Weekend. Thats going to be all people talk about this morning. Good day everyone. Its sunday, august 27th, 2017. What the people in texas are dealing with, life look out of houston. Looks like some flooding there on their highway. Its been more than 24 hours since Hurricane Harvey made landfall in the Lone Star State. Even though its been downgrade to do Tropical Storm, the heavy rains are expected to fall for several days now as people try to keep damage minimum. We have Team Coverage this morning. Sabina kuriakose track our people in the area helping out those in texas lets begin with meteorologist monica cryan who continues to track the Tropical Storm. Hi, monica. Hi. When we talk about when were saying a downgrade to Tropical Storm, it doesnt mean this storm is going to have less of an impact it means the winds died down bringing it to Tropical Storm category. Those winds at 45 miles an hour. But what that really does mean, though, is that the flooding is still going to be a threat no matter what. This is Tropical Storm, a remnant or even if its a hurricane its still going to be bringing a lot of rain. And so were keeping track of it here in the forecast whats going to happen this is going to head further south, this is the official forecast from the National Hurricane center. Through monday into the afternoon its going to start to track little further south its going to become a remnant low pressure meaning its not going to be as strong when it comes to those winds its still going to pack a punch when it comes to the rain starts to take that more northerly turn heading back towards east texas and you can see thats through monday, tuesday and even into wednesday, thursday. So well be talking about this rain all the way into wednesday and thursday. Some areas were thinking just north of Corpus Christi still the same area that was hit yesterday from that rain and the day before from Corpus Christi to houston expecting ten to maybe even 20inches of additional rainfall. Back here again another dry day. Another gorgeous sunny start. Temperatures at about 62 degrees dew points into the mid 50s lets track the next few hours were expecting temperatures to get into the 70s around 11 00 oclock, 75 degrees. Plenty of sunshine. 78. Well talk about your highs in the upper 70s continuing as we head into the new work week coming up in just a bit. Lauren. One of those people drowned to death trying to drive in houston flood waters. Cell phone video and a pierce to show a tornado forming in cyprus and aerials showing destruction from another tornado. Harvey likely to become a tropical depression by later tonight but officials are warning people not to become too relaxed just what monica told us. The storm expected to loom over the region for several days with some areas projected to get up to 50inches of rain. Please do not come back into these affected areas until youve got an all clear from your county, your city eocs. Thats very important. Theres so much dangeros things going on out there. We want to make sure everyone stays safe. The slowmoving storm made landfall late friday but forecasters say its going to last for four to five days now. Home and businesses along the coast between Corpus Christi and houston felt the worse of the storm. Damaged ranged from downed trees to collapsed buildings. Emergency crews are beginning rescue efforts as the storm calms down and flood waters rise including men and women from our area. Is a bean in life with more on their efforts. Tears the crews that are running to the dangers, first responderring from our own city and region including philadelphia firefighters fresh off their last shift. Thats right witness task force that left hours ago this morning. Our crews were there as the team pack up their gear into several trucks getting ready for the journey down to texas where again we know harvey again has turned deadly. The task force had just four hours to organize, pack and hit the road. 12 vehicles are headed to the naval base in fort worth. It will take them 22 hours to get there. So theyll arrive around midnight tonight. In all our area is sending about 45 people, about half of them are philly firefighters. The rest come as far as harrisburg. Selfsustainable for at least a week. I mean everything were taking gators, a lot of water equipment, obviously because of all the rain thats there. They take mres showers anyplace anything that you can think of theyre going to have on these trucks. Water, food, anything at all. We even have 2k9s going. Doctors going. We have rescue specialists, tech special it wills. Like i said, theyre going to be self sufficient for up to a week on their own. 88 of these members tonight were actually working and we pulled them out of the firehouse and then we backfilled their positions and they were sent here. They have go bags at all times. So they bake hal enough timing to home, talk to their wives. And this morning they are on the road. Incredible sacrifice called to duty as part of femas second largest type of deployment and Officials Say more crews could be on their way as they continue to monitor the situation down in texas. Now once the team gets there, theyll be searching for trapped people and attempting to rescue them coming up in this hour well have more on just how that task force plans to reach some of those people and lauren it is remarkable. And really speaks to their training. Back to you. Absolutely. Sabina, thank you so much. While you were sleeping overnight fire in West Philadelphia sparked a major investigation. Right now the flames are out but police tell us they do have man in custody and they believe he is responsible for setting the fire. The fire started in a multi family home in the 800 block of north 64th street just after 3 00 oclock this morning. Were told the mans girlfriend recorded him setting the fire. Luckily no one was hurt but fire crews tell us two people have been displaced. Now to a developing story and teacher in the Philadelphia School district in trouble with the law this morning. It all stemmed from an incident during a protest at the controversial frank rizzo stat statue. Police say the teacher got into a fight with the police and then threatened them. Reporter this is philly Public Schoolteacher john sheerin joining the activists at the rally calling for dismantling of the 2000pound statue of former mayor and Police Commissioner frank rizzo. Racist bleep lying bleep cop. Reporter sheerin standing at the barricades lined by uniform police continued his complaints about some white polce officers. The rizzo statue has recently been a target of protests with calls for its removal and a mural of rizzo was defaced in south philly. Some activists say rizzo oppressed the black community while others say he was a champion for the common man. All of this comes on the heels of the violent demonstrations and clashes between White Nationalists and count protesters in charlottesville over plans to take down a statue of robert e. Lee. We want that racist bleep statue down. Reporter last night, sheerin was arrested for his part in the mid august rally. And people on social media called him out because hes a schoolteacher in the city. Reaction this evening, mixed. They think that is the case, that Public School teachers are they would little bit higher standard when theyre outside but at the same time they should be in some ways because theyre immediate role models for children. You can see this is Tropical Storm harvey still got that well defined rotation in the Northeast Quadrant of this storm system is where weve got the heaviest rain right now pounding houston which is where we had some of the heaviest rain yesterday and even some tornado warnings. No tornado warnings at this point but we still have flash flood warnings that extends all the way into louisiana luce back into houston and down into parts just north of Corpus Christi and san antonio area and closer to the coastline still has Tropical Storm warning in effect. Winds have died down but theyre still a threat of 39 Miles Per Hour winds or higher. And then we also have that flooding threat thats always going to be the biggest threat and biggest concern over the next few days. 20inches of rain and were talking additional rainfall from what theyve already seen. A surge much lower than what we had yesterday. Yesterday remember there was possibilities of surges up to 1. Their still is a few isolated tornadoes possible through the day and again that look like it will be near the houston area. Your sea surface temperatures back here not much of an impact from the hurricane and the Tropical Storm. Temperatures still in the mid to low 70s. That risk for the rip currents its low to moderate all along the coastline. Atlantic city to cape may and even those delaware beaches have a moderate risk for rip currents just be careful if you are swimming out there today. Otherwise, were looking at temperatures about 62 degrees in sea isle and then the boardwalk in Atlantic City at about 65 degrees at well. So temperatures today were going to be out in the upper 70s thats how we stay into monday. By tuesday were getting some rain chances so we keep it dry until then. Small drones like the one well show you here expected to play an increasing role. Camp shelby in mississippi will serve as testing ground to evaluate different types of drones. Operators at that military post are using a simulated village to search for people and vehicles posing as targets. Officials expect the technology to dramatically improve operations. Border security is a big part of what the drones are going to play the role they plasm search and rescue also another big area where they play a role and also disaster recovery. The idea of government drones raises privacy concerns for some americans. Officials say the dhs is working closely with lawyers on privacy and civil liberty issues. And we have a warning this morning from delaware state officials about web sites offering help with missing financial assets. Officials say consumers have been told theyre unclaimed property can be returned to them by paying a fee. Delaware Authorities Say not true. Charlottesville police announced charges against three more people in connection to the august 12th White Nationalist rally in virginia. One man has been charged with firing a gun near a school. The second who is a teenager was charged with Malicious Wounding and the third man faces Second Degree murder charges for driving a car into county protesters and killing heather heyer. They also say they now have identified 35 victims after a car plowed into that crowd. Police at the university of maryland say theyve identified a person of interest noose hanging at the if i capita cow fraternity. Since then police interviewed more than 60 people and again have now identified that person. That person expected to be disciplined. Its unclear at this point whether think state or federal charges will be filed. Okay. Before you head out the house this morning, keep this in mind. Runners competing in the philly 10k are flooding the streets of south philadelphia right now. The philly 10k started at 88th and south streets and it will end at fifth and pine. Due to the number of people involve in the race officials are saying there will be streets closed off in that area until about 4 00 p. M. You might want to avoid south philly if at all possible today. Monica. I see that sunshining right on the tops of those runners. Yeah. They got great forecast not only because of sunshine but because of the cooler than average temperatures. So that run should be somewhat comfortable fort runners. Here we are not comfortable in texas. Theyve been for quite some time under the dilution of Tropical Storm harvey. Weve got winds at 45 Miles Per Hour. This is the key point to all of this though. Look at that movement. 1 mile per hour. This is really not moving almost stationary and thats why this is such a big flooding concern. As this starts to head little bit further south once again just little bit north of Corpus Christi possibly becoming a remnant low later today, and then its going take sharp turn towards the north head back over houston and its still going to be bringing rain because even though its just a low its still going to have lost moisture associated with it, and so its going to be raining all the way into wednesday and thursday. When it comes to additional rain paul, areas that already seen some of the heaviest of rain like the houston area ten to 20inches of additional rainfall possible. Man thats a nice look here along the jersey shore. Much different story. Weve got lots of sunshine to enjoy for today. Our temperatures into the low 60s well be warping up into the upper 70s. Hurricane harvey unloaded extraordinary amounts of rain on texas and all that water has to go somewhere. Like weve been telling you its still the beginning but weve seen significant damage. Authorities say its way too early to tell just how bad it is because crews cant reach some of those hardest hit places as you can imagine its all hands on deck type of surgery. Emergency crews from our area are on their way there to help. Sabina kuriakose live in the newsroom with details on what exactly theyll be doing. Hi, sabina. Good morning, lauren. Theyll be trying to reach those hard to reach places. Now these are firefighte firefi, doctors, technicians all part of a task force that had four hours to go home, pack and start that day long trek down to texas. Theyll only be stopping for fuel on the way down. Now as soon as they arrive, theyll be searching for trapped people and we were there this morning as the team of about 451st responders spent the night loading up a dozen trucks and vehicles with search and rescue gear most of the crews come from the philadelphia fire department. A few of them are firefighters who were pulled straight off duty tonight and told that they were going to be heading to fort worth in the next couple of hours. Theres a naval base down there of course. They left around 2 00 this morning. Already, lauren, theyve been on the road for more than five hours now. Theyll have water, food, search dogs and boats among all of theirs equipment. The team is expected to be selfsufficient for up to one week on their own. That means food, water, everything that they need is already packed up in those trucks because, of course, they dont know what theyll find once they get to the ground. Commanders say each crew member is highly specialized to safe lives. Mainly well be doing search and rescue. That is their their primary cause when they get down there. Any collapsed buildings, um, like i said were sending a lot of water assets. Theyll be out pulling people off the roofs of their houses, things like that. But theyre very apt on getting into heavy concreted buildings that have collapsed or are under water and theyll go in there and search. They basic hal enough timing to home, talk to their wives. They come in, they go through a medical evaluation here. They fill out paper work so that we can they can email and we can email their families so we can keep in touch with them, and theyre going to be on the road. Were probably not going to see them for about two week. Reporter talking about sending in the cal garr reach these Task Force Members are the first to mobilize. Officials say as soon as we continue to see the damage on the ground from harvey, more crews could be sent down. Now, that team is expected to get to texas around midnight tonight and their work begins as soon as they get on the ground there. Lauren. Theyll hit the ground running. Sabina, thanks so much. Devastation in texas could hit your bank account pretty hard if you think oh, im unaffected. Not so fast. Even before Hurricane Harvey hit, key oil and gas facilities were forced to shut down temporarily and that means you will see gas prices rise. The evacuations started late friday so when will they reopen it depend on the seventy three rest flooding when power is restored to that area. Experts say gas prices could increase anywhere from five to 25 cents per gallon. The new probe into recent crashes involving the navy raising a lot of red flags this morning. Some of the reports the government is looking at show naval forces may be stretched way too thin. Ten sailors died when uss john mccain crashed into an oil tanker earlier this week. We did a lot of work out in the park with lot of greenery and i wanted to do architectural art backgrounds also so we came around to the Jewish History Museum where their ceremony and reception were and put them in front of the statue and it kind of all came together with the side of the building. So i wanted that reflection and the clouds reflecting in there. My absolute favorite picture this one this groom looks adorable. I did not guide them at all during this. Still bringing very heavy rainfall to parts of the Southeast Texas coast. Notice its not as well defined that eye but we still have a lot of circulation. Its pulling in that moisture from the gulf. Unfortunately, at this point houston feeling the brunt of this. Theyve got a lot of flooding and houston theyre saying the conditions there are really really quickly deteriorating and cruise are having a hard time getting some of those rescues over a thousand rescues so far. Flash flooding problems all the way from louisiana especially through houston and just south of san antonio east of san antonio Tropical Storm warning in effect when the problem with those winds at about 39 Miles Per Hour through today. Flooding obviously still the main concern with possible rain. Additional rainfall up to 20inches. Were not feeling any effects here. Weve got nice and kind of quiet conditions through today. Were looking at Tropical Storm harvey with winds at 45 Miles Per Hour. Unfortunately only moving 1 mile per hour. Thats the problem. This is almost stationary and so its going to bring more and more rain since its very slow t move. It will start to head further south become remnant low later today and into tomorrow. Take a northerly track as we head into our tuesday and wednesday and even into thursday, even though it is just a low, its still going to be bringing a lot of rain and were thinking additional rain amounts could get up to 20 even 30inches of additional rainfall unfortunately in the same locations that already seen the heaviest rainfall from this. Thats why were talking about it being almost stationary, not moving very quickly and kind of training over the same locatio locations. Thats going to be the big issue is that flooding. Monica, the first category four hurricane to make landfall in the us since one slammed into florida back in 2004. Its now claimed two lives. One of those people drowned to death trying to drive in houston flood waters cell phone video shows a tornado forming in cyprus and aerials there in siena plantation showing destruction from another torna tornado. Harvey likely to become a tropical depression by late tonght but officials warning people not to become too relaxed. The storm is expected to loom over that region for about four to five days with some areas projected to get up to 50inches of rain. We want to make sure everyone stays safe. The slowmoving storm made landfall late friday but forecasters say it will be days before we see it go away. We have a Task Force Made of firefighters, doctors and search specialists. They left just hours ago this morning from philadelphia and while the rest of us were just waking up now that convoy of trucks is already been on the road for six hours. Our crews were there as the team packed up their search and rescue gear into a dozen vehicles getting ready for the journey town to texas where again we know harvey did turn deadly and many others were injured. Now the task force had just four hours to organize, pack and hit the road. They are headed to the nave base in fort worth and it will take them about 22 hours to get the there. So theyll arrive around midnight tonight. So in all, our area sending about 45 people about half of them are philly firefighters now the team is trained to rescue trapped people from collapsed and submerged concrete buildings. That means theyre going to go in and search houses that are underwater and theyll do it all with whatever equipment they have time to pack. Selfsustainable for at least a week. I mean, everything. Were taking gators, a lot of water equipment, obviously, because of all the rain thats there. Um, they take mres. Showers. Anyplace anything that you can think of theyre going to have on these trucks. Water, food, um, anything at all. We even have 2k9s going. Doctors going. We have rescue specialists. Tech specialists. Like i said, theyre going to be their own selfsufficient for up to a week on their own. Eight of these members tonight were actually working and we pulled them out of the firehouse and then we backfilled their positions and they were sent here. They have go bags at all times so they basically had enough time to go home to talk to their wives. Incredible sacrifice called to duty as part of femas second largest type of deployment Officials Say more crews could be on their way as they continue to monitor the situation. Now the Task Force Deployment will last two weeks but it could stretch on for even longer. Their work lauren begins as soon as they arrive. While you were sleeping overnight fire in West Philadelphia sparked a major investigation. Right now the flame are out but police tell us they do have a man in custody and they believe hes the one responsible for setting the fire. It started in pull tie family home in the 800 block of normal 64th street. It was just after 3 00 oclock his morning. And why they say this is their guy, well were told the mans girlfriend recorded him setting that fire. Luckily, though, no one was hurt. Fire crews tell us two people have now been displaced. To developing story now. Archdiocese of philadelphia is warning people about a problem with this years kathy lick charities appeal. Archdiocese says it has been made aware some donations made through a bank lock box mishandled misappropriated or not processed at all. Its working with the bank to investigate the problem and make sure all donations are made go good. So they sent this letter out saying it does not believe any donors personal information was compromised but will be looking into that as well. A teacher in philadelphia in trouble with the law this morning it all stems from an incident during protest at the frank rizzo statue. So it could be stressful but i know for me what we try to do, we try to balance in between my wife and i to make sure were at special events and different activities. As father of a young girl, how important is your role in her live for her to see you around and of course that molds and shapes her mind her relationships with men going forward. Sure. I think very important. Like again we spend that quality time daddy daughter my wife is a huge part of her life, and i would say under takes the majority of the difficult stuff, the lunches and getting up in the morning. But again to take that time out to have that daddy daughter time and that family time, i think is important for her to understand what that role is and i think gives an appreciation to our relationship and her relationship with other men as well. Things like this to try to make sure that, you know, we have a role as well and not just, you know, pta meetings and things of that nature. Not one day but for the whole year. I think the importance of schedule link and planning is underrated when you have a lot going on and, um, again we talk about what it means to be a professional at physical right now. Very important that you schedule and plan stuff out. So you can look up and its been five, seven days skins seasons you participated in an activity or watching an event or took part in something that you know the child would rather participate in a lot of times we bring them on the trail with us and look up and we spent the whole day doing bunch adult stuff. Daddy y is the kiddie stuff, where is kiddie time. Schedule link and planning is important. That would be the one piece of advice i would give dads moving forward.
