Prince georges county police are investigating this as an accident. No charges expected, but now there are two roads to healing. One for the 11yearold who was injured, and also for the neighbor who accidentally fired that gun. Were going to fight to get him back to where he was. Reporter when mark made i home from a business trip in california, this is how he found his son caleb. He had been accidentally shot just above his heart by a close family friend and neighbor. A 33yearold purple heart recipient. He was packing up his 9 millimeter when it discharged, striking caleb. He did everything he could possibly do, from a military mind frame, and got him to andrews. Reporter it was the beginning of what would be numerous surgeries. A few weeks later caleb is doing much better. Now there is the emotional healing that needs to begin between caleb and the neighbor who accidentally shot him, a man who was more like his best friend. They had a little chat, you know, talked about the injury, talked about where to go from here on. My son and him are so close that, you know, my son cried and he cried. For me, the most important thing was getting both of them together and working on their relationship. In northwest, im tracee wilkins, news4. Wow. Developing now in baltimore, police say a murder suspect put the entire city in jeopardy after leading police on a wild chase. All while shooting randomly at people on the street and this happening while city schools were being let out early because of the snow. Now, you can see this Massive Police presence where the chase ended today. Baltimore police say the man shot at five people, including officers while that chase was going on. He shot two men, one may not survive. And another man had a heart attack during the chaos. The suspect is now in custody. Right now, two people are wanted for an armored truck robbery at a bank of america in Prince Georges County. Now, police are telling me this crime was planned and well orchestrated. Lets show you some video from earlier today when the scene was very active. Police tell me the robbers were armed. They pulled off in a purple van and robbed the truck guards as they were loading cash into the atm. Now, the suspects drove to a nearby office building, got out, and according to several witnesses, drove off in yet another car. Now, police have that purple van towed so it can be processed for evidence. This is obviously a brazen robbery in the middle of the day. This business was open for business. We have not seen a case like this in a long time. Reporter the Prince Georges County police are working with the fbi in this investigation. They say they have recovered Surveillance Video from the bank. They are in the process of going the suspects. They tell us they are very confident they are going to make some arrests. Back to you. There is no legislation behind it, but this is the councils attempt to weigh in and get some information on this scandal. Now, it all stems from a report. This is in the wake of that report that was done by National Public radio and local public Radio Station wamu. And what it did is it said ballous 100 Graduation Rate for 2017 included some students who didnt meet the requirements because of excessive absences or who just were not prepared to graduate. , ballou and parents were among those testifying. And they say that they are bearing the brunt of the criticisms and that the report and the numbers in that report dont tell the whole story. First of all, the accusations that were made were from former teachers and that a lot of people claim that its all about the students. But they didnt take into account what students had to say until after the damage was done. If a student misses one class period they are marked absent the entire day. If it looks like a student misses 60 days of school, it doesnt mean they missed 60 full days of school. They may have only missed the last period, or took care of a younger sibling and missed the last five periods. It is an inaccurate picture. Reporter there are indications they are looking at ways to change the system of reporting what an absence is whether it is one period or for the whole day. She ultimately confessed and faced 20 years in prison, plus the jury had different plans. News4s david culver explains from Fairfax County court. Reporter she admits she made a mistake. One that got her locked up and facing felony theft charges here at Fairfax County court. I met the single mom in her falls church apartment. She tells me last year at 19 she was desperate. She had a toddler, was pregnant, all alone. She stole jewelry from a home she cleaned. As the Washington Post tom jackman first reported, she only confessed after police questioned her and two other potential suspects. She ended up returning the stolen jewelry. In july, a jury convicted her of the felony. Something about her story impacted them. He served as the foreperson. I could see in her that she was a good person, that made a to do about it. Reporter just last week the judge imposed the jurys sentence, a fine of just 60. Whats more, after that case ended, the jurors took up a collection amongst themselves and just handed Mendez Ortega the money, 80. Not everybody happy about how this story turned out. In fact, the family from whom she stole, they say they feel like she needs to take accountability. That she lied throughout the investigation. Thats what they told the post. I reached out to them today, went by their home. Didnt get a chance to talk with them. As far as she is concerned, she said she is grateful that she has a Second Chance and shes also grateful to those generous jurors. In fairfax, im david culver, news4. Frost was shot in the head during the massacre in las vegas earlier this fall. She still got a long way to go, but the fact that she survived is nothing short of a miracle. News4s shomari stone talked to her father at a fundraising event last night. It is an interview youll see only on news4. It is a christmas miracle. Reporter rich frost counts his blessings. His daugh hospital and at home in ann arundel county. It is a struggle, an adjustment. She has to get used to nonhospital life. Shes not ready to be out in public. Reporter we met up with them at a fundraiser for his daughter at groto pizza. He wears a tshirt that says tina tough as he thanks the community. Makes me feel good to see this and thats why i came out tonight. Reporter tina frost was at Johns Hopkins hospital for about two months after she was hit in the head by a bullet in the las vegas mass shooting. Doctors removed the bullet which was lodged into her eye to save her life. She had a good day today so thats allegati thats always a plus. I have been following her on the internet. Reporter people who dont even know tina donated. Its just a blessing that were able to help her. The most important thing is family, friends and community. And shes getting that. Reporter the grand jury report says officials to excessive drinking by fraternity members, allowing a studentrun Fraternity Council to oversee greek life which created a dangerous and ultimately deadly environment on campus. The ioc selfregulation was a joke and a catastrophe. Reporter the report released today is the latest in the Ongoing Investigation into the death of 19yearold tim piazza who died after a fall during a night of heavy drinking during a pledge bid party. We are shaken by the penn state longtime knowledge of dangerous hazing. Reporter an attorney for the family spoke after the findings were made public. The piazzas believe unquestionably and undoubtedly that penn state is complicit and has a direct causal role in the death of their son. Reporter rich bram blames the university in part for the death of his son marqise who repeated hazing. No one should die just because they want to join a fraternity. That shouldnt be okay. Reporter still, it continues to happen at universities across the country. At least five students have died in hazing incidents this year. Dozens more have been rushed to hospitals leading to renewed calls for strict University Supervision of greek organizations, stronger laws, and punishment for individuals and organizations involved in hazing.
