Feels like 9 degrees here in d. C. It is going to be a long pull with this cold weather. Well talk about what you should get ready for friday and the weekend coming up a little bit later sarah jim. All right, our Team Coverage of this winter storm continues. We have sent our crews out to brave the snow and the winds. Fox5s tisha lewis is monitoring the conditions in Southern Maryland in Saint Marys County. Kristyn leon is along the coach in Rehoboth Beach delaware. We start with tisha lewis in Saint Marys County. Hey, tisha. Reporter hi there, jim, hi, sarah, you know what its beautiful out here but potentially dangerous and you know what, snow fall that weve been focused on all day, you can see behind me the roads are clear and theyve been working here in Saint Marys County specifically leonardtown to get some other areas clear but the concern for tonight is not just the snow fall but also as you all have mentioned the wind and you can see just how windy it is. If you take a look to my right, here in this Shopping Plaza you can see if you take a close look at the flags, you can see just how windy it is. Again, the focus is shifting from snow fall to wind and were told could be range from five above zero a all the way to 10 below zero so just imagine how that feels. Its its well below freezing. What i can tell you is that on the way here tonight, we did drive through la plata on the way here to leonardtown tonight, and this was a familiar scene, flags whipping in the wind and in fact you can see this video was taken at a farm in la plata. It shows gusty winds and also snow swirling across this open field. Now, once we arrived here to leonardtown, the most snow that weve seen so far, which means that plenty of plow trucks were busy working to clear the roadways but it wasnt all work and no play. We spoke with Kimberly Smith and her little ones who ventured out to pick up some items. We got two shreds for my kids. Were going to the hills so they can slide down the slide for today. You know, school is out so they [laughter] as well as moms birthday. Yay reporter happy birthday. Thank you, thank you so much. Reporter is this what you expected, better or worse. For this . Uh, you know what, its weird, its really low in some parts and then with the wind its creating snow banks so its higher in others. Its kind of a mixed. I think theyre more prepared this year. Roads are a lot better than what i would have thought. Reporter and some top sellers that we learned from christian telling us some top sellers at Hardware Stores in the area salt, s sleds and of course snowblowers, no surprise there. As for that wind chill advisory, were told it will remain in effect through tomorrow at noon. Residents are being urged to stay off the roadways and avoid travel, avoid unnecessary travel. My colleague, kristyn leon continues our coverage in Rehoboth Beach kristyn. Reporter tisha, stay warm out there on your end. We just pulled up onto surf avenue in Rehoboth Beach. Its incredible out here you guys. I really want to show you what the ocean looks like at this very moment. Take a look on your screen now. You could see this is a peripheral vision so a side view from where were at in our car. Its incredible. All those waves, i want to catch a big wave before we start moving. I dont know if were going to be able to do that. Anyway, what weve seen here on our end with the waves, see, there you go right there, just huge a huge Ripple Effect with the winds, the wind gusts, the cold. Obviously blankets of snow covering this white sand so just an incredible view and now i want to show you were actual in motion, we are driving on surf avenue not too far away from the main street that strip there and you could see here this is a side street in a remote neighborhood off the coast and i mean, this area has not obviously. Very, very slick roads at this time. So, if you happen to be out and about driving theres our seat belt. You know, our photographer dan is putting on his seat belt right now. Make sure you have your seat belt on as youre drying. Stay safe on those roads. Right now its about 23 degrees outside you guys and we have not braved these elements yet. Im actually very nervous to do so but were going to be monitoring the situation here all evening long throughout the rest of the newscast. But meanwhile i do want to show you before we go outside and tell you what its like there, i want to show you what the crews sauer earlier today. They were about 20 miles south of Rehoboth Beach in ocean city maryland and my goodes in it doesnt even look like a beach out there. Just incredible. I mentioned the blankets of snow, those incredible wind gusts and it was just such a sight to see. Having, i mean growing up in california ive never been on the beach and seen just, you this is definitely incredible. Does not feel like a beach town to say the least. So, just please if youre going to be out here stay warm, stay safe and if youre driving buckle up for safety. For now well send it back to you in studio. Keep dan in line out there. To pay for tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations. Donald trumps tax scheme for the wealthy, adding 1. 5 trillion to the debt and leaving us with the bill. Tell Barbara Comstock we wont stand for selling our wild lands to give billionaires a tax cut. There are two types of people in the world. Those who fear the future. And those who embrace it. The future is for the unafraid. All because of you tonight President Trump is ramping up his attacks on the man who used to be his chief strategist steve bannon. Threatening letters from the president s attorneys and dismissive comment from the president show the feud is not going away. The white house issued an order to staffers today, no more personal cell phones in the white house. Lets go live on the hill tonight. Fox5s Tom Fitzgerald with more on this. Hey, tom. Reporter sarah, good evening. This is a wild one. The clash of titans, trump versus bannon. In some ways this could not have come at a worst time for the white house. Wall street is riding high, the president just came off a big victory on the tax cut deal but nobody is talking about that tonight. They are talking about this explosive book, fire and fury in which steve bannon takes shot at not only the president but his relatives and senior staff. Asked about this at the white house today, the president accepted bannons compliment but then turned tail and once again dismissed his former adviser. Thank you. Thank you very much. I dont know he called me a great man last night so, you think, he you know, he obviously changed his tune pretty quick. Thank you all very much. I dont talk to him, i dont talk to him. Thats just a misnomer. Thank you. Reporter three times he says he doesnt talk to steve bannon but this all surrounds this book. Its by author Michael Wolff in which ban nor reportedly tells wolf in a june 2016 meeting by donald trump with russians was in bannons words trees us in. He says further unkind things about trump relatives and Jared Kushner and ivanka trump. The president described by his own press secretary is furious about this. Now, late last president s own personal attorneys delivered a cease and desist letter to steve bannon asking him to no longer say any more defamatory things about the president. We reached out to noted attorney and well known former maryland states attorney glen ivy tonight. He says in his viewpoint, this letter from the president s personal attorney and not the white House Counsel in ivys words is highly unusual. The reason its a little unusual is normally the private attorney would only be doing work on behalf of the president in a private capacity. So, this i guess would be theyd have to be saying theres some sort of private agreement between the president and bannon where they could enforce the cease and desist but its its pretty unusual to have that. Reporter and if all of this didnt make for enough of a wild day, white house staffers were greeted at work this morning by news from White House Press secretary longer be able to use their personal cell phones in the west wing starting next week. Now, this was described as a measure to clamp down on security within the white house. However as you well know the president has railed against white house leakers which he accused bannon of being one last night. Live on the hill tonight, Tom Fitzgerald fox5 local news. Its been two months since voters cast their ballots in virginias 94th district house race but we didnt have a winner until today. Fox5 political reporter ronica cleary was in richmond for the announcement. Joining us live on the unusual selection process. Reporter it was an incredible moment in history. I was very glad to be there but it happened like that. Far beyond the scope of virginias 94th district, the balance of power in the entire Virginia House of delegates rested on the results of this race. And a tumultuous race it was with a recnt challenges which ultimately awarded each candidate with the exact same number of votes, 11,607. So, whats the solution when there is an exact tie . Well, if you can believe it, a random drawing. For the drawings we printer slips of paper with each candidates name on them. We will then insert them into film canisters and seal the canisters. These are brand new canisters from amazon. Well then place them into a bowl stir them around and pull ou the winner. Reporter the bowl for the historic occasion hand crafted by a virginia artist and on loan from the Virginia Museum of fine art and with the canisters placed inside and mixed within seconds democracy fell into the hands of random chance. The winner of House District 94 is david yancy. Reporter democrat Shelley Simonds sat motionless holding the hands of her husband and daughter as the names were drawn and her opponent declared the victor. James alcorn, chairman of the Virginia State board of elections appeared calm in spite of the significance of todays drawing. I dont feel calm on the inside. Ill tell you that. But i do trust the system so i trust that the General Assembly had these conversations about how to handle ties when there wasnt a case facing them. Reporter and while yancy did not attend, citing inclement weather, simonds would not immediately address whether she plans to take legal action in light of todays results. Yesterday i offered my opponent a deal that would have made this final. He did not take the deal and, therefore, for me all options are still on the table. Do i think its fair . You know, it was a long hard election season and it does seem like a sad end to the story to have to end on a game of chance. Reporter drawing names like this hasnt happened since 1971. Even then it did same significance because house power didnt hang in the balance. Back to you jim and sarah. Thank you ronica. I know that its so tempting to get out there but we dont need ice rescues on top of the cold. Yeah. And the bitter wind chills weve got to deal with. Lets say goodbye to the storm. It is racing away. This is about the last 12 hours and it is up toward boston and yesterday you may remember that i said if this thing continued to drop that central pressure, which it did, it could be equivalent to a category three hurricane. Central pressure now at i believe at last check 950 millibars. Thats the strength of a category three hurricane. Crazy. And by the way Hurricane Hunters were flying into it yesterday. They like to do a lot of studies on those storms that rapidly intensify. Here is our storm moving away but the brutal cold is going to be coming in on the backside of it. Were already starting to feel it and we are describing it as a extreme cold because the combination of the cold and the wind will bring in the coldest air weve had so far this season. And a quick check of some of the snow totals. I added in a few more, have you been wondering as we looked at our crews showing us what happened in ocean city, they collected 11inches of snow. Here in d. C. , only. 8 of an inch. Salisbury you got hammered with 10inches and calaway maryland thats Saint Marys County also getting hit hard with 6. 3. Virginia beach also getting anywhere from about eight to i believe as many as 12inches of snow down there. Theyve really been hammered for sure. Winds are very gusty already. This wont go anywhere and when you combine those winds with these air temperatures overnight, this is what were headed for. 11 in d. C. Three for gaithersburg. Five hagerstown, culpeper and winchester. What a brutal start it will be in the morning. Expect those wind chills to feel like about 10 degrees below zero making friday one of the coldest mornings weve felt around here in quite some time. I think theyll get upwards of a foot in many areas. Weve seen them play in conditions like this, some of the nfl games already this winter. Good sees anyone for them. Look, there are people that say theyre crazy out there. Theres a reason they win all those super bowls. They force them to practice in that. Hes got them running outside in that. Locally east of 95 got the jackpot snows. Less than an inch at Reagan National. Snow was not the big deal and its all about the brutal cold thats going to come in behind it and boy you will no, sir it when you step outside if you havent already done so. Youve still got a little timeo sweep some of your snow away before it gets super hard. Lets talk about weather headlines. It is bitter wind chill in the forecast for the next two days. Not just tonight and tomorrow but through the day on saturday. Winds will be hardpressed to drop below 30 in terms of gusts over the next 36 hours or so, maybe even 48. And that means very cold temperatures. Were dropping to Single Digits overnight. Going to keep Reagan National at about 11 degrees but close enough, right . The weekend stays cold but it also stays dry. I know you dont want to hear this but next week looks warmer but as we transition from the cold air to some warmer air, it could result in some messy mix. What is that . Its a combination of rain, freezing rain and maybe even a little bit of sleet that may be around on monday and well have to get that timing down for that as we get a little bit closer. Short term, weve got widespread wind chill warnings and wind chill advisories. The difference is the wind chill warnings are colder. Were under an advisory and that will begin at 10 oclock tonight and it will go until noon on friday because it to 10 degrees below zero and this might even be a little bit generous to be perfectly honest. Out in the mountains that could be as low as 25 degrees below zero in terms of the wind chill and on some of the highest ridge tops. A check of temperatures, teens, low 20s in the forecast and the wind again keeping the atmosphere mixed up just a little bit but even with the wind well be heading on down into the Single Digits and wind chills are already there. Feels like six in gaithersburg, three for dulles. Winchester youre already feeling below zero at three below. 12 for annapolis, baltimore coming in feeling like 8 degrees and taking you forward with a prediction of where wind chills may be tonight, it could be feeling as cold as 20 degrees below zero in cumberland as expected. 11 degrees below zero for gaithersburg so thats why i was saying maybe the 10degree below may not be a cold enough range. Tomorrow morning our wind chill predicter predicting 20 degrees below zero in many areas. That is very difficult. Youre hearing about some about delayed openings, its because of the cold, not the snow. And the wind will continue to blow and drift a little bit of snow that we had locally onto the roads. Tomorrow evening 6 oclock is not as bad as the morning but it doesnt feel great out there. So if youre going to be planning an evening out make sure you have your layers. Friday at 11 oclock look how cold it still feels from 16 to 18 degrees below zero north and west 7 degrees below zero in d. C. , 10 below in annapolis and gosh we just keep it going even into saturday morning with these brutal wind chills continuing through the day. Run this out to saturday night were still below zero so thats a long pull with those really incredibly cold temperatures and youll want to limit your time outside. Actual air temperature tomorrow maybe only 19 degrees for d. C. 16 hagerstown, 17 for winchester. 21 for annapolis. 23 for quantico. Obviously feeling much colder. And into the weekend we go with single digit low temperatures at night. Bitter cold afternoons. But we will be looking at expecting any we in any weathere head through the weekend. Saturday only 19 tr 19 degrees r the high. Monday that should be saturday, sunday, sorry about that guys, im going change, that sunday afternoon clouds start to build, only 25 degrees. Monday well warm up a little bit but thats when we have to watch for the possibility of a little bit of messy mix. I will fix that but lets talk a little bit more about the monday morning threat. The cold will still be in the process of departing with High Pressure off the coast. So we lock in that cold as we start to see warmer air coming up from the south and west with a little bit of moisture. Thats the recipe for the possibility of a little bit of wintry mix. The icy mix. The stuff that is no fun for anybody and that could produce some sleet in the pink. Thats how we depict ice. That wont be there all day. It should change over to rain on monday with a temperature of 39 degrees but that might be a slow start for us monday morning so heads up for that. This looks nice on the sevenday forecast. 44 degrees for tuesday. There could still be a little lingering mix though if we dont transition over to and sometimes thats hard to do. Wednesday 41 degrees so its looking a little better for next week with temperatures at least getting closer to normal. Thursdays temperature 45 degrees and mostly cloudy but the next few days are going to be a challenge to get through so make sure you plan accordingly and not spend too much time out there. Jim, sarah back to you. Thank you sue. Call the kids in because if theyre wondering what the deal is with School Tomorrow were going to give you the word right here. Lets go. Derek staten died after he was hit by a Metro Transit Police officer. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. But a man living near the crash site says he has complained about that intersection before. Matt ackland is live in brandywine with more tonight on this. Matt. Reporter hi, sarah, yeah, weve been covering this story all week. This is the intersection here behind me and mdot engineer for traffic told me today that plans had been approved to put in Safety Measures like crosswalks and pedestrian signals in october of take six months to 18 months to complete but as you can see, nothing has been done y yet. Marlo maddox moved into this neighborhood next to 301 and chadds ford road this summer. He says he immediately noticed how dangerous this intersection was for pedestrians with no sidewalks, no crosswalks. I would just cringe just looking at someone trying to cross that intersection. Reporter so he wrote to the county and the state. He was told in an email in october that new Safety Measures were coming but a date wasnt given. Then this week maddox wrote to mdot again after hearing about the death of derek statenerek sn had been scheduled yet. Its very hard to characterize it. I mean, frustration, anger disappointment and it would be unfair to all the parties involved to say that this tragedy could have been avoided but its clear that as of right now, as we speak, that no pedestrian aides at that intersection. Reporter today mdot engineering peter capinitas ctold fox5 once the project was approved it was then moved to the Design Department and he wasnt sure why the project hadnt begun yet. Maddox says there is no time to waste and hopes by speaking out publically, the intersection that worries him so much will finally be improved. As long as that continues, pedestrians are going to be at increased risk for injury or worse. Reporter okay, back out live now we did hear from mdot not long ago. They sent us a statement saying that they were saddened to learn about this tragic incident. Traffic engineers review each fatal crash. At this location there are engineering enhancements in the design phase. Well stay on top of this one. Live in Prince Georges County tonight, matt ackland fox5 local news. Todays massive winter storm is causing quite the travel mess especially for airline passengers. A lot of flights especially ones headed to new york were diverted to Dulles International airport because j. F. K. Shut down. But the travel headache didnt end there. Some passengers were held on the tarmac for hours. Fox5s Lauren Demarco has the latest. A lot of passengers just lingering around, lauren. Reporter yeah, its definitely the place to be right now. A lot of folks heading in from all over the world really but what we are seeing is a number of flights that as you said were diverted here because they couldnt make it to new york. One in particular where things got a bit ugly. We were getting phone calls from that people sitting on the plane on the tarmac saying that they had been on there for hours not getting much of an answer from the pilot for the fligh finally they landed about noon. Finally around 4 00 p. M. They got word that they were going to be let off of the plane. And i want to show you a little bit of cell phone video that one of the passengers sent us. Do you see a bus. No. Where is the bus . Right. Shes looking for the bus. We have no bus here. Where is the bus. You just said you have a bus here. We have a bus here because we have no stuff here. Hm. We havent stuff here. Its leap leap 5 oclock. Whats the difference between 5 oclock and now. Reporter frustration certainly running high and that is an air linus set to go to j. F. K. In new york but diverted here. You guys have been dealing with this as well. I know the passengers were calling you from the plane and trying figure out wt going on and your office was in contact with the flight crew. My office in particular, no but our Airport Operations Team here, which is responsible for managing and the day to day operations and flights that come in and out of this airport were in contact with the flight crew as early as they landed like you mentioned we had 19 other diversions come through the airport today. All of which chose to cancel and disembark clearing customs. Reporter but this pilot from argentina did not want to let the passengers off. They wanted to continue on, is that correct. It is up to the airline and the pilot to decide when to cancel the flight and they were hoping to stay on board and refuel and then make it to their final destination j. F. K. At some point this evening when the airport reopened. Reporter so they finally decided to stop that, just after 4 00 p. M. It was more than four hours on the tarmac which according to the faa at that point for an International Flight thats too long on the tarmac, corrt. That faa has prohibits airlines from keeping passengers on the plane on the tarmac. So, i know our Airport Operations Team was in contact with both the pilot and then the station manager in j. F. K. And talking to them about options and working to accommodate them. Ultimately they did decide to cancel the flight and they are in the process of clearing customs now. Reporter thank you so much andrew. Weve been talking with these folks they are still in customs as he said havent made it to the unsecured part of the airport yet but i can tell you just how frustrated they were everybody sitting on the plane you heard that gentleman there trying to talk with the flight crew and still the fact that they are still now in customs, they said theyre just sitting there, they havent been moved through yet. Definitely not a fun travel day for everybody on that flight. It seems most of the people as they arrive here theyre presented with different options. Some are able to take buses up to new york, others are catching other flights depending on where theyre heading but the storm certainly letting us feel a bit of an impact here a thats the latest here.
