Developing overnight the power is back on at the worlds Busiest Airport. But now thousands are backed up after being stranded and delayed in atlanta. All right in the thick of Christmas Travel of course and fox5s Melanie Alnwick is live at Reagan National airport with how these major delays are affecting us locally. Mel. Reporter hey, good morning, and, yes, it is definitely affecting us locally. We had a number of passengers who told us that they came here to the airport yesterday, their flight was canceled they were rebooked on flights for this morning. They got here this morning and those flights were canceled and thats why weve seen such big backups here at the terminal and also at the at the check in counter as people are trying to figure out where are they going, how can they get there and when can they get there, all of this because of that power outage that knocked eve atlanta yesterday and delta has its hub there which means they are predominantly affected by this. The entire airport plunged into darkness sunday afternoon and an electrical fire in the underground tunnels knocked out multiple Power Systems and then you had toxic fumes which kept power crews from accessing the site for hours while on the tarmacs and terminals were stranded. There was a Ripple Effect. Some passengers at Reagan National said theyre having to do a lot of rerouteing to get home. Not going as planned. Sad you wake up with so much joy ready to go and get here and one of the top airlines its just not working out. Its just real sad and heartbreaking. Reporter and they were trying to get to el salvador for christmas and were spending several hours on the phone just trying to figure out how were they going to get there, literally having to fly now out to los angeles and then head down and thats what a lot of people are having to do. Delta of cours affected because thats where its hub is. Even though they have extra planes, extra crews there, it is really having a big impact. Back out live here at Reagan National, we have talked to people who said that theyve been in this line for two hours trying to find out when they can get rebooked, how theyre going to get rebooked and one family that i talked to said they were told they could not get on a flight to atlanta until thursday so theyre heading to the rental car counter. That plane was headed to our area. It happened saturday night. All three people on board were killed as well as a dog. A second dog survived the crash and is receiving care from a veterinarian. According to flight records the plane took off from kansas city heading to frederick maryland. President donald trump is expected to unveil his strategy. The plan is to focus on four main themes protecting the homeland and way of life. Promoting american prosperity, demonstrating peace through strength and advancing american influence in an ever competitive world. The Administration Says the United States must fight on all fronts to protect and defend its sovereignty. The United Nations Security Council will vote on a draft resolution calling for the u. S. Now to the latest on the massive wildfires in Southern California. Nearly 8,000 firefighters have been deployed to fight the thomas fire in ventura as it continues to threaten 18,000 homes. Crews say the return of powerful winds could raise the fire risks. 40 percent contained. Crews say full containment is not expected until january and even then the fire will probably burn through the new year. Jury deliberations could begin as early as today in the Inauguration Day protest trial. Six of the 194 defendants arrested on january 20th are on trial. They face multiple riot related felonies and misdemeanors. Aside from that 195 northbound, close to 23 minutes as you make your way and northbound toward the mixing bowl, 95 on dale city to the beltway and then making your way out, outer loop 25 minute trip, youre all jammed up as you make your way from 95 to the 270 spur. Inner loop bottom side of the beltway were jammed up right there from branch avenue to the wilson bridge. Down to 13 Miles Per Hour average on 210 northbound through livingston road. Putin says he is grateful to the cia for providing the tip that helped thwart a series of bombings in saint petersburg. It is the second call between the two leaders over the past three days. Were told the cia tip led authorities in russia to a group of suspects that was planning to bomb a cathedral and other crowded sites this weekend. The good news is 50 westbound out by the sandy point plaza if youre headed to or from annapolis looks nice right now. In virginia today, contracted Service Workers at Dulles International airport are expected to go on strike. This move comes at the peak of the holiday season. The workers are demanding a fair recognition process that allows workers to exercise their legal right to join a union. The strike is due to begin at 2 oclock this afternoon. 7 18. Its something theyve been doing in new york, chicago and boston. Basically they put the dry ice into the rat burrows and it suffocates them. Its cheaper than using some of the other poisons. Dry ice which is of course frozen Carbon Dioxide is a solid but when it turns to a gas, it does suffocate rats. Now, this method was used in those other cities but halted by the epa for a time last year saying those cities had not got 10 approval for using dry ice to kill rats but now that has been changed and the epa says its okay as long as they use a certain licensed product and according to reports out of boston, theres been a 95 percent reduction in rodent activity in boston. Now, d. C. We did this story on the morning show a few weeks ago d. C. Announcing the use of other methods to try to reduce the rodent population across the city including using solar powered trash bins and smart litter cans, also encouraging people to call 311 to report rodent activity and get Vector Control in to tell do something about it, and of course along this busy corridor with more restaurants, theres more trash unfortunately dog owners sometimes dont pick up after their pets, those are things that attract the rats and there have been a lot of reports to the city recently and the mayor, again today is going to announce this new other effort to try to crack down on the rat population which is something weve lived with and will live with no doubt forever, guys. Over a thousand flights were canceled affecting travel here locally as welch planes headed to atlanta were grounded leaving passengers stranded and frustrated. So far were on Delta Airlines yesterday our flight got delayed because we were supposed to go to atlanta. They rescheduled us out to an earlier flight to stan an tone eighty seven we got to go to minnesota which is probably 5foot of snow. Who knows . Well ride it out and fine out what happens. As we take a look right now in virginia, 66 just to get from 234 to Fairfax County parkway. We do have an 11 minute ride. We have a crash that moved over to the shoulder closer to 28. Lets get you caught up on the news worlds Busiest Airport finally fixed its power issue. But now thousands are backed up because of that major delay. And it comes at the worst possible time, right . Right in the thick of the christmas fox5s Melanie Alnwick is live at Reagan National airport with how these major delays are affecting us locally. Mel . Reporter hey, good morning, and im going call it mop up monday here at Reagan National airport. Atlanta had someone 800 cancellations today. Those flights alone and then today, another 400 on top of that. So definitely a lot of people are out of luck as theyre trying to rebook those flight. Delta taking the brunt of those cancellations and delays because it is the Biggest Airline in and out of Atlanta Airport. You can see here it actually looks bad but this is a lot better than it was a few hours ago because we had some Early Morning travelers who came back here today expecting to get on a flight after being rebooked yesterday only to find out that their morning flight was canceled as well. So really theres a lot of frustration here on the part of passenger whos are justifying to get to where they want to be for the holidays. Lets take you to the video from the entire airport in atlanta was plunged into darkness sunday afternoon. The cause an electrical fire in underground tunnel knocked out mull pell Power Systems though so the main system and the backup system and then toxic fumes kept the Georgia Power crews from accessing the site for hours. So passengers were stranded in the tarmacs and in the terminals atlantas airport the busiest in the world some 2500 nights a d day. So what happens there certainly has Ripple Effect all over the country. Some passengers we talk to this morning here at Reagan National say theyre having to do a lot of shuffling just to try to get back home. Yesterday i was here for the game and i was supposed to leave last night at 8 30 back to atlanta. So i can work today. But outage in atlanta has me, you know, so i had to book a hotel. Keep my rental car an extra day and today im flying to like two other cities before i can get home. Our flight was canceled. We were supposed to go to atlanta this morning, and they rebook us and now that one is cancel again. So we have to reporter and so the frustration definitely a lot for some of those passengers. Delta says that it does have because it is the hub there, it does have many backup splice. Many back up crews to try to handle some of that backlog but travel experts tell us it could be several days before everything gets sort of absorbed into the schedule and i can a test to that here at Reagan National. They waited in a line for more than two hours to try to get some information on how they can get to Atlanta Family of four and finally the dad said they were sold told no flights to atlanta for them until thursday they headed to the rental car counter. Three people dead after a fire tour through a home around 2 30 this morning. Were told a mother a children were killed in the blaze. All of them were on the second floor. Father and two teenagers were able to escape. They are now in critical condition. Two other boys were hurt but theyre expected to survive. Its still unclear at this time what started this horrific fire there in brooklyn, new york. In the meantime the massive thomas fire in Southern California still burning this morning. Two weeks after it first began. Nearly 8,000 firefighters have didnt deployed and continues to threaten 18,000 homes. Crews say the return of powerful winds could raise the fire risk and right now the fire is 40 contained. And one of the things shes going to do is have city officials demonstrate the use of dry ice to kill rats. Basically, its a cheaper method than some of the other poisons that are used, and of course, dry ice is dioxide when it turns from solid to a gas it suffocates rats. Now, it has been used before in chicago, new york and boston although last year the epa halted those cities use of dry ice to kill rats because they hadnt really gotten approval yet and now basically the federal government has green lighted dry ice for use to kill rats. In places like boston they say its been very successful that its led to a 95 reduction in rodent activity in boston. Using dry ice. Im more the organized chaos but well get to that. Lets talk about it. The first kind is the early bird and early bird, you know, kind of the person you want to be. Right. They get up. Theyre bright eyed. Theyre working out in the mornings. Probably watching you on the Early Morning. On the screen. That part is good. They lay out their clothes. These people dough do they lay them out the night where. Yeah, the night before. Night before people. Well talk about kind of two together. They already have their outfit selected they dont have even to put any effort with it. I do that. Okay. These people tend to be perfectionists they approach the day. Theyre very positive. Theyr v these are very successful people and the reason is allison because theyre doing something in the morning or with their morning routine thats for themselves. So personal development whether thats exercise, thats having a good breakfast, sitting down and thinking about your goals for the day. Theyre not already frazzled right after they wake up because theyre running late. So this is great person to be much its hard to this is who way want to be. Exactly much this is combine this with someone called the night bird because this person puts their clothes out the night before, they pack their lunch, theyre very organized. [ laughter ] they have everything ready to go for the next day. Oh boy. That is a tip that we can take from because these people tend to be very less much less tressed than the other people that were going to talk about. Okay. Lower Blood Pressure in this group, less stress. And they tend to have more positive attitude. Umhmm. However, a lot of us, you know, were only this person ten or 15 of the time. Right. And 80 or 90 of the time were this other person. So this is the person that i worry about. This is the organized chaos person. This is this is most of us probably. Right . Right. You have a lot of balls in the air. Tough to do. Youre juggling things. This person is usually think of busy mom a working person that has demanding job. So theyre getting their kids ready. They usually dont have breakfast. If they do they grab something quick. These people are under a lot of stress. However, what this morning routine really signals is that there is some underlying anxiety there. Hmm. Because maybe i am that instead. Maybe. Youre probably a combo of all of them. Okay. Always just scrambling to do everything on their way with the commute theyre finishing up their presentation for the day or theyr practicing something. That also supposedly signals sloppiness to the outside world. You want to be very careful because these people it seem like they have everything put together but theyre really scrambling and if one thing gets out of order, theyre not going to do so well. And perception is reality. I have learned. Exactly what this person is c do lend one thing from the morning person which is a little before. So if for example they already have their kids stuff late laid tout will help reduce routine stress in the morning time. The organized chaos you want to do a little bit the night before. Thats going to bring down your Blood Pressure and also going to make you less stressed, less anxiety. This group it gets better. Yes. It does. It gets better. This last group is the one that i am kind of worried about because they are the absolute last minute bird and the reason that theyre sort of i get nervous about them they do everything last minute. They snooze up until the last minute. Theyre not prepared. Theyre powered completely by coffee. So for them, i have a book called what the most successful people do in the morning. And that book. Look at you. Helps to understand why they can do for themselves and something super cool allison a lot of the times the reason theyre snoozing is because they wake up maybe theyre frazzled at 3 00 a. M. , they wake up and cant get back to sleep. They get into that deep sleep around five or 6 00 and alarm clock goes off. For them, theres an app the sleep cycle app. What thats so cool for, is that it checks on your movement and it actually wakes you up when youre in a lighter sleep. So pretend your alarm supposing to off probably supposed to go at 4 00 oclock, right . Yeah. At like 3 50 if youre maybe in lighter sleep it will wake up right at 4 00 it doesnt let you go into that sleep sleep. Apps and books and everything. Have a cup, honey. To catch our viewers up, i know everyone heard the allegations against kevin spacey but not a lot people really know what went into recasting his role. So this movie called all the money in the world it opens up december 25th. Its still coming out which im shoshocked this is actually happening. But the end of october allegations came out against kevin spacey. Kevin spicy there was allegations of Sexual Assault and sexual allegations as well the whole thing was how do we release a film in december where kevin spacey is playing one of the leading characters in the film the movie tells the story of j paul getty. At this time in the 70s he was the richest man in the world and his grandson was kidnap. This is true story, and he refused to pay the ransom. And it was unbelievable. There was this whole idea of this of him not being able to pate ransom even though he had billions of dollars. So the concept now is how take kevin spacey out of the film and still release it in december and so ridley scott came out in november and said, you know what, well go ahead and replace and reshoot all of Kevin Spaceys scenes with an actor named Christopher Plummer very well known actor in the sound of music. Hes in his 80s as is sir ridley scott. You know what, were going to reshoot spacys scenes and get it done and still make the release date. So november 20 toth november29th of this year, for ten days, they reshot spacys scenes and plummer not only finish the film but nominated for golden globe for the performance non one had seen the movie except for the hfpaw the golden globe nominations came out sir ridley scott was nominated for the movie, Michelle Williams nominated for the film and christopher plu plummer. Im sitting down with plumber and sir ridley wahlberg and Michelle Williams who all did reshoots. Im fascinated to find out wahlberg and Michelle William got back to that emotion place. I read plumber didnt go back and watch spacys performance. He wanted to do it on his own. But now im curious, though, as christopher plumber won you kind of want to see the original cut with spacy so im very fascinated by this whole situation. Disturbing things that spacy has been accused of, the beauty of this story were doing now is that it kind of just shows you that, hey, if youre going to mess up, well replace it you.
