A major Health Warning this morning concerning the flu. The centers for Disease Control says nearly 40 states now are reporting moderate to high flu activity. So far, the flu season, the number of cases is far higher than last year. It could get much worse. Nbc medical contributor dr. Natalie azar is here with advice about how to keep you and your family safe. Good morning to you. Doctor, we hear about the flu every year. Seems every year there is a problem. Whats different this year . So theres a few ways to have a bad flu season. One is you just have increased flu activity. Youre seeing more cases. The other way is to actually have a strain thats predominating thats particularly dangerous and that the vaccine doesnt guess what . This year, were having the perfect storm of that. Increased activity. We are having a vaccine thats covering a couple of different strains. The one thats actually predominating is the one thats not covered as well by the vaccine. As you pointed out, we have over 40,000 cases that are already reported now as opposed to about 14,000 cases last year at this time. Wow. Which is certainly a big difference. Heres the challenge, if you say the vaccine not you but if we hear it is 10 effective, so many people will say, fine, i wont get a flu shot. Exactly. This is the important thing to remember. If you get a flu shot, itll cover three or four different strains. Okay. The 10 number is referring to one particular strain thats covered in the vaccines. It happens to be one of the more dangerous strains, so it is important. But the other strains are getting covered about 50 to 60 . If you get a flu shot, chances are, youre also going to be covered against the other strains. If you do get sick, even with the bad one, we believe the flu shot makes the illness less seer absolutely not too late. One of the explanations for why were seeing so many numbers right now is that perhaps the flu season has just peaked a little earlier than normal. Okay. Flu season lasts well into spring. We would expect cases to continue up to february. Takes two weeks for the flu shot to kick in, so you can get it now. Youll get your antibodies in two weeks. You will be protected. More importantly, youll protect other people in your community who are more vulnerable to getting sick from the flu. What should you do if you still get the flu . If you think youve come down with the flu, i would first pick up the phone and call your doctor. You want to know, should you get tested for flu . Sometimes its a false negative. Youre tested, its negative, what do you do . Either get tested for the flu or get started on antiviral medicine. Preferably within the first 48 hours. A couple are available.
