hour. But dont be surprised to find residual problems just like these passengers we talked to are experiencing. Ive been trying since about 6 00 this morning to get my boarding pass, and the united application just tings. Reporter does it normally do that . No, i was in boston yesterday and it popped right up. When we check in at the kiosk, it was [indiscernible] they gave us the opportunity to rebook on a later flight which we did. So now i think we leave d. C. At 5 10. Reporter the ground stop lasted about an hour for the second largest carrier in the united states. United is offering folks to rebook, to get a waiver, to rebook their flights and theyre directing people to do so online. At Dulles Airport, surae chinn, wusa9. An Early Morning fire destroyed a familys home in colesville. It happened around 3 45 on white drive. Thats not far from New Hampshire avenue. For most of the morning the people who lived there couldnt be found. But thankfully they were located safe and sound out of town. Nikki burdine was there all morning. She joins us with the latest. Reporter tense moments this morning as firefighters worked quickly to get the flames out and search for the people who live here. None of the neighbors are aware of the status of the occupants. Reporter unaware but hopeful they werent home, including neighbor david dellhan who spotted the fire on white drive, called 911 and tried to get help. Grabbed a sledgehammer and an ax. I broke down the door. Reporter but the heat was so intense, he couldnt go inside. Fire chief arrived and he said to me, if anyone is inside, theyre dead. Reporter while neighbors watched outside frantically trying to get in touch with the family of four who live there. I was just hoping nobody was hurt. When i saw the huge fire, i was hoping it wasnt going to be anything serious. Reporter flames shooting out of the roof causing it to collapse. Very tough, difficult fire to fight, especially knowing the initial stages of the operation, yes. Reporter about three hours later the homeowners were located. They were safe and out of town. Great. Great news. This is a tight neighborhood. And everybody cares for one another. Reporter they will no doubt need their support when they come home to this. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. In colesville, nikki burdine, wusa9. The juice is back on again this noon for some of the 1,000 residents of University Towers in wheaton. Pepco restored the flow of power to the highrise around 2 00 a. M. An electrical fire led to the outage on tuesday. The building also lost power sunday due to another electrical fire. Unfortunately not everyone insides the building has electricity so the red cross is keeping open a shelter at Blair High School for residents who need a place to stay. A man has died after being shot in the head and chest. It happened on 45th street near ponds street in northeast d. C. Around 12 35 this morning. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have been unable to identify a possible motive or suspect in the shooting. Three people are dead and a fourth lucky to be alive after a shooting late last night near the university of maryland baltimore campus. Police say two men pulled to the side of the two vans pulled to the side of the group. One person got out and began shooting into the other group. This is the second shooting in this location in just five days. University of Maryland Baltimore Police urged people to use caution in the area. The gun used in the slaying after woman on a San Francisco pier belongs to a federal agent. Juan Francisco Lopez sanchez is charged with faithally shooting Kathryn Steinle as she walked on the pier with her father. According to the San Francisco chronicle the gun was stolen last week in a car burglary and was the federal agents personal weapon. The baltimore fraternal of Police Issued a report into the baltimore riots with the number one complaint being leveled at the Police Departments leadership. Gene ryan said Police Officers felt a lack of support from the department. The officers characterized the Baltimore Police departments leadership during the riots as unprepared, a little bit politically motivated and uncaring. And confusing. The violence in baltimore was sparked after the april 21 death of freddie gray in police custody. Six Baltimore Police officers have been charged with his death. Authorities are set to announce the names of the victims of the deadly mid air collision in the skies over south carolina. An f16 fighter jet slammed into a cessna tuesday killing the pilot and passenger in the small plane. The Fighter Pilot ejected safely. He is Aaron Johnson and is considered an experienced pilot with over 1500 hours of flying. It was a final tribute from fellow Police Officers to a brazilian colleague killed in the world police and fire games in fairfax county. Police units from around the region provided the funeral escort to Dulles Airport for investigator carlo silvas final flight home to brazil. At the airport an honored guard greeted the silva family. Our Media Partners at the Washington Post report a federal judge in Northern Virginia has ordered the cancellation of the n. F. L. Teams federal trademark registration. It could get awfully active within the next few hours as a cold front approaches. We have all this heat and humidity in place. That typically leads to very heavy downpours so it could be very, very tough to make that evening commute. But if we luck out and if 9 futurecast is correct, by the way, then the storms will arrive a little bit earlier and push through a little bit earlier. So lets get right to it. Ill show you what its going to look like on the day planner and michael son weather cam. We do have the threat for thunderstorms starting in the midafternoon and extending through the evening hours, though i do think that the storms will become a lot fewer and further between as we head past the 6 00 p. M. Hour. 85 degrees at 3 00. 83 at 6 00. And were down to 0 degrees by 80 degrees by 9 00 p. M. So that is good news of course for anyone heading to the nats game. Right now cloudy and 86 degrees but look at the feels like temperature. 95 because of the dew point of 75 degrees. That is beyond oppressive as far as humidity is concerned. We have really, really soupy air in place. Its 84 in leesburg. 79 in hagerstown. When you factor in the humidity, it feels like its well into the 90s. You can see the cold front already starting to make its way through on satellite and radar, but theres plenty more energy waiting in the wings and well see that on 9 futurecast. So the first initial showers have moved in. Those are going to start to press to the south. As they do, they will make way for a few little peeks of sunshine. That of course produces the instability for those showers and thunderstorms to fire up and possibly put down some really heavy rainfall in a short amount of time. So there is that potential that well see some light ponding on the roadways and also lightning is very likely as we head into the afternoon and evening. As we go into thursday, though, well start to see some clearing but another cold front is on the way. This one is actually going to bring us a drop in humidity but before it arrives, its a hot day. Its another humid one so that cold front will sneak on through as we head into thursday evening. Most of the day on thursday is dry but the less humid air will briefly move in on friday. It will feel a little more refreshing than what we have out there right now. Your forecast highs for today 88 in downtown washington. 83 in culpeper. 85 in winchester and 82 degrees in westminster. Overnight tonight, it will stay stagnant. Were going to see low temperatures right around 70 degrees for most of the metro area. You can see were between 69 and 71 for just about everybody. So today is a yellow alert day. That threat for storms during the evening commute. Lingering into the evening hours and then on thursday we start dry but then well have to bring in that threat for a thunderstorm late in the day. I think that most of us stay dry until about 5 00 on thursday. But then friday a stray storm is possible. Most of us will be dry on friday and it is because of that less humid air moving in. Look at all these temperatures in the 90s. We have a prolonged and pretty strong heat wave in the forecast. Were going to see temperatures in the mid90s from sunday all the way until at least tuesday of next week. Stay with were continuing to follow breaking news out of new york.
