Right now at ten, the deep freeze is causing major problems in the d. C. Area, from water main breaks and flooded homes to Power Outages and no heat at Howard University. We have Team Coverage. Cold artic air and dangerous wind chills now a wintry mix on the way. Ill let you know what to expect coming up with your forecast. Plus, steve bannon weighs in on the fire and furry controversy, he apologize to pupt . And more changes for metro riders. It could impact how you pay to ride. Fox5 news at ten starts now. We begin tonight with the bitter cold weather. It was yet another frigid day in the d. C. Region. We want to take a live look outside right now on top of the cold weather another concern coming our way is a wintry mix which could make for a very messy monday evening commute. The weather is already prompting some School Delays and closures right now spotsylvania Public Schools will be closed torp. Stafford county Public Schools is on a twohour delay. Of course you can find our complete list as the updates come in on our website fox5dc. Com. We have Team Coverage tonight, gwen tracking your forecast, Lindsay Watts keeping an eye on all of the water main breaks and evan lamb bemplet hes tracking efforts to restore heat to Howard University. Lets start with gwen. Going to have tomorrow is not snow, but it is ice, dangerous ice. Right now were keeping a close eye on radar as we see a wintry mix with some rain moving its way in across the central portion of the country heading our way. By the time we get to the evening commute tomorrow were going to be in full force dealing with this. Right now theres a Winter Weather advisory stretching all the way from illinois to areas along the mid atlantic and it does include us. It kicks from 3 00 until 9 00. However, from our far Western Areas that advisory will begin at 11, 11 30 tomorrow morning. This means were going to have some snow mixed in with some freezing rain and sleet, but mainly its going to be freezing rain and sleet is what youre going to see. The snow part will be mainly over the Higher Elevations but its going to be icy by the time it makes contact with the surface. We have the cold artic air that doesnt seem to want to go anywhere. Were seeing southerly flow kicking in, but the cold air not moving out as quickly as wed like to. As a result of that with the artic air weve had for so long, surfaces are cold and that means its immediately going to freeze and become ice once it makes contact with the surface. Roads , bridges, overpasses, your driveways, all will definitely be impacted. As we see the warmer air trying to come in we have a cold front is that going to head our way and ahead of it were going to see the precipitation start to kick in. Your evening imheut will be i am impacted with this. It doesnt take much to take conditions dangerous. Four wheel drives will have some issues. Not much in terms of accumulation. However we will see it light and patchy every where causing a loft issues. By the time we get to the evening commute tomorrow the precipitation is disevment in heemplet it loo going to be out of here at least by midnight into the late hours tomorrow night, so not impacting much on tuesday but it also means youre going to have to be very careful in your evening commute no matter where youre driving because as we know ice definitely will make things very dangerous. Well let you know when the warmup is coming in just a bit. Thanks, gwen. Its already been a messy night out there with dozens of water main breaks. Roads are shutdown and some homes are flooded. Fox5 Lindsay Watts live in tacoma park where is icy water has closed an area. East west highway is closed between New Hampshire avenue and tenth avenue. You can see there is is road. Crews are hard at work, but the Water Company for this area says this road may remain closed overnight in to rush hour. That Water Company says just today in Montgomery County and Prince Georges County there have been more main breaks. We have been rung around some of them. Our first stop was on route one in college park Near University of maryland. Then we found out about flooded homes elsewhere in Prince Georges County, in Fort Washington, so we raised over there. Take a look at this basement. The homeowner estimates six feet of water. The water main break happened on top of a hill. Water flowed down overwhelmed the sewers, so water ended up surging into homes through toilets at least in some cases. A real mess over there. We talked to the man whose basement flooded. In the basement they have a washer and dryer. I have one room, a music room. We dont save anything. From Fort Washington we were onto weather on in Montgomery County, we heard about another water main break with homes potentially threatened. You can see the roads are just a sheet of ice. This is off of Georgia Avenue fortunately no homes flooded there like in Fort Washington. The Water Company wssc is taking spornlt for personal damage as a result these breaks. Well take care of them. Its unfortunately and frustrating. We have a claims office that will take care of them. Theyll go through the claims process and well fix anything that needs to be fixed. Back here live now, wssc has had a very busy week. That Spokesman Says that the company has been responding to 40 to 60 water main breaks per day. In d. C. Its been busy as well. Earlier this week there were just a few days where d. C. Water had 730 water main breaks and unfortunately the warmup that were going to be seeing may not help because that sudden increase in temperature can also be very problematic for pipes. Were live in tacoma park, Lindsay Watts, fox5 local news. Meanwhile crews at jfks york are dealing with water pipe issues of their home. Our workmen and women are working 24 hours per day and are still here on the weekend ensur ing that we do the maintenance fictions that are ready to get the campus up and running. This has certainly been the most extenuating circumstances that Howard University has faced in quite sometime and were seeing the repercussions of this weather. Weve been saying classes delayed a week. For most students thats because the professional schools are un affected so those cleases for those schools do start tomorrow any students that have not been able to change their travel plan s to delay their return to campus they will be able to be housed in several residence hauls. We take a look inside a local 911 call center. We go one on one with the heros who answer those calls every day, including the call for a devastating in Prince Georges County. County. Weesh back with a fox5 exclusive. Were hearing from the every day local heros who work in the 911 call centers and answer the phone when you have an emergency. Its a story we first brought you when it happened last november. Fox5 was on the scene. We spoke with neighbors who watched help leslie as the fire instance r intensified while two people inside desperately pleaded for help. Tonight youll hear from the real life heros. Its on fire. I see fire. Okay, i have the Fire Department started. I need you to stay on the phone with me. How many people are trapped inside the house. Its lady she cant get out. Richard riley was the first firefighter to arrive on lorraine drive in temple hills while neighbors watched help leslie as a son rushed back into the burning home to save his wheel bound chair mother. But for these two women who took this tragic call last november theres a part of the job thats always a question mark, what happens after the call ends in i wondered if they made it. I knew they made it out of the house. But did they make it out of the hospital. The person calling nine one , it could be the worst day of their life and we have to understand that. We have to treat them with dignity and respect. But the bad thing is we never, ever get closure and thats very, very hard. These nine one call tears and dispatchers say these calls never get easier and unlike the First Responders on the ground th ends and oftentimes they leave work wondering if the victims they helped made it to see another day. Unfortunately in this fire the First Responders did everything they could, but ultimately the son and his mother died at the hospital. Were going to lighten things up talking about sports.
