From nbc news, this is today, with Savannah Guthrie and hoda kotb. Live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Morning, everybody. Welcome to today. On a o have you with us tuesday morning. Willie, good to have you here. Thinking about 50 years ago, how people must have felt when they saw apollo 11 make that launch. We have leenooking up at that beautiful moon, and still 50 years later, it blows your mind we pulled this off. Lets get right to our top story and this newve outrage President Trumps go back attack, aimed at four democratic womennf color i congress. This is coming as his administration makes a move this morning that will make it harder for migrants to request asylum at the southern border. Well have all of this covered. Well start with this new outrage over thees prents tweet. Peter alexander at the white house for us. Good morning. Good morning to you. From birtherism to charlottesville, President Trump has a long history of stoking racial tensions. Againhis time, hes not backing down. The president seeming to relish this latest fight t fo prominent progressive democrats, all of them women of color. It is an effort to exploid tet divideen the moderate and liberal wings of the democratic party, but this morning, those democrats are united in their outrage. The selfstyled squad collectively calling out President Trump. He doesot know how to defend his policies so what he does is attack us personal. It comes after the president escalated his attack on the four freshmen democrats. These are peoplehat in my opinion hate our country. Expressing no regret for his incendiary weekend tweet using a racist trope. Arguing they saculd go b to their own countries, though all but one was born in the u. S. House democrats drafting a resolution condemning the president s words, writing president Donald Trumps racist came nlts have legitimized fear and hatred of new americans and people of color. Th pressed wheer hes concerned people view his comments as racist and white nationalists will embrace his words. It doesnt concern me because a lot of people agre with. The four accusing the racial t of inflaming tension. Were grateful for your solidarity, your encouragement, and your support in the face of the most recent xenophobic, bigoted remarks from the occupant of our white house. I urge house leadership, many of my colleagues, to take action to impeach this lawless president today. The lawmakers arguing the president s remarks were designed to distract from his controveielicies, including the separation of migrant families. Former Vice President joe biden on morning joe denouncing the president s comments. The president s are the face of america, like it or not. Theyre the face of america. And the t ideat donald trump says and does the things he does is just absolutely despicable. Someav republicans h called the president s remarks racist. I think those tweets are racist and xenoobic. Theyre also inaccurate. But most have steered clear word. Ng that a lot of people have been using the word, and my own view is that what wasaid and what was tweeted was destructive, was demeaning. Was disunifying, and frankly, was very wrong. And while from gop leaders theres been silence, the four congresswomen say other republicans have reached out. There were many people who approached me and who said i disagree with some of your policies. Im an independent. Im a republan. But i think what he did was wrong. And he wont apologize, but i am going to apologize. Peter, you mentioned this House Democratic resolution t. Ndemning the presiden what are they hoping to accomplish with that . Yeah, savannah. Good question. The resolution expected to be o vote by the house as early as today. It condemns the president for those comments about the freshmen engresswomen. Question, i think, is will this be bipartisan . How manyepublicans will join democrats. By itself, it doesnt really mean muuhut but with their strg statements, thereignited conversations over impeachment. Still, Democratic Leaders have not expressed any change in view in terms of that. As you said, republican response to the president smm cots has been tempered or absent altogether. Do you expect that to change Going Forward . Some republicans have spoken out, but House Republican leaders who come to the white house this afternoon to meet with the president are on message again their strategy right now is to try to tie the president s inflammatory tweets to this broader fight they view against socialism. Privately, many republicans complain that thede pre cant resist voicing these thoughts, but politica of them success is tied to him. Willie and savannah. Peter alexander, thank you. Now to new developments in th immigration battle in this country. The trump administr has would ed new rules that all but end asylum requests for Central American migrants, and a keyboarder patrol official is speaking out to dispute reports about conditions at u. S. Detention facilities. Gabe gutierrez is in el paso with more on that. Gabe, good morning. Wi, good morning. The number of Migrant Children in this facilities continues to drop. Whether thats due to the trump adstrations policy changes, increased security in mexico, or just a hot summer month is unclear, but now w re hearing from a Border Patrol official at the center of it all, and he makes no apologies. With heated protests in new york and atlanta over immigration raids, new outrage is mounting. Over the Trump Administration making it harder for migrants to seek asylum in the u. S. The new rule means those coming from Central America cant apply for asylum here without doing so first in mexico. We have a president who continues to want to erode the legal system of asylum. The president firing back in a tweet. The Obama Administration built the cages, not the Trump Administration. Votesats must give us the to change bad immigration laws. How overwhelmed was this system over the past few months . Ll, it was definitely overwhelmed. We spoke exclusively with aaron hall, the chief Border Patrol ant in el paso who oversees the station in clint, texas. At one point, the facility held about 700 children. It was only built to hold 100. What happened . Simply a volume issue. We dont want to hold that many people in our shortterm facilities any more t we have to. A scathing report by the New York Times and the El Paso Times alleges the agencys leadership knew for months that some children had no beds to sleep on. No way to clean themselves, and sometimes went hungry. Even at this poin you still dispute the characterization of the care that these children were receiving inside the clint facility. Absolutely. We added showers, we added laundry facilities. Should this not have been added months ago before it got that bad . , keep in mind its the u. S. Governme. We have a entire contracting process. The illegal alien traffic is going to be one step ahead of our ability to respond. We met this group of migrants fr cuba. This woman tolhe us ss desperate. She tried for two months to apy for asylum at a legal port of entry and was told to keep waiting. After watching three people be murdered in mexico, she and her husband decided to cross the border and turn themselves in to officers her in the u. S. As for the new asylum policy changes the chief says he does believe they will re migrntsz h southern border, but critics are expected to challenge the new rules in court. Gabe gutierrez in el paso thanks. The mornings big weather story, the most wave of the season, and its set to expand from the midwest to much of the east coast. Could watch that on a loop all morning. Absolutely. Nhi to t remarkable story of survival. The missing california camper we told you about yesterday, shes been found alive. This morning, the60yearold is sharing dramatic new details on what she says led to her yslong disappearance. Well talk to her live in just a moment. Along with her family. First, nbc National Correspondent Miguel Almaguer it. H the latest on all of good morning. Good morning. Sheryl powell had walked into the woods to go to the bathroom when she says she was sud confronted and chased by a man with a knife who was waiting for her in the trees. She was missing for four days, and her family was just beginning to lose hope, then came the unbelievable news. She was found alive. This morning, sheryl powl is back with her family. Bruised and battered but in good spirits after a harrowing story of survival. It was really just a mter of me wanting to check out a gorgeous new area while my husband was turning the car around. And right away, we ran into trouble. While she was getting ready to camp with her husband in central californias remote White Mountains on friday, she learned couple was not alone. My dad was parking the car around, she went to go pee inds the woover there, and a man came out from behind the trees and he had a knife on him. T firstng thats going to happen here is im goi knife on. And then if you dt let me have my way with you, ill use it on you. Sheryl says she ran into the woods with her small g, moving deeper into the forest because she feared she was being chased. When she finally lost the man with the knife, she also lost oher way back t the camp site. For three cold nights and four hot summer days, sheryl and her dog were alone, on the run, moving only at night and hiding from sight during the day. At night when i chose to hike, i thought, okay, well, the rattlesnakes probably arent out, its chilly. So i took the risk. Ro drinking f a creek and eating fruit from a cactus, she managed to stay alive. Nearby, helicopters scoured the mountains while rescue teams combs the forest. On day fourf the massive search, finally, a break. The family dog was found two and a half miles from the campite where sheryl went missing. Not long after, and not far away, this search team found the 60yearold. That was harrowing. Luckily, im here. Defying the odds, this mother and wife is this morning back with she belongs. I got back the wife. Yeah. Her incredible story of survival being called a miracle in the mountains. Now, as for that man with the p knife, ice say theyre still looking for him. They have a limited description but are using what information they have to scour thearea. Sheryl still doesnt knoy how f by him, but investigators said she did the right thing by running away. Back to you. Miguel, thank you. And Sheryl Powell is with us now along wit her husbandjoe, her children greg and farrah. Good morning to good morning. Well, i know its early there. We so appreciate you waking up with us. How are you doing this morning . Thats the first question, sheryl. Im doing okay. Im just happy to be back with my family. Im happy to be here to tell my story. Yeah. T didnnow if i would make it, but here you are, and it is an incredible story. Can you tell us what happened . Yeah. I was just going to go off for a few minutes with my dog while my husband was turning arod the car to park it in the right position. And we were going to get all set s for our camping, and i wanted to what was around us. I love to hike. I was just trying to check out the wilderness and see what was in front of me. And what options we had, where we head out. And turned into a little bit more than a quick little checkout of the area. Didnt know it would last four days, but im back. So sheryl, there you are, lost in the woods. Cold, as you say, with your dog you. , who is there with glad to see miley doing well also. And you hear helicopters buzzing overhead. This is a scene weave heard before in these moments. What is the agony of hearing the search team and not being able to do athing about it . Yes. So i was about a canyon over. I wasnt in the area they were search first. That was disheartening. I had to realize that perhaps theyll still kee coming around. I didnt know for sure, but i lost sight of the helicopters and i lost thenoise, the sound of the helicopters when i went down to get f water my dog, and there was a green belt down below in the canyon at the bottom, and i thought,re t must be water. And it was some kind of Little Spring or something that was there. She started lapping up the water. I started to drink it myself. It was actually good tasting water, probably the sierra nevadas or just by there. Lu ily, not only good, but i think it was okay. But either way, i made the decision. I had to get water. I had to drink. We want to talk to your family. Sorry to interrupt. We want to talk to your family about their relie and how happy they are that youre home, but i want to go back to the story because you say you were w stopped, youe out in the woods, and a man approached you with a knife. Did you get a good look at hahi . You been able to give a description to police . What happened there . Yeah. So much. So for the minor details, he came t. A big guy. Burly, bald headed. Tan skin. Just really surprised me and scared me. I thought my dog was going to be hacked up by him. I t wasd that do what he wants and hell refrain from using the knife on us. And it scared me enough to act pretty docile and let him think that i was going to go along with him, and got a chance to take off wh my dog and ran. And he was pursuing me. But i was only concerned about that forhe first day. I never saw him again after the first day. D an just had to concentrate on how to get through this, how to ge needed, how to gette wa how to get back to my family. I just wasnt sure where my husband exactly when i was lost, yeah all i could do was keepoing back up. Joe, i cant imagine what was going through your mind for four days as your wife is missing in the woods. Y what wer thinking, what were you doing during this time . Well, progressively every day, i was starting to lose pe. I became a man who was half a man. I couldnt imagine a life without her. As i w so unhappy and so depressed, i had to keep my act together. I needed to do everything i could to help her. Yesterday, i was the saddest man on the planet, and today, im the happiest man on the planet. Its acl mira i got my wife back. And i didnt think it was going to happen. I startedopo give up on the fourth day. Thats why we were leaving the mountain at that point. Well, its an incredib story. Thank you so much for waking up early to all of you, i know you must be so happy to have her backome with you. And i hope you get some rest today, too, because i know its out there. We are back with our series one giant leap. At this exact moment 50 years ago, the crew of apollo 11 was preparing to launch the Historic Mission to the moon. Youtill get chi when you think about it. Neil armstrong, of course, would st step ly take the f on the lunar surface, wearing a special spacesuit handmade to protect him, and decades later, was the suit itself that needed some extra protection. Harry smith joins us with more. Such cool stories. If you go to our website and go to oneiant leap, theyre all there. I love that. This one is one of the besty ones t. Imagine if you will all this technology that has to come to bear, but so much of it has to actually been done with a needle and thread. Take a lock. Apollo 11 had it all. The biggestck roet, fearless astronauts, and goal tha humans had dreamt of for millennia. But what to wear to such a big event . Dont laugh. These are real proposed spacuits designed. Not the rig t fit for guys with the right stuff. This design, though, succeed in ways that never occurred to us. That image of that black and white High Contrast video of Neil Armstrong stepping down on the surface of the moon. People dont remember Neil Armstrong making the step. They remember the suit making the step. Kathleen lewis is a curator of spacesuitsor the smithsonian. She says the spacesuit is really a spacecraft. Everything in a acecraft is required to do except move in orbit, a spacesuit does. Thats how you can operate. Do meaningful work andor lab on another world. A world devoid of air. A world under a constant barrage ofradiation, requiring a suit jam packed with science. And tailor made. This achievement inti innovaon and technology, and then at the end ofhe day,t still has to be sewn together by hand. By incredibly scrupulous hand. Cut and sewn and stitched together by women at delawares ilc dover. Among them, lily elliot, jo thompson, and ruth. It had t be perfect. It had toe on time. We were very thrilled. Very thrilled that we were helping a man go to the moon. It was phenomenal. An astounding 21 layers of materials stitched together witr no room f error. A split seam, a forgotten pin, could mean disaster. So many pins were allowed every day. You werent allowed to bring any from home. Couldnt use white head pins. Right, because they would blend in with the fabric and you couldnt tell if you had one in there or not. Tir attention to detail put to the test on the harsh lunar surface. Were you nervous though as he was Walking Around up there . No, not really. Becae i just had all the confidence that everything was going to be all right. I remember thinking, ifan hing goes wrong on that suit, it better not be the gloves because theyll come after me. Neil armstrongs spacesuit did its job, all right, but over thedecades, curators began to notice it was beginning to show its age. It was not made toast for very long. And we knew that that was due to the rubbers. You know. It deteriorated. It deteriorates naturally. It would cost a small fortune to fix up, so the folks at the smithsonian turned to kickstter. You waument ewanted to raise milliondollars. That was our initial ask. How long did it take. A little under a week. We were shell shocked. The money has been well spen with then conservatiorocess he plete, we figured maybe women who put it together 50 years ago should get an early glimpse. Hi, mr. Armstrong, were here 50 years late t looks brandnew. These women of delaware sewed their way into history. Hang on second, lady. When you look at this, this is our weha did it do you need a suit made for yourself . What a reunion. Prett cool, right . Yeah, okay. Now, are you ready . Yes. Kind o a reveal here. Something special for you, so you know, the real suit goes on display today at the air and space museum, the big one out by dulles airport. We have Neil Armstrongs suit here in studio 1a asell in 3d. Wow. Dont mess around. How do they preserve that . What is happening to that spacesuit . They clean it as meticulously as possible. Theres no preservatives you can put on it. When you go to the smithsonian today, it will be in this basically hermetically temperature controlled thing that will preserve it forss long a possible. So in this conservation process, they took 3d scans of the suit, posted itn their website this moaving, and they ge us the raw filee so w could recreate it for you right shere. Thind of cool looking. You look in, you see armstrongs name. You see how dirty it is. Look, you can see its really kind of nasty. With dirt down there, this is all from s that moon dirt . Lunar dust . It is. Those are very good questions. And the stuff, this moon dust, its not like dirt on earth. Its unbelievably fine particles. Its almost like groundup glass. It looks like you could brush it off. You cant. And at one point, exactly, you saw the tide stick, and they come back from the moon and they say what should we do with this . Somebody said take it to thecl ners. They did not. Thank goodness. Wow. So yeah, th is very aggressive stuff. Thats kind of cool, right . We love i they said if you try to brush it, the lunar specks could even get in the teflon. And so, oh, its the smithsonian at the mall. Sorry, i made a mistake. You cano see it today in its brandnew case. In washington, d. C. On the mall, not the big one out by dulles. Thats so cool. How neat to bring the women back together to beeu rted with the suit. Reunited and i feel so good. Thank you so much. On our website, we have all of these pieces were just getting started. Were going oo be honoring this anniversary all week long. So cool. Very cool. Thank you very much. Speaking of al celebrating the apollo 11 mission as well at the Kennedy Space center. Where are you now . Right now, were on launch pad 39b, an acte launch pad. Theyre doing work right now, but right across there, thats 39a. It can help erase the problems of that transition, make it easy. Shes already read it to my kids, and the love it. An excellent Product Placement there by my wife. , alow one organization is inspiring the next generation of computer scientists and inventors. Then coming up on the third hourf today, one of jfk jr. s closest friends shares her memories of the friend she knew. On the fourth hour, a surprise guest cohost tells us how to pull off the hottest trends at any age. One of us . That would be a big surprise. Its not. Its a real surprise. A real cohost. First, letsow go right dn to the Kennedy Space center for als check of the forecast. Todays weather is brought to yo guys, we are on top of the bile launch platform. 400 feet up. Its so high up, they have to put faa approved lights because its wn flight paths. Here you see in the distance, that is the Vehicle Assembly building. Rocket would be putth toge, and then on this mobile crawler that would carry it,ll carry a 2. 5 Million Pounds of that thing, it would either if it kept going straight, it would go to the launch pad 39a. And that is where in less than an hour 50 years ago, the apollo 11 Mission Launched for the moon. Its just so awe inspiring to be up here right now. This, im told, this is the view the astronauts see just before they take off. Ats pretty incredible. In fact, lets do a forecast for the moon. Just in case were thinking about taking ofth looner outlook. The forecast for there. Its a little toasty during the day. Thats right, the sea of a balmy 224 degrees. But dont worry, at nit, it drops down to minus almost 300. Oh, yeah. Thats not counting the windchill. Thats whats going on around the country. Hereng whats happe in your neck of the woods. My producer just said thats what we call wednesday here in the d. C. Area, when we have that temperature fluctuate that much. Very moon like. Up. , today is moving on the humidity is out there, andt well connue to see the humidity rise as we head into the weekend. Dangerous heat coming into our area as we get into the weekend. Now, we also have some chances rain later on today. And then again tomorrow into thursday. But looks like were dry through the weekend. 70s now, heade to the 90s today. So guys, you know, this took off at rn9 32 a. M. Easte time. Coming up on the third hour of today, well relive that launch. Well run it real time. Its really exciting. And by the way, if you want to take part, even if youre not here, you can take part in the 50than versary. Coast to coast, from california to washington, d. C. , jus t nasa. Gov and you can find out where in your community there celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon launch of apollo 11s gu back to you. So cool. Al, thank you so much. Well check back in in a minute. Upnext, willies better half, yes, Christina Geist, is right here. Shes got a new Childrens Book aimed at eing your kids pain over going back to school. First, this is to o welcome back. School may be out for the summer, but its never too early to start thinking about the first day ck. For some of our little ones going to a new grade or going to school for theirst time can be a bit scary. Th au Christina Geist is conquering the fear in her second picture book, called sorry grownups, you t cant go school. Good morning. Thank you. Youre also willies wife, which is why willie gets to sit next to you. I have moved over to the other couch. Im crashing the party. He can play the role ofg beamin husband to you. I loved your first book. I thiss the second in a series. And its so cute. Its all about kids who are kind oo nervous about starting the first day of sch or starting the first day of camp. Where did you get the idea . If you can imagine as grownup, if someone told you every year you were going to start a newh job wit a new boss in a new office, with totally new responsibilities, you would be overwhelmed too. So it can be a little bit daunting. And the idea was actually born not at back to school but at a mmer camp moment. When our daughter was 3, she was going to a toddler summer camp, and that might have been aggressive by me. For a 3yearold. But we were out at the beach wi my inlaws, with willies parents, a w about ak before camp, i started Walking Around the house and yelling out, im so sorry, grandparents cant go to camp. Dogs are not allowed at camp. Babies cannot go to camp. And it evolved to this chant th l onlyy can go to camp. Ly lucy can go to camp. And that sort of that philosophio rejected everybody else transcended for me into all these other moments of parenting including back to school. It kind of takes the fear out and empowers the kids. And christina has these crazy parenting instincts that i still havent fully undstood how she knows the right thing to do. Our kid lucy was nervous, and george to go to school, and all of a scudden they were holding come to school. It made them excited to go. D you s something i hadnt thought about until i talked to you about. So many Childrens Books, when ey set up a scenario, its kind of fear based. Three ss are always all of the school books in our library, particularly the preschool level, were feahrring the t ss. Someone is sad, theyre shy, or theyre scared. And those books have been written, they have been written beautifully, many of emth, but they leave me weeping at the door ofhe preschool classroom. I needed Something Different in myibrary and i wroteit. I have to say, thear reviews in, theyrd my son charlie. We had friends upstate a few weekends you brought the book and read it to the kids. Christina was like the pd piper. The kids were riveted. Yo kind of call out, and i would say to christina, can i go to school . She would say, are you a kid or a teacher . Only kids and teaers are allowed. Only kids and teachers. So we kind of repeat throughout the grownups, you cant go to school. For those of you at home who are going to get a home you have to promise me youre going to read ith gusto. G you have t them going on this chant. Sorry, grownups, you cant go to school. Its really, really a fun read. I obviously,ts the second in a series, bee wereg the characters kind of develop. We had the first book, which was all about the bedtime ritual,h whic is another thing. I get all my best parenting advice from christina. By the way, so do i. I get it from my mom who is here in the studio. So buddys bedtime features tro same bther and sister. You got to know lady jusin a t bit in that story, and now shes a more central character in this one. Your daughter lucy, who went obviously, is she 12no shes 12. I cant believe shes 12. But a couple years ago, she did a little todo list for her first day of school. Shes so cute. I think she posted it and she had in herind what she wanted to do on her first day of school. You had some advice for kids who are headed off to school. Yeah, so i think, look, im not a parntding experts. We just happen to be parents and we b haven through this, our kids are 10 an. R me, one of t tricks is not to have the first day of school be the only thing on the calendar. Make backpack shopping day into some kind of holiday on your calendar. Or at the end of the first week of school, have a yes day. Or a yes day f us is where you can go to the s grocerytore and fill the cart with all the snacks you want for your lunch box, and these things that are Little Details in a day, but can feel really big and special to a little person. Its great advice, and also clear off the scdule, right . Yes. Yes. So with all due respect to savannah and willie and all af you workin the today show. Youre at work when the rest of us are in the trenches dropping off. Particularly with the preschoolt transition, lear your calendar. Youre not going to work out. You may go in your work t clothes. Youreerot going to get the, not going to get to the conference call. Sit, lean in, make friends wthh other parents. Do what the Teachers Want you to do to make that transition. Sometimes it takes a couple weeks. It took ae coupl weeks for me more than once t just be there. And clear that schedule. W the book is super cute. Its a great to kind of introduce the n topic rightow as we start looking toward back to school. Whether youre going to kindergarten or going to later grades, its a really cute read. By the way, this is the story of my marriage. I sit in awe and watch christina perform. Thats my role here. I know. Christina, thank you so much. Again, the book is called sorry grownups, you cant go to sdool. We have more on it and other books to calm the back to school jitters. Today. Com shop. Check it out. Just ead, a special surprise for a Remarkable Group of kids. Kids who code. But first, this is today on nb o code. Whfi kids at coding camp is created together with our sponsor, am is sazon. Wh i dont even understand coding. Is it . So coding is what you put into the computer is what the computer will do. You kind of sound like a genius. Thank these Elementary School kids their nding most of summer playing video games. But its not what you think. So youre literally creating the game youre playing. Yeah. Each of them, some as young as 5 years old, are designing and programming the games all on their own. Ou y think other kids should learn to code . Yeah. Why . Because its fun. And its a good activity to do. Its all a part of coding with kids, an Education Program that hopes to inspire a new generation of computer scientists, engineers, and inventors. For the last five years, they have taught computercience skilled to more than 30,000 students across the country. We know were in the digital age, and were moving forward with all these careers that have to do with technology. And i think what it will do is really help them get that foundation. According to the bureau of labor statistics, computing jobs are one of the fastest growingh in t economy. And by the year 2020, there will be an estimated 1. 4 million in the united states. And then lets hit that. While not every child who learns coding may not go on to a Computer Science career,he foundational skills they learn are just as important. Not just about coding. They are learning critical thinking, lical thinking, cause and effect. Creative problem solving. Amazons future engineer program recently partnered with coding with kids to help reach evenore students. Congratulations. , scholarships the program has brought to underserved schools who may not have access to n. Ding educat schools like kaiser elementary, where students like pedro are getting handson experience at an ely age. How old are you again . I am 7. Youre 7 years old and you code . This is something amazing, an opportunity that is once in a lifetime, and we get to do it. What the kids didnt know is our spsor, amazon,ad something even more amazing in store. Their reaction was priceless. I cant even express how i feel right now. But the excitement among this young crowd said it i can tell you, it as exciting for the parents on the side. One thing we found interesting is all the different ways these kids can apply their coding skillsni later in t. Its not just about Computer Science. In fashion, design, ch arecture, so many careers. One kid i talked with, pedro, for example, he asked t go back. They let him do it an extra week because they didnt realize how much he would love it. What needs toha en,mo parents alst have to red cool for a kids. Theres so much aut sports and athletics, but i would kill for my kids to get into coding. We decided all of our kids are going to learn to code. You know what the kids like . Theres power in their fingertips. Youre not just playing a video game, youre controlling it.
