Hurricane maria is moving off the northern coast of the Dominican Republic and forecasters expect the storm to approach the turks and case company and bahamas overnight. Damage catastrophic in puerto rico. One day after maria ravaged the islands, towns are flood, homes are shredded and two people are dead. Millions of people could end up in the dark for weeks possibly even months. It is just heart to see down there the devastation over the past few weeks down there. Also in houston as well. Check in with meteorologist kathy orr now. Yeah. Checking those tropics. It is. A lot of folks have been asking, chris, what is going on . So i called former director of the National Hurricane center who was my chief meteorologist in houston, dr. Neal frank and asked him that very question. He said though this is just tragic its not unusual if you consider the 60 year temperature cycle of the ocean. Absolutely. And we are very cyclical if you look at the ocean water temperatures weve been talking about this probably for the past ten years or so. About how warm the ocean has been getting, and that storms are going to be able to survive further north just like sandy. The big one will come one of these days and hopefully its in the distant future. He said 1995 is when this particular cycle started. Absolutely. If you take look at the graphics, plotted jose and then i added those is he surface temperatures you can see underneath theres some colors. Some oranges and yellows. Those are temperatures ocean water temperatures in the 70s. But as we look at maria, its a far different story. Heres san juan. Heres the storm north of hispaniola and i added on the sea surface temperatures. You see this dark red that the ocean water is taking on that hu elf it goes all the way up to the carolinas these are ocean water temperatures in the upper 70s, lower 80s. So with that warmer ocean, youre going to have a category three or a two make it up as far north as philadelphia because the ocean water temperatures are still so warm. So we have to keep a careful eye on that, and careful eye obviously on the track of this storm. Right now, maria is a serious cat three. It will be off the coast of North Carolina by monday. Later in the broadcast, guys, well talk about what comes next after that fiveday forecast and how it still could affect us into next week. Umhmm. Keep an eye point. Thanks kathy. You bet. Take look at those nasty burns. It happened at a kids sleepov sleepover. New trend that could send your kid to the hospital. That story in two minutes. Our veterans have given us the rights and freedoms that we have and we enjoy today. Ready. Aim. Fire. And its important for us to let them know that we will never forget their service. Fire. It was steves idea to have this cemetery. This was supplied to the veterans, giving us a final resting place. We owe everything to steve for what he gave us here. I wanted to make sure that we just didnt say thank you to veterans, we had tangible things to show, and i think weve accomplished that. [ taps playing ] so you going let him do . [ laughter ] how is that i dont even its an idiotic idiotic new trend involving hot water like scolding water. With users posting videos of them trying it on youtube. His parents heard him screaming and now theyve got a big warning for other parents. Fox 29s dave kinchen has the story. We heard some screams and crying and my husband come running down to see what had happened. The terrifying wake up call nicole got this past weekend from her 12yearold son. She says he had just been burned by scolding hot water. Within minutes you could see his skin just falling right off, it just was bubbling and kind of hanging. Reporter nicole says her son was having a sleepover with several other boys in this room at their buckingham township home when two of the boys used this hot water dense spencer to fill up a cup and dump on her son at he slept. She says, they did it twice. They finally two boys that did it confessed to doing it. And then they proceeded to tell me about this hot water challenge. Reporter disturbing trend with kids across america as captured in videos on youtube. People pouring searing water on to unsuspecting victims. Nicoles son had to be rushed to Doylestown Hospital she says with Second Degree burns. My mind was just blown at that point. I just was upset, i was, you know, kind of crying at that point. Parents were called. Kids were picked up. Obviously, the one boys father was very apologetic. Um, you know, probably still trying to, upping, wrap it around his head as well that all of this had happened. Reporter her son has been out of school for the whole week due to the pain and will go back monday. Meantime nicole wants other parents to look out for this dangerous game. Please be sure that, you know, that they watch what their kids are watching on the internet. This is this is crazy with all these challenges. This is dangerous. Thank god he didnt turn around it. She was the second one that racial comment to say to meme thats the one told me i never cut come back to Delaware City. Plenty of people have doubted her racism charge. I wasnt there. Dr. Andre says if its true, its terrible especially considering the current Political Climate but hes clear in this case its meetly beside the point. There are other better ways of handling that. Dr. Andre adds maze miller will be the one to suffer from her video she has complained of ugly calls and being afraid to stepped her daughter to school. It is a bed she made herself and shell have to sleep in it for awhile. Dr. Andre adds and this is my take, too, that people are not usually who they seem in their worst recorded moments. Havent you ever lost your temper . Internet can be cruel. People deserve second chances. Im hank and thats my take. Well, coming up, who doesnt love holding an adorable newborn baby . The local place that has volunteers doing it every single day. And our kathy orr tracking your forecast with lots of colors behind you, kathy. Oh, yeah. Here it is. Maria, major hurricane crossing the turks and caicos tomorrow and then heading toward the mainland u. S. But how close. Well take closer look at that coming up. Philadelphia mayor jim kenney outlining how the city of philadelphia is helping puerto rico in the wake of all the devastation caused by hurricane maria. And well do whatever we can and whenever were asked to by the officials in puerto rico well be happy to accommodate. The mayor is asking philadelphians to donate and volunteer to help the people of puerto rico in any way they can. So the big question, a lot of people asking this one, where does maria head next . Weve got some changes. Kathy orrs forecast just 15 seconds away. In weather tonight, we are talking about conditions that are changing, even with maria as it continues to track toward the north and west. Outside, a beautiful night across the delaware valley. Its the last night of summer and it feels like it 75 degrees in philadelphia. The wind is calm. Relative humidity at 66 . Still mild out there, 75 in philadelphia. 77 in wilmington. 71 in millville. 62 in the poconos. 72 in allentown. As we take look at jose, not a lot of oomph with this but still with ocean water temperatures still in the 70s and the 60 this far north were looking at it still sticking together as Tropical Storm. Tropical storm jose maximum winds at 50 miles an hour. Its losing its tropical characteristics. This is the 11 00 oclock update just popped in. So were calling it post Tropical Storm jose. Losing the warm water and getting into some of that colder water moving west at 2 miles an hour. Most of the forecast models really have jose circulating around little bit and then pretty much falling apart. So that will not be a weather factor. That is the good news much as we take a look at the track of maria though we see the center of circulation moving toward the north and the west off the coast of the main land u. S. By the beginning of next week when well be seeing closer to the main land. Now as we look at the sustained winds staying offshore of the bahamas thats the good news. And moving into the open waters of the caribbean and the atlantic. Hurricane marie is still very strong major category three storm moving northwest at 8 miles an hour. Now this is 125 Miles Per Hour winds and it will continue on this track going toward the northwest take a northerly turn in warm ocean waters and after this, the spaghetti plots do show most of the models keeping the storm offshore but still a possibility of it moving inland near the mid atlantic. So keep a careful eye on that. Overnight low temperatures will be on the mild side in the 60s. 55 in the poconos. During the day tomorrow, 85 in madd philadelphia. 85 in millville. 82 in pottstown. Trenton 83. Down the shore around 80. Your seven day forecast looks g saturday and sunday in the 80s. Monday 88. Tuesday 84. Chris if you see any showers from the tropical systems out there it would be probably wednesday or even thursday but still a lot to watch over the coming weekend. Certainly doesnt look like fall in that forecast, kathy. All right. Thanks. Youll want to watch this story, because you know few things rival the bliss of holding a newborn baby.
