Camden metro police chief Scott Thompson spoke with us moments ago. He says that the officer is doing okay. But he will be monitored throughout the night. So as we take look at video from the scene earlier this evening, here is what we know. This happened just after 10 00 oclock tonight in the south section of the city near eighth and chelten. Officers approached three suspicious males. Thats how the police chief worded it. One started to run. The officer engaged in some sort of a struggle witness suspect after they say he pull out gun. That suspect were told shot the officer. Fellow officers managed to arrest the suspect right there at the scene. The suspect was taken into custody without incident. He was not injured. Um, and were currently conducting further investigation as to who he was with and what he was doing and why he had a gun and why he shot our officer. Reporter and so the police chief wanting to give very Little Information about the officer tonight as the investigation continues. We do know that this officer that was shot tonight has just one year on the force. Did he not fire his weapon were told during the struggle. As for the suspect, again, he is in custody. He was not shot. Were told that he is a resident of camden and that police did recover the weapon they say was used in this shooting. So er section is back open tonight but just behind us there was police tape blocking it. Theres a police car in the driveway right now. Were told that is the police car that transported the officer here to cooper hospital tonight. But again that officer is in stable condition. Thats the very latest from cam. Back to you. As we go to video, an active investigation focusing in on this area behind the allamerican gardens apartments. Its where Police Officers are searching with metal detectors looking for shell casings. Possibly even a weapon although its unclear at this point. Were spoke with city councilman here in camden for an update. I know its ongoing investigation. I dont have much details. I know an officer was shot. I dont know what happened. As far as i know, hes doing well, and my heart and prayer goss out to the officer just to make sure that he has a speedy recovery. As our Chris Oconnell reports, federal investigators say his own officers wore a wire. The defendant harbored an intense racial animus towards africanamerican. Reporter those stunning words charging former Bordentown Township Police chief frank nucera, jr. With hate crime. They say he was secretly recorded by his own officers making a slew of racist statements against africanamericans. According to the criminal complaint, nucera was record on recordings saying quote these n words are like isis. They have no value. They should line them all up and mow them down. The complaint also says during a september 2016 arrest at this local hotel, nucera slammed the head of a handcuffed 18yearold africanamerican suspect into a door jam. Shortly after, he was recorded saying, quote im fing tired of them, man. I will tell was, its going get to the point where i should shoot one of these blanks. No one answered when we knock on the front door of nuceras home but neighbors were certainly talking. When you read these allegations and you see that his fellow officers recorded this stuff, and youre going, is this the world we live in now .
