As you wake up, if youre stepping outside around 7 00, 8 00, 9 00, you want to bundle up. Temperatures in the mid to low teens. Its really the windchills that were worried about. Were looking at windchills close to 10 degrees below zero as you head to higher elevations. Most of the area close to zero as you wake up and walk outside this morning. Sources tell our nbc station in new york, the suspect is 16 years old and in custody. The victims include the suspects mother and grandmother. The suspect used an assault a girl and a man. Its not clear if theyre related or not. Police are calling it an isolated domestic incident and say theres no threat to any other family. David, back to you. Chris, thanks. Lets continue the breaking news. Firefighters have been battling flames at two separate fires in frigid weather. Firstlet start out with this one on buena vista terrace. It ripped through two floors and sent one firefighter to the hospital. Justin finch live on the scene with a look at how that firefighter is doing. What is the latest, justin . His injuries said to be nonlifethreatening after falling through a staircase in this Apartment Building behind us where the fire took place overnight. You can see its burned out at the top. A ladder going to the roof. Firefighters are inside ng of what caused this fire. We can take you down to images overnight from d. C. Fire. You will see the flames jumping from the building after 3 14, 3 15 this morning. When this fire is reported to have began here in southeast. We heard from neighbors that they were smelling a burning smell, perhaps a burning plastic and then saw a lot of smoke rush in. That was their cue to leave. Youre also hearing from the Fire Department that 14 people are displaced as a result of the fire. Back out live, i can tell you that it makes a job the temperatures below freezing, its turning to ice on the pavement, creating a falling hazard for firefighters and those now displaced. You can imagine very hard to put out the fire and do so safely in these conditions. Were live here in south back to you in the studio. Justin, we see how youre bundled up. Its got to be difficult for them. Lets take you to yet another Early Morning fire. D. C. Crews were using flares to unfreeze ladders because of what justin was explaining. It was so cold out there. Flames breaking out at a twostory row home before 1 00 this morning. That fire, as you can see, its out now. A wheelchair was taken from a neighboring home. No word on what started that fire. Over the weekend, Montgomery County fire crews were working overtime. Over a 24hour period, fire crews battled a dozen fires in the freezing conditions. Fire Officials Say this is unprecedented. The fire spike is partially because people were trying to keep their homes warm. One was at a home on jody terrace. Fire crews say it cough been prevented. Someone removed the fireplace ashes in an improper manner and fashion. They rekindled, reignited, burnt down a large component of that house. There was only one injury over the weekend. One firefighter slipped on the ice and was seriously hurt. Fire crews say smoke alarms alerted people caught inside burning homes and they got out. Today is the deadline to comply with the new law aimed at preventing home fire deaths. The rules vary based on when your home was built. In maryland, homeowners are required to replace their old smoke alarms with one that has a sealed battery. The new alarms will last for ten years. If youre caught without the new ones, you could face a misdemeanor. Developing this morning i, weve learned that ten americans have died in a horrific plane crash in costa rica. The plane went down on sunday in a wooded area off the investigators already back out there looking into a possible cause of that crash. We know five of those killed were family members from scarsdale, new york. A mother, father and their three boys. A Colorado Community begins 2018 in mourning. Five deputies were shot outside of denver yesterday while responding to a noise disturbance. One of them died. Two civilians were also caught in the crossfire. As nbcs Steve Patterson reports, portions of the attack were captured on one of the deputys radios. Shots fired, shots fired. A deadly shootout in what the sheriff is calling an ambush. We have one deputy down inside the apartment. All of us have been hit at least once. It all started as deputies responded to a disturbance call in a suburb outside of denver. Heard 15, 20 gunshots. Police say the gunman opened fire at the officers after barricading himself in his search, five deputies and two civilians, killing one deputy. All of them were shot very, very quickly. More of an ambushtype of attack on our officers. He knew we were coming sniept Police Warning residents to shelter in place and stay away from walls and windows as deputies killed the suspect. He was i fath. Sheriff Tony Spurlock visibly shaken. We are deeply saddened by the loss of zachary. When i sat with his wife and held her hand, i could see in her eyes her life was over. Police say all of the injured deputies are in stable condition. Among them, deputy jeff pell i, son of the Boulder County sheriff, recovering after well be feeling for a long time. Because in wagoner, oklahoma, kids go to school four days a week with an extra hour added each day. Even though the days are longer, i like having mondays off. A state facing a budget crisis and teacher shortage. Doubled from 51 to 97 or 20 statewide. Last year we were able to save 180,000. On such things as transportation, substitutes and yu tilts. In return, they retained more teachers, reinstated art classes. Discipline is down and attendance is up. Our kids are actually, because theyre here more often, because teachers are here more often, theyre receiving more educational instructional time. With in the bottom half in the nation, some state officials call it a tragedy. I dont think its good for kids. We have no evidence that says that this is helpful. That this increases student outcome. Back in wagoner, it softens the blow for some teachers who havent had a pay raise in nearly a decade. In our community, we feel teachers are valued. But statewide, we dont at all. Her name is ednal Virginia Green last seen by hospital staff at the Washington Hospital in takoma park. She was released from there on saturday. They havent heard from her since. If youve seen her, give police a call. The new year started with a new baby girl. The first baby of 2018 for Shady Grove Medical Center in rockville. The baby was born at 12 03. Weighed in at 7 pounds 6 ounces. Nice and healthy. Mom and baby are very happy and, of course, in good condition.
