Nerve racking, kind of sick to your stomach after seeing this right now. Reporter multiple vehicles were hit by the falling train car as others came crashing into the piles. The people that were in all the vehicle s, even though when you see the pictures its pretty h horrific, at this point nobody in the vehicles was fatal. Reporter 77 passenger ands five crew members were on board the train which was headed south from seattle to portland. Witnesses scrambled to rescue trapped su viervivors and helpet them to the hospital. Some had broken back and injuries, and broken ankles, and head trauma. News4 has learned a highly regarded doctor and his daughter were among three People Killed when their plane went down over the weekend in indiana. We are told dr. Lewis went to pickup his daughter from school. At some point during their flight from frederick they ran into instrument problems and the plane went down. He was a professor at the university of Health Sciences in bethesda. First at 4 00, its supposed to be a safe haven for Domestic Abuse victims, but now the people who live there say they are victims once again. Residents at the Family Crisis Center in Prince Georges County say the conditions there are almost unlivable. And they want something done about it. Bureau chief Tracee Wilkins is outside the center tonight. She tried to get some answrs tracee, what were you able to learn . Reporter well, these women who have escaped dramatic situations, serious situations, lifethreatening situations, and this is the office for the shelter. This is where the people who run things come to do their daily business. But the people who are living in the shelter that they help to control say that the situation is so bad, some of them are considering going back to the abusive situations they left. It makes you want to go back and thats not an option for me to go back. Reporter these women have escaped abusive relationships. Sometimes they were beaten, sometimes their kids were. After my kids got taken by cpf because of him, it was time to put on my big girl pants and step out and do it on my own for my kids. Reporter thats why they turn to the Family Crisis Center of Prince Georges County with grant money. Women we spoke with say their conditions got worse because of conditions inside the shelter. I have four kids. I cannot let my kids sleep in the room because of some code. I cant get my kids dressed in the room because its so cold. I have to get them dressed in the living room. Me and my children are getting sick often. Me and my children have stomachaches. I wasnt sure because of the food or mold thats in there. Reporter now, as we just mentioned the county gives a large portion of money to run this shelter. They released a statement from the county Executives Office saying the women and children whose life situation forced them to already use the shelter are already traumatized and we must be sure they are sheltered in a safe, clean and pleasant environment. After a power failure yesterday at the worlds Busiest Airport. The lights went out in georgia, right . Remember that song . Right now airlines are playing t reschedule thousands of passengers. Today alone more than 400 flights were canceled at hartsfieldjackson airport. Nearly four dozen flights were delayed. Overall the outage affected around 30,000 people at one of the busiest times of the year a week before the christmas holiday. Many of those people right here in our area. There were long lines at Reagan National airport as passengers tried to rebook their flights. We also talked with people who waited for more than four hours on the phone. One man broke out the violin to cheer passengers trying to sort through all the confusion. I was on a Family Vacation and we have to deal with this. Reporter whats this been like . Stressful, beyond stressful. I just want to get home. The issues are especially bad for Delta Airlines which is based in atlanta. Now, because atlanta is such a critical hub for airlines, recovering from this outage could take several more days. Yeah, Dan Scheneman contue caused the power outage and how people are recovering in atlanta. Ive been in one of these lines to one of these lines. Reporter the lights are back on at the worlds Busiest Airport but the chaos is far from over. This event affects thousands and thousands of people. We recognize that. Reporter an electrical fire took down hartsfieldjackson airport sunday. The ceo says the fire was in one of the switch gears and burned so hot it destroyed the redundant system powering the airport. Equipment failed, but our focus and our responsibility for this airport is to ensure reliability is 100 . It failed and now we have to respond and ensure it doesnt happen again. Really, what we have the utter failure of leadership, of planning, of honesty and integrity. Reporter more than 300 flights were canceled on top of the 1100 yesterday following the full ground staff. Eric ferguson was one of hundreds of passengers trapped on the tarmac for hours. We were on the six hours. Reporter thousands of passengers in the ticketing area looking for a flight out. The feeling would be herrer, and a mother is sharing her story only on news4. She tells Mark Segraves that Cleveland Elementary School in northwest washington in the shaw neighborhood let her daughter leave with the wrong person. Mark, how did this happen . Do we have an idea . Reporter we have somewhat of an idea what happened, and we can tell you that the person who took the child this all happened on friday afternoon here at Cleveland Elementary School. We know that the man who picked up the wrong girl was here to pickup his niece. So, he was someone who was allowed to be in the School Building and was supposed to be here picking someone up. But what we are told about the policy and the protocol is you come here after school, you walk in through these doors, there is a table there with a list of names of the children in after care. You sign next to the name of the student you are picking up and that student is brought to you and you go home. And thats what happened friday afternoon. Accept they brought the wrong 3yearold girl down and the man left with her anyway. It was like that hour that she spent here with police frantically hoping that her child would be found. Because oh, my god, what happened to my daughter, what if something happened to her . Who is she with . Who came to pick her up . Because i had no idea. You know, what was going on. I just i was really devastated. Im still traumatized about the situation. Reporter now, police did question the man. He said that the young girl answered to the name of his niece and thats why he thought he had the right child. D. C. Public schools says they are investigating this incident. This is not the first time there has been trouble here at Cleveland Elementary School. So far this year, police have been called at least three times. You will recall last month we reported on a teacher who was arrested for assaulting a student. We have also reported that the head of the after care here was also investigated for allegations that she assaulted a child. She has been placed on administrative leave and a lot of parents tell us that since that all happened that the after their words, chaos. Thats the very latest here at Cleveland Elementary School. Pat, back to you in the studio. Mark, you answered one question and that was how did the man, why he left with a child who wasnt his. But the niece has the same name as the child he picked up . Reporter now, the mother did not want to identify her child, but what she did tell me, i asked her did they look alike. She said they dont look alike at all, but their names are similar and the mother told me that that may have been part of the confusion because their names are similar. But again, you know, this mother told me she said she told her daughter in the future, if anyone comes to pick you up who is someone you dont recognize, start screaming. Some of the computer models going 70 degrees on Christmas Day. That would be extremely rare. Chance of rain on christmas, too, but i guarantee you this forecast is going to continue to change. It is a very tough one because there is cold air with this system. Look where we go. 66 on christmas, 35 the day after, and by the time we are ending this year, down to 29 degrees next thursday. There are reports at least six people have been killed, dozens more have been injured. The amtrak cascades was on its firstever run this morning when it went off the tracks above interstate 5 just outside tacoma. One train car crashed onto the highway below, another was left dangling from the bridge. Drivers had no chance to get out of the way. Witnesses raced to try to help the victims. Right now investigators believe no one on the road below was killed. Early information from investigators is that the train may have hit something on the tracks. Stay with news4 and well keep in the meantime back here in our area, talk about a reallife grinch, someone stole a mans car over the weekend. To make matters worse, the owner claims it was loaded with hundreds of dollars worth of christmas presents. News4s Darcy Spencer is live now at a tow lot in landover maryland and this started with a lost set of keys. Darcy . Reporter it certainly did. You know, the good news is that that car was recovered. This man desperately searched for this car all weekend long. It was found in southeast washington. It was towed right here to this lot. He has not been able to get into the car yet, but he strongly believes that all of the gifts that were in the trunk of the car are gone, so this story is not over. Lets show you some video of this car. It belongs to steve hawkins. He says he parked it at the mall at prince georges on saturday in hyattsville to do some holiday shopping. He says he must have lost his keys in the mall, trying something on. As steve got hold of the keys and using the remote probably, found the car, and stole it. He said he had thousands of dollars in gifts in the trunk of the car and, again, he is sure that whoever stole the car probably stole these gifts. Hes thankful to get his car back. From what we can tell it looks like its in pretty good condition. Its happened before. Kids will be kids. Im glad i got my car back. And even if they would have caught the guy, i wouldnt have pregsed no charges, i wouldnt have done that. Why not . Its the holidays. There are the typical gifts of toys for children, but there are the necessities. Clothing, personal items for battered women, some of whom escaped with little more than the clothes they wear. That makes this drive so important. The heroes that actually are the women th a shelters that are willing to step away from the guys that are not treating them right. It forecast because were going to see such cold and warm air masses battling it out right around our area. First i want to quickly walk you there you your travel outlook. Thursday and friday no problems with travel, but on saturday some light rain showers. At that point it does look mild in our area. But heres what were talking about with that High Pressure coming down, a polar plunge into the midwest. Even down into texas. But notice where the warm air is. Along the east coast, m midatlantic, especially up into new england. Notice how the warm air in our area, but the cool air back to the west when i say cold, i mean frigid air to support snow showers. Anything falling from the sky is only going to be rain. Of course it is the day after christmas when that cold arctic area moves into the area and it looks like it will stay with us through the new year. Right now on christmas, 66 degrees for a high. So, warm mostly cloudy and maybe some showers. But, doug, its the majority of the day is if that cold and warm air battle changes a little bit, we could be back to colder air. Right now trending warmer. This is mild. Were talking about a difference of 100 miles with the storm. Wherever this goes, somebody is going to get extremely cold air and some of these areas are going to be extremely warm. This forecast may be changing. I dont grow up saying i i hear people saying, i love you, im like, are you sure . I kind of question that. But like im getting there. Im getting used to it. I started off first with my best friend because we had never had that communication. And then once i told him, he told me back that he loved me. So, i knew it wasnt a challenge at that point. And i started going out and i told people at my church. And they were really impacted by that just by their facial expression and their body language. The ultimate goal is to spread positivity, spread happiness between people. We want everyone to understand love is a powerful force that is within every person. If youre sincere, people can read you. This was the inaugural route for this new amtrak line that runs between olym but the train went off the tracks at an overpass that goes over interstate 5 in dupont, washington. This is a newly upgraded rail line. At this point were told at least six people have been killed. When the train went off that overpass. More than a dozen of the railcars derailed, some of them landing on the road below. We are also told that five vehicles, two semis were involved. And just a short time ago we heard from a passenger on that train. This was a retired amtrak worker who wanted to be part of this first day on this new rail service. Things just started to tip over and as it was going around, and all of a sudden just ended up on side, everything went dark and stuff started flying around, that was it, it stopped.
