A neighborhood remembers a life lost way too soon. Wondering when will the violence stop . Now fox 29 news at 10 00. Emotional evening in East Germantown. Unable still reeling from a quadruple shooting. Thanks for joining us. Im iain page. Im lucy noland. Family, friends and neighbors came together to call for an end to the violence just 48 hours after a 16yearold died in a shooting. Fox 29s Chris Oconnell joins us live from Philadelphia Police headquarters. Chris . Reporter well, lucy, first of all, Philadelphia Police are still trying to find the person who gunned down that 16yearold East Germantown boy in a quadruple shooting that happened on tuesday night. At the same time deep sadness in that neighborhood as family and friends say the world lost a future leader. This innocent boy, this family aint got no more graduations. Reporter the sound of anger booms through the 100 block of east pastor ya street two nights ago it was the sound of gunfire. We lost a young, good broth brother. A good warrior a good soldier. That chaos spilled overeat tuesday night when a quadruple shooting claimed the life of 16yearold jyk u. S. T u. S. And left three other teenagers wounded including his 13yearold cousin. She got shot in the left arm. Were believing the same bullet that came past her arm the one that went into his back. Reporter among those mourning his death, friends, classmates at mathematics civics and Science Charter School and a startling number of mothers. Who lost sons to gun violence. Wake up and understand that the whole no snitching mentality has got to go. Got to go. Its got to go. Reporter his family says jy was a good student of the loved basketball and god. Some day he wanted to be a doctor. Instead his family is planning his funeral. We could be doctors, lawyers, anything we want to be. Who want to be thugs living the live locked up forever . Yall aint got to shoot each other down. Reporter well police are still looking for a shooter and a motive. They also say they do not believe jy was the intended target of that shooting. Iain . All right, chris, thank you. People in woodbury gathering paying their respects to a murdered woman. 26yearold Shawnee Carter was house sitting saturday night when someone beat her to death. Police say theres no threat to the community but neighbors are still scared and tonight community and religious leader s addressed the crowd. We come here on tonight driven by a tragedy first and for most we pray for the family. Small south jersey town came together lighting candles, praying and bringing flowers to show support. There are no arrests or any leads in this murder. Police in Hamilton Township need your help finding a teen. Tally and friends have not seen 18yearold Nicholas Pratico since last wednesday at Mercer County community college. Authorities say he might have go ton new york city. If you have any information, give police a call. A womans recovering from attack in wilmington supermarket parking lot just as she got into her car, a man attacked her with a 95 tried to get away with her car ended up chasing her and hurting guy who tried to stop him. Fox 29s jeff cole reports. Reporter patrons of the shop rite along south walnut in wilmington say they enjoy shopping here and feel safe doing it. So news of the attack came as surprise. Its horrible. I think its awful. Got to protect ourselves. Reporter any reason not to come, would it keep from you coming back . At night it would. Reporter it was just after 6 00 wednesday night when a 32yearold woman leaving the Grocery Store says a man wielding a knife pulled open her door, stabbed her and tried to take her vehicle. Need something, you know, people they just take from people instead of getting their own, you know. Thats what bothers me, but i never had any problems here. Reporter injured on the elbow, thigh and ankle, the victim ran from the car to the shop rite with her attacker in pursuit. She got away. But a 67yearold man who came to her aid tells police he, too, was threatened by the 37yearold attacker and chased. Just have to stay alert. I guess being a male, i dont feel as vulnerable but that doesnt mean im not. Reporter shop rite management had no comment. Most we spoke to on this warm fall day seemed taken a back by news of the violence. Surprised by there was a knife here and some im still surprised by that, you know. I wouldnt think it would be Something Like that in this area. Ill be more careful when i do come here and i will tell my family also to be more careful, but that wont hinder me from coming here. Reporter police entered the store and looked at the video and found the alleged attacker not far from the store. His knife thrown into the gutter. The victim taken to the local hospital and treated. In wilmington, delaware, im jeff cole fox 29 news. All for some frozen shrimp. Police in camden are looking for this guy after they say he tried stealing from the price right Grocery Store on mt. Ephraim avenue. Police say Late Afternoon monday this guy grabbed several packs of frozen shrimp when he tried to leave the store he dropped the food then got into a fight with some of the employees. He then ran off. Armed and dangerous thats how police are describing a trio wanted for a shooting in robbery in kingsessing. The victim is now in the hospital paralyzed from the shooting and investigators think that same group may be behind another crime around the same time. Fox 29s Dave Schratwieser reports. Reporter betty askew has lived in kingsessing for almost 50 years, when gunfire rang out on her block wednesday night she knew something very bad had just happened. I heard a pop, and i thought it was the kids with firecrackers. Then i heard another pop. Reporter what askew heard was shots being fired by three gunmen as they tried to rob a 30yearold man while he walked to his girlfriends home near 54th and warrington. As they attacked the man he tried to run off and was gunned down right in the middle of the street. They fire a shot. Hits him in the back, hits his spine, temporarily paralyzed at this point. Not sure if thats going to be a longterm condition. Reporter random robbery and shooting here came just five minutes before a similar Armed Robbery by three suspects at that 31yearold victim was walking home to his wife when he was approached by the suspects and pistol whipped. They take his backpack. They take his phone. They take his wallet. At some. 1 of the young gentlemen said just shoot him. Thats why i stay in the house specialsly at nighttime. Reporter these armed robberies have her worried. Extra patrols have been added to the area and police are pulling together intelligence information while searching for video to track down the suspec suspects. Its sad. Its really sad. Its really sad that youre not safe walking. I dont care what time of night it is eyre still not safe report roar the vat shooting victim on the 54th and warrington was lying on the ground wounded when the three suspects went through his pockets and robbed him. The problem delivering the goods to the people who are in desperate need of them. President trump is trying to get more help to the island and Administration Officials say they are succeeding. But people on the island say much more needs to happen, not only do they not have enough food, fuel and water, but power is still out across a wide swath of the island. Most atms are running empty. Lines at the bank are long and credit and debit transactions are pretty much nonexist ten. Communication to the outside world is on most of the island is almost impossible. So yesterday chris oh com traveled from philadelphia to puerto rico where so many are so deeply affected. Its before dawn and katies mother and aunt are already at the airport checking the headlines. They live in one of the worst hit areas of the puerto rico and came to philly for a vacation during Hurricane Maria. We have batteries. Reporter today instead of souvenirs theyre going back home with bags of relief supplies. Main challenge that they have right now is trying to find food and gas. Reporter its 6 30 in the morning on the tarmac at Philadelphia International that is an air bus a330. What youre seeing now is part of 19,000 pounds of supplies, generators, water and food all bound for san juan. Also, on the flight, many others trying to get home. Like these guys who came here from puerto rico six months ago to work for a south jersey landscaper. I havent heard from them for six or seven days. Most of their Family Members lost their homes. My brother lost his house and my friends lost their house, too. Reporter you dont even know what youre going back to . Nope. It aint going to be nice. Reporter also on the flight, hector, from maryland. Going to check on his 90 years old dad. Outside of the house is pretty much destroyed. So im going down there to help him clean up. Reporter on the ground in san juan, the number of relief workers are finally growing including the philly salvation army. When i was getting out of the gate, they were saying thank you for coming. And thank you for the work that you guys do. Thats awesome. Reporter getting to san juan for these folks is the easy part with limited flights stifling heat and long lines at the airport, getting off the island is still a challenge. More than a week now after the storm. Chris oconnell fox 29 news. Local leaders are calling for the government to step up relief efforts in puerto rico. Philadelphia city officials along with people from the citys Puerto Rico Community gathered at city hall tonight and theyre urging President Trump and congress to extend federal relief efforts. Meanwhile, this evening the president cleared the way for more supplies to head to the island. He issued a tenday waiver of federal restrictions on foreign ships delivering cargo. New jersey senator bob men and in dez is heading to puerto rico to survey the damage. Democrat is expected to arrive tomorrow morning. He says we need a quote on the ground assessment to see how congress can jump start Recovery Efforts there. Senators corruption trial just wrapped up for the week. Developing right now, health and Human Services secretary tom price says he will reimburse the government for pricey charter flights he took recently but hes not paying the full cost. Not boy a long shot. Price is repaying close to 52,000 to cover. Cost of a seat on charter planes while on government business. However, those flights reporte reportedly cost taxpayers more than 400,000. What he did has President Trump hinting that the secretarys job might be in jeopardy. Battling back from week in the hospital one of four people shot on june 14th as house members practiced for the congressional baseball game. In a speech today, recognizing the Capital Police officers david bailey and crystal greiner who saved his life. [ applause ] let me tell you if they didnt act so quickly and even after being shot both themselves continued to engage the shooter and ultimately got him down which not only saved my life, but saved the life of a lot of other people that are here in this chamber today. He poignantly gave a personal thank to you ohio congressman brad, who rushed to his side after the shooting. Who would have thought that god would have put brad out there on that field with me because the tourniquet he applied many will tell you saved my life so that i can actually make it to the hospital in time with all the blood loft. Reporter as his his was being foreclosed upon and his property sold, joe wanted to join torry and help others. He said, go downstairs and look at all of the food i have. If you think you can get it out of there, you can have it. I thought they made mistake i thought they meant me to be a made of honor and i said you mean made of honor and she said no, no we want you to be our queen of flowers. Its exhilarating. It makes me feel wonderful. As the queen of knauers she but a pink flor dress and hat and hand the out silk rose buds to the ten december. Coming down and everybody is going, its aunt tina. Reporter tina loved the wedding of course but most of all this 91yearold widow she lost her beloved buddy eight years ago, loved the idea of being asked, asked to be part of someone special day. Im just thrilled. I thought whoever heard of that and i thought it was funny. I just keep telling everybody, that it should be in the guiness book as the oldest flower girl in history. Reporter well, i got to tell you i used my magic machine tonight to do a little research. Turns out there have been older flower girls than tina but certainly none with her youthful looks. House Speaker Paul Ryan is pushing for tax reform. Today he did it in pennsylvania. Ryan alongside congressman hee man toward penn Machine Works family owned and operated pipe Fitting Company in aston. After their tour, ryan talked to employees about the president s tax reform plan. What we want to do is get these tax rates down so our american jobs especially manufacturing can compete in this Global Economy and that means they can compete, they can get more jobs, they can get more accounts and they can raise wages. He believes tax reform will help bring more jobs to the united states. Philadelphia has a lot of abandoned properties and in many of them theres a problem. The issue squatters but what do you do when someone swats in a home that you own that youre renovate organize planning to rent out its a big problem and one that city hall is trying to figure out. Heres hank. Ive seen already way too many, um, situations where squatters have moved in to owned properties. Properties either up for sale or properties that were being renovated and in some cases Properties Actually that were occupied. Its just too much. Reporter its hank. Im at city hall where council al taw ten berger at least trying to get the conversation started to address this illegal new generation squatting thats going on in the city. My take is i hope he succeeds because theres lot wrong with whats going on. Criminal trespass first of all and squatters often forge lease documents something the councilman says police arent tipping equipped to decipher. He says council has got to give them the tools. We can and we must. Because were here to protect the public. If the public is having difficulty with their property in maintaining ownership thereof, possession of it is the right thing, we have to do something about it to make it easier for Law Enforcement to up hold the law. Reporter he says first step hold hearings and then when theres consensus make some law and that includes help from harrisburg if necessary. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court revised a lawsuit how the state funds schools in 2014 William Penn School district along with five other districts across the state parents and other organizations filed suit. Now they claim harrisburg fails to adequately fund public education, and provide students with enough resources. Today the Supreme Court ordered the Commonwealth Court to hold a trial on whether state officials are violating the states constitution. Right now, Philadelphia School is basking in the national spotlight. The Us Department of education has recognized the general george amount Mccall Elementary School as National Blue ribbon school, and so the blue ribbon and yellow ones, too. Its one of about 350 schools across the nation to get the award which honors excellence in public and private school. Congratulations. Trapped in flood. A woman calls 911. It shows four inmates brutally attacking a prison guard and Jackson County jail in my sore reach prisoners apparently slipped out of their cells during daily medical check and hid when the guard was making his rounds the inmates were waiting. He had a concussion, broken finger and other injuries. The inmates are now facing new felony charges. Dramatic video tonight out of oklahoma where First Responders came to the rescue of a driver trapped in flood waters. Oklahoma city firefighters jumped into a raft to save the woman stuck in her suv. Those two pulled her out of that suv while the other firefighters back on dry land used a rope to pull them all back to safety. Big storms poured down heavy rain across the state yesterday. So a battle between a campus cop an snake has people laughi laughing. I sure wish we could hear this better. The university of Central Florida officer caught on camera trying to catch a snake in an Office Campus office on cap pus he tried using a trash can to coral when the snake moved what we understand is that all kinds of screaming happened. The officer does eventually get the snake out the door and then proudly raised his hands.
