New numbers in the federal governments crackdown on gang violence. Attorney general Jeff Sessions and the new secretary of Homeland Security blame the violence on what they call failed immigration policies. One tragic example is the resurgence of ms13. Only ten miles from our nations capital, gang members earlier this year, ambushed choked and stabbed a victim more than 1900 times. Cut off his head, tore out his heart, and then buried him. Kirsten nielsen appears to be referring to a victim in the spring found in Wheaton Regional Park in september. Why they say the government failed them when it came to receiving their disability checks. And its the senate race that is still too close to call. We are live in alabama with a nbc4 is working for you. Looking into a monumental problem impacting our veterans. The va sending thousands of overpayment to veterans and years later demanding the money be paid back in full. Tonight, consumer reporter susan hogan is getting answers and money back for some local vets. Well, at a recent congressional hearing, lawmakers demanded concrete action from the va. Now, the va admits it sent more than 260,000 benefit overpayment notices this year. Compare that to all of last year. It told congress it sent 238,000. Sounds like a costly mistake, but the va mostly blames events such as marriage or children that would affect their monthly checks. The veterans we spoke with, though, pushed back on that arguing the va has a communication problem and veterans are paying the price. Ivan daniel is a manavy veteran. He qualified for disability benefits and started receiving payments in 2006. 1100 every month. The disability check was in addition to his retirement check, which was 1200 a month. With a wife and five children all under the age of 19, isaac relied on both checks. Up to this point i had nothing but wonderful things to say about the va. But out of the blue this thing happened. Reporter that thing was this letter from the vas Debt Management center, sent to isaac in 2016. It states the va 18,000 more than what he was entitled to receive. Once i retired, i still had children and a wife and all of a sudden in 2006 they said, you didnt have them any more. According to their records. Reporter the va told isaac he never updated nor returned a dependent verification form sent to him. They said, i never received it, never. Reporter when isaac called the va to question the debt, he found out that the va had sent the dependent verification form to an address he lived at 35 years ago. Isaac thought he updated all his information when he applied for a va loan and moved to fort washington, maryland. So, everything was up to date. Everything was, except for the one place which was the disability area. Reporter and thats why the Debt Management center began to garnish his disability check, all 1100 of it to pay back what the va says it overpaid him dating back to 2006. The sudden stop in disability hard. Isaac is just one veteran we heard from. Navy invet avet and retired air said he owed 22,000. In his case he said he never received any disability benefits during the time frame the va said he did. They said that somebody was receiving it. But it wasnt you . Not me. Who was it . I have no idea. Robert sullivan, a navy vet retired in 2005, he says he received two separate direct deposits from the va totaling more than 13,000. But didnt know why. When he called the v alooking f va looking for an answer, he didnt get one. They were very vague about it. Reporter robert admits he spent part of that money when he got in a bind. The va sent him a letter asking him to pay it all back. I dont have it now. Do this day do you know why you got that money . To this day n have in common, they say the va had the wrong information when it came to depend ants on their disability benefits. They no longer believed i was married. In fact, they didnt believe that i had ever been married. And had questioned whether he had children. Since contacting news4, both robert and saulys cases have been settled. He also reached out to congressman connolly who stepped in to advocate on his behalf. There is a level of incompetence that is, you know, irksome, but to the individuals affected, it can be quite earth is that the erring. Today isaac says his disability benefits are back to what they should be. They then refunded all the money back to me and gave me my Monthly Payments back. But members of congress say the problem with Record Keeping and Communications Still exists. Its not only happening, but it actually threatens the familys budget. Or keep food on the table. Now, congressman connolly of course is just one advocate for these veterans. The va has yet to give congress any concrete plan to fix the problem. However, this past summer it did start offering a 12month payment plan for veterans who could not pay back the payment in full. The va secretary denied our numerous requests for an interview. Wo we are working for you and we will of course stay on top of the story. Back to you. Susan hogan. Very frustrating. So, its time to grab the puffy coat and the blankets. Going to be a hot toddy kind of night. Doug is back with a look at how cold it is going toeel ft back to the big showdown in alabama, voters are deciding whether republican roy moore or Democrat Doug Jones will become their next u. S. Senator. And the stakes are incredibly high for both parties. We want to bring in nbcs Gabe Gutierrez life. Take us through what this means for both parties depending on who wins. Reporter leon and doreen, yes. All eyes are on this race. The polls here set to close in just over an hour or so. And all indications are that at this point it is an extremely close race, which is quite remarkable for such a ruby red state. As you mention, republican roy moore has been battling allegations ever Sexual Misconduct with teens. Now for several weeks he has consistently denied them. Today he went in to vote on horseback as he has been known to do. He continued to deny the allegations. For him the key will be turning out evangelical voters, his conservative base. For Democrat Doug Jones, hes been spending the past few weeks targeting africanamerican voters and trying to mobilize them to come out to the polls, but i also need to peel off moderate republicans, suburban women especially who might be disgusted with the allegations against roy moore. This race has huge implications nationally for the future of the Senate Republican majority. Of course, President Trump endorsed roy moore several days ago. He recorded a robocall for moore and the past several days president obama and vicepresident biden recording robocalls for doug jones. Now, this race again as we said is extremely close. Early exit polls suggest that something up surprising in this ruby red state, that President Trump won by almost 20 points in 2016, supports among likely voters is now 4848 and half of the voters here do not believe the allegations against roy moore. So, evenly split down the middle. We are hoping obviously to get the indications from the actual votes tallied. Little over an hour, the results will be very closely watched throughout the night. Guys, back to you. Gabe, as you know, a lot of skepticism about the polls in this race. Talk to us a little bit about what do we know so far about turnout . Either candidate have any reason to feel hopeful because of the turnout right now . Reporter sure, both campaigns say both campaigns right now are saying they are encouraged by the turnout. Of course very different groups each candidate will noi need. The Roy Moore Campaign think they will have a good night. You talk to the Doug Jones Campaign they think theyll have a good turnout based on absentee ballot. There was interest leading up to the race. Certainly we will be watching very closely the next few hours to see which candidate comes out on top. Thank you. We should know more in a few hours. Nbcs Gabe Gutierrez. Thank you, gabe. Thank you. It is already there in many areas. Down to 16 in martinsburg, 22 gaithersburg, 23 right now in manassas, and 28 in fredericksburg. So, what a difference. Weve already dropped by about 20 to 30 degrees in some locations as far as that feels like temperatures go. And it is going to continue to drop overnight tonight, too. I mentioned some snow. We have snow back here towards parts of warren county, toward parts of southern maryland, very light flakes here. It is coming down around waldorf, fredericksburg, leonard town area.
