Alabama voters taking center stage this week as they head to about a quarter of a Million People are unable to vote because they owe the state money fines and fees which has led to a new push for Voting Rights. From the states beginnings, straight up til the 1960s, alabama virtually denied African Americans the right to vote. The Civil Rights Movement of the 50s and 60s was marked by brutal violence. The Church Bombing in birmingham alabama where 4 little girls lost their live dexter avenue where thousands king from selma to the State Capitol in montgomery alabam that quarter million who cannot vote are exfelons. Most of them poor, more than half of them are black. Denied the vote because of fines and court fees. Fines that reach beyond their time served. Diane roberts has our story these are the only steel bars tim lanier wants to see now. An ex felon, lanier is building a new life for himself, a life after prison. At age 27, out of the navy, unable to find work, he was ar house and exchanging shots with police during a chase. I was like in the nes neighborhood guys did, trying to survive or thinking this was the only way to survive, ended up catching a burglary charge and attempted murder. He was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole and spent 18 years in prison. Out for 3 years now but still on parole, he works at garrison steele just outside birmingham, making 28,000 a year, taking home about 380 a week. It allows him to live, and pay his monthly 40 parole fee. In order to vote, hell need to be pardoned and pay nearly 4,000 in restitution. As long as im paying fines, as long as im paying restitution, long as im actively doing this then i should be able to vote. But alabama law stands in his way. Laniers burglary offenses fall into a group of felonies called crimes of moral turpitude listed in the alabama constitution, crimes that require full payment of fines and fees before Voting Rights are restored. For decades the decision about which exfelons could vote was left up to individual registrars in alabamas 67. Secretary of state john merr State Capitol in 2015 that concerned him i felt as though we needed a uniform list instead of one that was being used by the registrars from time to time depending on what they thought was appropriate. So merrill formed a task force and in august Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed into law a standardized list of crimes that require payment in full before Voting Rights are restored. There was a trial held, these people were convicted and they were sentenced to a term with certain fees and certain fines that have to be paid, period. Tari williams is the organizing director at greater birmingham ministries, an organization working in the years. Most states allow individuals to reinstate their eligibility to vote once theyve served their time or once theyve served their parole and their probation, they dont also require that all fines, fees, and restitution be paid. So greater birmingham ministries, along with 10 exfelons, including lanier have filed a lawsuit against alabama arguing the requirement for payment is racially discriminatory, unconstitutional, and a modern day poll tax. A lot of those that are incarcerated are in poverty. They go in poor and they come out even poorer and then they have the huge fines sitting on top of them. Secretary of state merrill says its not a poll tax. Its the law. Were trying to mainstream them back into the process and allow them to vote. Whether theyre black or white, green or yellow or red, polka dotted, it doesnt matter to us, were just trying to help folk, pe lanier sees it differently. He says he served his time he paid for his mistakes and sees the fines as doubling do we are a country of second chances. For all them years in prison i had no voice. I had to sit and accept what went down as much as i could. But now i have a voice and i want to exercise my voice. Lanier will seek a pardon and says hell pay restitution as soon as hes able. Still, it could be years before hes able to vote. For matter of fact, im diane roberts. Soledad after the law went into effect, thousands of exfelons whose crimes no longer fell under the moral turpitude banner had their Voting Rights immediately restored. Tens of thousands are waiting on the outcome of the case against the state. When we come back, nfl start Anquan Boldin left pro football. And took up. Most people think it is , anti military, when thats far from the truth. What will it take to solve the issue of race so place will stand for the thoism again . And later. , a woman dares to before. Its not a voyage h space. Well tell you why sd a congressional race. Block . Its all popculture trivia, but it gets pretty intense. Ahh. The new guy. Whoa, he looks he looks exactly like me. No. Separated at birth much . Switch name tags, and no one would know who was who. Jamie, you seriously think you look like him . Uh, im pretty good with comparisons. Like how progressive helps people save money by comparing rates, even if were not the lowest. Even if were not the lowest. Whoa wow. I mean, the outfit helps, but pretty great. Look at us. Remember how the economic crash wow. I mean, the outfit helps, but pretty great. Was supposed to be a wake up call for our government . People all across the country lost their savings, their pensions and their jobs. Im tom steyer and it turned out that the system that had benefited people like me who are well off, was, in fact, stacked against everyone else. Its why i left my Investment Firm and resolved to use my savings for the public good. But here we are nine years later and this president and the Republican Congress are making a bad situation even worse. They wont tell you that their so called tax reform plan is really for the wealthy and big corporations, while hurting the middle class. D that means fewer investments in education, health care and job creation. Its up to all of us to stand up to this president. Not just for impeachable offenses, but also to demand a country where everyone has a real chance to succeed. Join us. Your voice matters. Soledad when the National Anthem plays this weekend at nfl games across the country, well take note of how many players continue the protests begun by Colin Kaepernick. Last week, nearly two dozen players from ten teams took a knee, raised a fist, or knelt protesting for social justice. Philadelphia eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins was not one of though he had protested since week 2 of the 2016 season. Some players say, he stopped his protest because the nfl and the Players Coalition he helped form, agreed to a partnership. He says it was a gesture of good faith that the nfl wa that promise calls for the league to contribute about 90 Million Dollars over seven years to projects on criminal justice reform, Law Enforcement and community relations, and education. Members of the Coalition Say the nfl never asked them to stop their protests. A handful of members have left the organization after voicing concerns the deal was a sell out. Anquan boldin is a former nfl wide receiver, and cofounder of the Players Coalition. So nice to have you with us. Thank you for having me. People have said that 90 mi basically a payoff. Is it . Definitely not. I think that people dont understand is that it is not just the money, it is about the platform that the nfl is lending to the players to make their voices even louder. Players are gaining access to legislators on the hill. Also they are getting the money to Fund Different programs in the communities that we care ab so its definitely not a se. Players didnt start standing or coming out for the anthem until around 2008, 2009. Before that players were in the locker room and there was never a platform for players to protest. The easy solution for the nfl, which is a business first, is to go back to that model. Soledad there are a handful of players who have left the Players Coalition. I know about four or five. Is that an accurate count roughly . Around 4 guys. Soledad and why have they left you think . I think a difference of opinions, which is fine. I think the main thing is that the work continues to get do think everybody has the common goal in mind. For players in the coalition our thought process is to continue to improve our communities. I come from a less fortunate background. Soledad where did you grow up . I grew up in pahokee, flor small town right on lake okeechobee. My family is still dealing with a tragic incident. Having my cousin killed by a Police Officer after breaki down on the side of the road. So these are real concerns for us as players and as citizens, and i am going to do everything i can to make sure i improve. Soledad can you tick off specifically for me things you are working on legislatively . Yes, currently we want to deal with juvenile life without parole. I think we have three states that lead the nation, louisiana, michigan and pennsylvania. We have done listen and learn tours and just to see a child at the age of 13, 14, 15 years old commit a crime and have to pay rest of his life for it without the opportunity to go before a parole board. I have a son who is 13 and to put my son in that situation, i cant even come to grips with that. We would love to do away with cash bail. To have people in prison or in jail just because they cant afford their freedom isnt right. A lot of times these people arent charged with crimes. The longer you sit in jail, the more opportunity there is to lose your job or place of re soledad are you disappointed that Colin Kaepernick is not part of this . For him to have gotten the conversation started, we would love for him to be. I think it would be great if everyone got behind the issue. Because i dont think it is a black players issue, i dont think it is just an nfl issue, i think it is an issue for us as americans and until we deal with it together as americans it will never get solved. Soledad and are you hopeful or pessimistic that that is going to happen . I am always optimistic or i i dont want to sound like dr. King but its definitely a dream of mine to make sure that everyone is seen in the same light. I have a young son right now and majority of his friends are white. I would like to see that across america. Soledad well see if happen with the nfl leading the way in some ways. Anquan boldin, nice to have you thanks for talking with us. No problem.
