The problem you ask what is is going on the flu is mutating so as you mentioned you get it once and come down with a different strain. You mentioned those thousand new cases in delaware. 3,000 new cases in the most recent week in new jersey and in pennsylvania, 26 people died in the course of a single week. The latest numbers coming out cdc for the third week in january found that 10 of all deaths in the country were flu or pneumonia related. Its not exactly the place this seventh grader teacher wanted end up after day with her students. Theyre needing and coughing and sharing germs. This time a 21yearold woman died while trying to cross philadelphias roosevelt boulevard and now her family and her friends and lawmakers are looking to find a way to make the boulevard once and for all safer. Lawmakers and members of the Bicycle Coalition held a vigil monday into her memory while the driver stayed at the scene of the night of the Accident Police say he was driving without a license. Happening right now, big worries in delaware town folks cannot drink the water. It is so bad in fact the National Guard is now involved. On thursday, Health Officials found toxic chemicals in the public drinking wells. This water crisis is in a town called blades thats in Sussex County about 30 miles from the beach. Our Chris Oconnell has more. Reporter for about 1400 residents of this small Sussex County town of blades, delaware, this warehouse filled with Drinking Water may be their only source of Drinking Water for the foreseeable future. After they found out from the town the municipal water supply is at the same timed with potentially dangerous compounds. Car by car delaware National Guards men packed cases of bottled water into the trunks of blades residents who were told this weekend their water wasnt safe to drink. Im just glad they told us. Really. I mean, im concerned about how long weve actually been drinking it. Reporter brittany was shocked to hear that all three of blades municipal water wells were contaminated with elevated levels of pro fluorinated compounds or pfcs according to the state, longterm exposure to pfcs could cancer and is harmful to infants. It certainly has residents rattled. At first i was nervous because i mean ive heard contamination its bad for like depending what it is its bad for like the body and all of that. So i was scared at first. I dont know what it is and id be interested to know what the concentrations are and how harmful they are. The cause of the contamination believed to be from a former industrial plant less than quarter mile from town. But now its a matter of living every day live out of a bottle. Invested our time and our money. Reporter the hope the more people that feel for even a moment what homeless trying to get back on their feet deal with, the more understanding well be. Reporter the radnor township university of 2200 students says its posted a Security Guard on the third floor of its east Residence Hall 24 7. Theyre on the alert for a fire bug. Its relatively Safe Community but im very uncomfortable right now. Its understandable. Because since mid december, there have been three fires set in the trash of the bathrooms of the section of the third floor nope as 3s. It just keeps happening non one really is saying like much about whats happening. So we kind of want to make it stop basically because its been happening more than once. Reporter there were two on the overnight of december 14th say police. Cabrini says it first posted the Security Guard back then until the holiday break but in the Early Morning of february 6th, tuesday another trash fire. The Security Guard was put back. Were trying to come up with a reason why this is occurring. Its a huge safety issue which were concerned about. Reporter parent of this cabrini student tells fox 29 the university failed to notify township authorities to those december fires. Morgan cherry now commutes her mother doesnt want her sleeping in east hall. The school failed to alert Law Enforcement . Yes. Back in december . Yes. We had to call. Whats your reaction to that. I think thats like really unsafe. Reporter spokesperson for abina tells fox 29 the local fire marshal reached out to the university while it was investigating the december fires. Police say they were alerted to last weeks trash fire by the school and cabrini says it notified parents and students by email. Police have brought in county investigators to assist in what they call a serious crime. Its a significant crime. Its a significant risk. It rises to the fell knee level. Reporter this is the same dorm same floor where racist words were scrolled scrawled on a door last fall but no one is link the incidents at this time. In radnor township, im jeff cole, fox 29 news. We know the Opioid Epidemic is a national crisis. So many families facing horrors they never imagined but day by day he we hear stories of try um. And glimmers of hope from those who have faced the worst iain page has more. Iain. So many of these stories end in tragedy. That was almost the case for local woman who nearly died from an overdose. But thanks to her mom, who saved her, shes now thriving and inspiring others. Monica is a beautiful young woman who so much going for her. Loving parents, a younger brother, two sisters. Monica grew up in nice house in south jersey but when she was 15 she had ovarian cysts and the doctor prescribed percocet and vicodin. Soon monica was addicted to opioids. Three years later, she started using heroin. Its cheaper compared to 30 a pill. Its ten dollars bag. Its the same thing. Reporter monica graduated from high school in 2008 and went on to Beauty School but her addiction was getting worse. And initially her family had no idea but eventually her mom found out. My daughter melissa came to me and this was a couple months before everything happened and said, i have a feeling that monica is using heroin. She gave me a little baggy and i thought, oh, god, i felt my stomach just drop. Reporter charlene is her mother. And after researching heroin on and aftehe internet, she confrod monica. We found this baggy. I said, please, you know, tell me whats going on. Are you using heroin . And she freaked out on me. She was screaming and yelling. Said i cant believe that you would even ask me that. Deep in your soul youre thinking, i want to believe her so badly. Yeah. Its easier. Reporter worried about monica she thought treatment was the best option. Monica beat her to it. Mom, i have to talk to you. Im going away to florida im leaving tomorrow on plane. And im going away to rehab. My first instinct was i dont want her to go. My Second Thought is, would you rather pick up the phone and call her alive in florida or have to go and visit her headstone . Monica was in treatment for six weeks in palm beach, florida, and things were going well. I filled my team with meet, therapy. Just doing everything i was supposed to do. Reporter in october of 2015, monica came home to new jersey and hooked um with her exboyfriend. Two days later, she was supposed to meet her mom at a drug forum at a local high school but she never showed up. She called me and said, listen, mom, im not going to make it home by midnight it will just be a couple minutes later. Ill be there. Ill be okay. The next morning charlene knocked on her door but there was no answer. She was out doing errands when she got call from her daughter. You need to come home as fast as you can. She said because i dont know if hes in her room with her. I hear noises coming out of her room. Reporter charlene raced home and tried to get into monicas room. I was pounding on the door because the door was still locked. I went outside and i climbed the ladder and was trying to look in her room. I saw her on her bed and she was gray and purple. The noise that my daughter was hearing was her trying to breathe. God. Reporter i aboved in her bedroom door and i had my son run down and get the narcan and i just learned cpr and narcan win two weeks prior. If i hadnt, she wouldnt be here. Right. Because her her stopped like twice while i was doing cpr. Wow. Im happy that she taught herself how to do narcan if it wasnt for her my sister would be dead. Reporter medic raced monica to the hospital. The prognosis wasnt good. They didnt think she had 24 hours to live. Because she had a heart attack and a stroke and multiple organ failure and brain swelling and they said that she had everything in her system. There was fentanyl as well as heroin, they said you need to talk to your husband and make arrangements because most likely she will not survive. I refused. I woke up to my mom saying, squeeze my hand if you can hear me. Okay. Just relax. Dee breath. Monica was in the hospital for six weeks. She had to learn how to walk again because there was nerve damage to her leg. So much so they almost had to amputate. Oh, my god. Monica was determined to make it. I was in a diaper. Gnaw wheelchair. And still kept going even though i didnt want to. So like its possible. I think that was one of the hardest things. It was even harder than seeing her go away to rehab. When youre watching your daughter in her 20s wearing a diaper. She cant walk, she cant she was having a hard time feeding herself. Monica has come a long way from almost dying to thriving. Now she speaks to kids and shares her story about addiction trying to remove the shame and stigma of the disease. Gives me something to look forward to. Makes me happy. We have to start doing outside meetings in the summer. When you even hear one story and you know that youve changed one life, and as many times as she does this, i just get prouder every time. Grateful she made it and grateful shes making the choices she is now. Reporter great story.
