Now, franken vehemently denied that allegation but that did not stop him from being on the floor here of the United States senate today to resign but al franken did not go quietly today. Before he left, he made sure he took a verbal shot at the president of the United States, a republican Alabama Senate roy moore who both face allegations themselves. I of all people. No one was hurt. If you take the 355 bridge over the Monocacy River in Frederick County youll have to find another route for about two months. A garbage truck hit the bridge yesterday causing some significant damage. Transportation Officials Say repairs to the bridge will take up to 60 days. Drivers are being detoured from route 80 to northbound 270 from the south and route 85 to southbound 270 from the north. So, plan on a longer commute for the next several weeks. Today in some Northern Virginia lawmakers are calling on the secretary of transportation to immediately force vdot to stop charging yeah, these tolls really have been controversial. They started earlier this week and at some point prices climbed to more than 30 maybe even 40 during peak time at rush hour. Fox5s Anjali Hemphill live along 66 with what happened today. I think a lot of people want to know is anything going to be done right now, anjali . Reporter well, jim, some lawmakers certainly are trying. Were here on i66 right now heading westbound. Again, the peak time of rush hour and we are moving at a good 55 Miles Per Hour. Hardly any traffic on the road here. The bad news is is drivers going the entire 9mile stretch are going to be driving paying, excuse me, more than 13 in tolls to do that 9mile stretch from d. C. To the beltway and as fox5 has been reporting all week long weve seen prices much higher than this at times and this now has up to 16 Northern Virginia lawmakers calling for these tolls to stop immediately, go back to the ol had on i66 during rush hour. Theyve even written a letter to the secretary of transportation to try and step in. Take a listen to what some of these Lawmakers Said earlier today during a press conference. Tolls are like four dollars. We wouldnt be standing here, okay. None of us knew that the tolls were going to be this high. Nobody foresaw this happening. Frankly this was an issue that we had resolved in 2016. We had a very specific deal with the governor that we were going to make improvements and once those improvements were made particularly inside the beltway we were going to go forward with the tolling and the fact this got out of sequence i think, you know what, maybe we should have known better but the bottom line is here we are. Frankly im not sure i would be satisfied with any toll price. One of the points i want to make is people from my district and several of my colleagues behind me we have people already taking the dulles greenway which is paying a very exorbitant sixdollar each way for one exit and on top that of theyre paying the dulles toll road. Throw on the beltway, these are like extra taxes jo just to get back and forth to work. Some of the solutions are very good but we need the commuter lots, we need commuter buses. One of the poorest areas in Northern Virginia in my district in sterling theres no bus service to get to the metro so if we want people to take the metro we need to provide them bus service now not later. Vdot implemented this new toll officially on monday where now single drivers are allowed on 66 during morning and afternoon noon rush hour but for a price. Vdot says the toll prices go up and down based on how many people are using i66 express lanes and that has kept traffic down and moving. Vdot says up to 20 Miles Per Hour faster in the last few days than compared to this same time last year. During peak times of rush hours drivers complained prices skyrocketed. On Tuesday Morning they were as high as 40 to 9mile stretch of 66 from the beltway to rosslyn and that has really angered a lot of drivers in this area. However, weve also heard today that not everyone is against these tolls. We received a statement that i can read to you in part from the coalition for smarter growth who say the new tolls should stay proposals to eliminate tolls and widen the entire highway are simply not viable. The cost would be in the hundreds of millions of dollars and because of the phenomenon of generated travel an expanded highway like this would fill up in record time and traffic would crawl again. While were sympathetic to the sticker shock drivers and politicians are experiencing this week, the combination of tolling, hov, metro and new transit provides the most effective way to move the people in the most expeditiously as possible to and from work in the corridor. This comprehensive approach should stay in place one more thing guys vdot also just put out their new numbers. They say travel times for the drivers along several minutes this week. The average round trip toll price for the first four days was 14. 50. In the morning drivers were paying a little over 10 bucks, in the afternoon almost four dollars which vdot says is lower than the estimated average toll rate of 17 which was originally discussed back in 2015 when these plans were brought forth. Now, it is important to keep in mind, guys, that drivers who didnt go then tire stretch, that 9mile stretch only maybe for an exit or two, were also factored into those numbers into that data that was released today by vdot. So, thats the latest here on i66. Ill send it back to you guys in the studio.
