Yeah, a lot of concern around what the roads will look like, but as you said, it wasnt too bad. We brought in the person who might be able to tell us whats going to happen. The expert. Listen, lauryn, 34 degrees, thats good news. Absolutely right. Here in d. C. , those temperatures are above freezing. There is still some areas that were going to ha this morning patchy black ice. So please be careful. You can see outside the district temperatures are in the upper 20s and lower 30s at this point. So again, temperatures will continue to come up, but this morning it is a little chilly. Now, Something Else thats going to come on up are going to be the wind gusts. Winds are going to continue to move up to about 30 miles an hour today. So not only are we going to have those winds, were also going to have the chilly temperatures, and that means windchills are going to be in the teens this morning, 20s by the rest of the day. But plenty of sunshine. We had some lets go back to that map we had some snow, obviously, late yesterday throughout the day, and a little slower our start than actually we were going to see, but nothing showing up on the radar right now, so again, were looking good through the day, but we still have snow in the tenday forecast and well goat that coming up in about ten minutes. More snow. Thanks, lauryn. Well, some of the heavier bands hit Southern Maryland, of course. And news4 traveled down to st. Mary totals reached 3 1 2 inches. As tuss said, our news4 crew stopped at the Convenient Store and deli in richmond and all over there, people seem to be pretty excited about the snow. Down here we take it as it comes. We enjoy the weather. I havent seen snow in 12 years. Id say this time we took the brunt of it, from what i hear, down on this end. I dont know, i havent been up the road yet to see whats up there. Up the road, even more clear pavement, as you see there. The storm was more decorative than dangerous. But things werent so pretty for drivers in parts of virginia. Heres a live look on i95 northbound at springfield and the boulevard here. You can see theres actually a crew out there working right now. Virginia state police say they responded to more than 200 crashes yesterday. Many people are now waking up without power. We spoke with Dominion Energy overnight. They tell us more than 3,500 folks are still without por than 13,000 still in the dark across the state. And a steady snow has blanketed most of the east coast. Just take a look here. You can see the winter storm dropped more than a foot of snow on parts of the western part of north carolina. The National Weather service reported more than 14 inches of snow in burnsville. Thats just a few hours northwest of charlotte. And the tristate is blanketed in snow as well. This is a look at the snow in new york city. A veteran agent with the fbi and a decorated member of marylands Fire Marshals Office were both killed along 270 on friday night. [ sirens ] those sirens you hear there from the procession that traveled through rockville last night. Police and firefighters escorted the body of lieutenant sander cohen as people saluted along the road there. Cohen grew up in rockville. Hed been volunteering as a firefighter since he was 16 years old. On friday night, he stopped to help fbi agent carlos wolff, who crashed they waited for help on the side of the road. Cohens colleagues are still dealing with this loss. I think its really just his smile and his demeanor. Everybody here liked him. He brought a sense of comradery. He was very dedicated, very dedicated. He worked a very demanding job, long days, and he would still come here and volunteer in the community. Black ribbons and bunting now drape the trucks cohen once rode in and the gear he wore to save lives. His funerals expected to take place later this week. And meanwhile, the fbi also mourning the loss of special agent wolff. Yesterday it sent out a tweet offering condolences to his family, his friends, and his colleagues. They say that the veteran agent worked out of the fbi headquarters in northwest d. C. Three other people were hurt during those crashes on friday night, but theyre all expected to be okay. Maryland state police are still working to figure out what caused all of those accidents. Two people have lost their lives after aa crashed into a san diego home saturday night. Authorities say the plane and home were found in the Clairemont Mesa neighborhood completely engulfed in flames. The plane was carrying four people when it went down. Two were found dead at the scene. Two others were taken to the hospital. No word yet on their condition. The faa believes the plane was taking off from an airport only about a half mile away, but the cause of the crash is still under investigation. And a fiveacre brush fire broke out in the hills of monrovia, california, saturday night, forcing all of the three homes on the street there to evacuate. The fire was first reported at around 8 00 p. M. Last night. An evacuation shelter has opened up for residents who were displaced. Time right now is 6 07. Voters in alabama may be getting a call from President Trump. A white house official has confirmed to nbc news that the president reported a lastminute robocall for gop Senate Candidate roy moore. That official says the call was recorded yesterday afternoon. President trump got on a stage and urged people to vote for moore. The support comes even as the candidate faces multiple accusations of sexual misconduct. Moore has largely denied all of those allegations, and hell face off against Democrat Doug Jones on tuesday in the special election there. Were going to talk more about all of this coming up with chuck todd in just about a half hour here on news4, so stick around for that. Well, its what you wont see on metro anytime soon that has the Catholic Church promising to fight. Were going to tell you what the Transit Agency refused to do and the court that just agreed to uphold it. But first, lets take a look outside where the district is covered in snow this morning. As we mentioned, a lot of Southern Maryland saw the brunt of it. Lauryn is back with a look at when we could see some the stufoff all right, well, we all know how much fun playing in the snow can be. But doing so at the Smithsonian National zoo, well, they have fun, too. Of course. Check out this adorable oh, of course we have to have the pandas rolling around. The National Zoo Tweeted out this video of one of the pandas, mei xiang, rolling around in the snow yesterday. They say most of the animals are selected based on their ability to enjoy our different weather patterns. So how about that . We dont always think about that but they have to go through four seasons. And cannonball, rolling down the hill. So sweet. I love that. Very, very cute. Im sure anybody watching that yesterday was thrilled to see that. I know our eun yang would have loved that. Big panda person. She probably wouldnt have known what to do with herself. Very cute. Well, were talking about more snow possibly heading our way. Bring it on. It was nice to watch yesterday. I dont kn it, but the kids sure enjoyed it. From texas up to here, the kids enjoyed the show. Meteorologist bob ryan was facebooking out pictures of his grandsons enjoying snow in houston, where they have an ittybitty snowman. So everyone else from the deep south through d. C. Enjoyed this gorgeous snow and now we have more on the way. Lets show you whats going on as of this morning. Weve got the gusty winds. Those winds will be picking up through this morning. Thats going to be really the main story of the day. And more cold air coming. In fact, weve got a shot of cold air thats going to move right in for wednesday. Some snow in the forecast as well because were cold. Were warmer next weekend. Temperatures are going to be nearing normal, which is in the 50s. Current temperatures out there right now. You can see a lot of the region below that freezing mark. So again, if youre headed out on the roadways, watch for some black ice. I saw a little bit on the way in, but again, you can never be too careful. The winds should dry out the roadways through the morning. Theyre going to continue to increase. In fact, we could have some gusts up to 30 miles an hour throughout the day today. Temperatures staying to right around 40 degrees. It is going to be blustery throughout the day today. So if youre headed out to brunch, temperatures are in the 30s. There could be a few flurries out there, but again, watch out for those slick spots. Otherwise, well have some sunshine. Nothing showing up on radar right now. Temperatures are going to be 40 degrees for today, low 40s for tomorrow as well. Not as windy. Tomorrows going to be quiet before weve got more snow coming our way. So again, tomorrow were going to have some sunshine as you head back to work, but then as we head into your Tuesday Morning, we could have some snow, we could have a little bit of mix. Now, this is monday overnight into tuesday. So we would have to watch for potential delays early on Tuesday Morning. Otherwise, were looking good as we continue through tuesday. So a look at your tenday forecast. Morning showersnow mix on tuesday. Otherwise, windy on wednesday. Thats our next big change. Temperatures on wednesday are in the low 30s. In fact, windchills in the teens all day on wednesday. Another chance of snow on thursday. All right, lauryn, thank you very much. Reporters notebook is up next. Stories. Good morning and thanks for joining us for this edition of reporters notebook. Im chris lawrence. This is where were going to dive into some of the stories that youve been hearing about all week. This week i am joined by Scott Macfarlane and tom sherwood. Guys, thanks for being here. Scott, i want to dive into a little bit an interview that you did with the Deputy Attorney general, Rod Rosenstein. What was the significance of what he told you in terms of the investigation into russia. Him sitting down for an interview itself was significant, Rod Rosenstein, the only person in america who has the ability to fire Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating russian meddling in the 2016 election and whos already brought charges against four members of the Trump Campaign. He talked about many things, but we talked about the special counsel. He was limited in what he could say, but this is what he did say, that he is satisfied so with what hes seen from the special counsel and by the administration and management of that office, pivotal considering mr. Rosenstein is the only person who could move mueller out of office. Not President Trump himself. Not President Trump himself, no members of the Trump Administration itself, only Rod Rosenstein, because Jeff Sessions recused himself as a campaign surrogate in 2016. Mr. Rosenstein was careful with his words, but this is the first time weve heard from him on the topic of Robert Mueller, a topic thats transfixed the nation. And to remind people, he was the u. S. Attorney in maryland for a decade, right . More than a decade. More than a decade, with a sterling reputation. Is he worried at all that all this investigation and Politics Around the investigation could hurt his own reputation . Well, certainly, his name is a National Name now, and for 12 years as he was u. S. Attorney in maryland it was a local name. He was prosecuting corruption in prince georges county. He was prosecuting with a great reputation. Great reputation. Firearms cases in Baltimore County and montgomery. So he had a local presence, but but he also has a national job. He oversees the operations of the u. S. Justice department, an enormous agency with more than 100,000 workers and a broader portfolio as in any in government. Maybe he can get the elevators fixed in the Old Department of justice building. Thats a terrible place there. And as we talk more about this National Politics sort of having a direct bearing on a lot of local officials and our lives here locally, one of the things im interested in is the tax plan currently making its way through congress. How do you, tom, through your reporting, what are you seeing as some of the possible effects when we talk about subsidized housing, especially in the district . Well, one of the issues is the republican plans may cut out tax breaks for developers who build Affordable Housing for seniors, Workforce Housing and lowincome people. And muriel bowser, the mayor of the citys quite worried about since 2010, the district has spent nearly has allowed to be spent 2 billion on over 9,000 units of Affordable Housing in the city, and in the city, its increasingly expensive for people to live here. So, she took an extraordinary move this past week. She announced shes going to let 500,000 in housing bonds before the beginning of the month in case the law changes, so she can still do 4,000 units of Affordable Housing in the next three years. She wants the money in the pot so it wont be cut out. Then if, say the tax deal changes, that money is still there, they can still move forward she made a point that if the tax break goes away, then the money is safe. She says even if it goes out and the tax break stays, they still are going to go forward with the housing, because one, they want to do it, and two, the city needs Affordable Housing. As the week ended, this tax plan sat in a Conference Committee, which is a small who are negotiating the house deal and the senate deal to create a final deal on which everybody will vote, and there are so many impacts of this tax deal on our area tax breaks for mortgage payments, for college loans, for, you know, states that have higher local taxes like maryland. But in this Conference Committee, in this small number of members of congress who have gathered together to figure out what the final deal will be, there are no local voices. Obviously, the District Of Columbia has no Voting Member of congress, so no representation there, and overwhelmingly democratic delegation in maryland, so no majority representation there, and the same is true in virginia. So were among the jurisdictions, the wealthy jurisdictions in the country, were the target, the bulls eye for having a lot of adverse activity. We could lose this could affect our Property Values, obviously, your income taxes, all types of everything we described. Your Property Values from the mortgage Tax Deduction to the Tax Deduction for areas of higher local taxes. Thats maryland, and thats new york state, thats california, and the republican es off this tax bill, but there really are no republican votes in the metropolitan d. C. Area, at least not in maryland, to peel off. And when you look at some of these, how they will affect people very differently, you know, as opposed to the tax cuts, purely tax cuts that george w. Bush put forward, its sort of a blanket, one big blanket. Everyone pretty much saw a cut in their taxes. This is more pinpointed, and People Living in different parts of the country, in say, arkansas, florida, south carolina, are going to feel this very differently than folks in northern virginia, maryland, the district. If youre a lower income person and you do a standard deduction, this is going to be doubled, so thats going to help those folks, but its the middle class who may see some shortterm breaks and under the long term their taxes may go up. Its already infused our local economy because lobbying has been at a peak level. Lobbyists have descended on the capitol to talk to Conference Committee members to try to move this, move that, among more of the vocal lobbyists are the realtors, because this could truly impact home values. And as you know, the president desperately wants a victory before the end of this year. Well, yeah. I mean, hes and i think after what happened with health care, you heard a lot of the republicans on capitol hill basically saying there was just no way this was going to fail. Tax reform had to go through in some way, shape or form. It has been a remarkable year, though, given the north Korea Nuclear policies of this week, the Jerusalem Decision for the embassy, the internal discord in the country. Its just been a remarkable year, and so the president does need something where he can say its a positive thing. And he set a deadline of december 22nd when he wants this on his desk. Thats an ambitious deadline. Well see if h all right, guys, thank you very much. Well be bck with more on the a welcome back to reporters notebook. Chris lawrence joined with Scott Macfarlane and tom sherwood. Tom, for those of us who have lived in the district, doesnt matter pretty much where you live, youve dealt with the rat problem. I remember my apartment, nice place, but you saw rats outside. No matter what you do, there are rats. There are rats in d. C. , but now it looks like the district is trying to say weve got to get the restaurants involved, that they seem to be saying the restaurants are a prime source of the problem. The Food Service Industry. Yeah. And to be fair to the district, there are all rats in the areas, norway rats. And people told me this past week, theyre as big as cats in some places, and people are really sick of them. I talked to a woman on capitol hill who was a she lived up there for 20, 30 years. She carried the clipboard through her alley with the names of all her residents and indicates wherever a rat has been seen and whats been done, and the Health Department has been sending crews in to eradicate the rats. Its not working. There are so many rats. So, the council, the Ward Six Council member this week proposed a bill that would get tough on Food Service Industries that, like, leave grease out and trash out, and it would stiffen the fines. Dont know what theyll be yet, but theyll be much higher. And he says if these Food Service Industries dont do the job of keeping their places clean, the city for the first time will have the right to move in, clean up the place and then put liens on the business. That way they think they can get control of the rat problem. One of the issues the city cant control is that we have warmer winters. Used to be wed have winters and many of the rats would die off in the winter. They dont die off anymore because its warm. So theyre just flooding every urban area, virtually, in america. I would think if youre one of the dozens of people who serve the District Of Columbia on the ancs, the neighborhood commissions, this is going to be one of the things you get the most calls about or one of the things you get frequent calls about. Its a real retail issue for constituents and citizens based in the District Of Columbia and thats your first call. Ive spoken with anc represent glivz october and november, its about fielding the rat inquiry. And we did some stories from our station, me and many others, weve gone out with the mayor and rat control issues. Theyre putting out public trash cans that are harder to get inside and just a number of things, but the Food Industry is where the rats theyre the ones, they eat the food, the grease from the grease containers, the trash thats left in the back alley. So, basically, this is the district saying youve got to clean up your backyard. Youve got to get tough. Basically, youve got to clean up your backyard. Some of the anc commissioners who testified this week law to be that all food waste has to be kept inside of buildings, not in the back alley or back property lines and kept inside until its carried away by but you know, a lot of small restaurants and food stores, convenience stores, dont have room for that kind of stuff, so its a real serious issue, but the citys really not taking a hard look at it. Im wondering, though, do some restaurant owners, food service workers, feel like, you know, why are we taking this is a larger problem than just restaurants. There are bigger reasons why the district has a rat problem well, actually, they will say the Food Service Industry is where the the rats go where the food is. And the grease you see these grease dumpsters behind restaurants. They can feed thousands of rats. Thousands of rats on a very small grease pot. And so, thats where the rats come from. There is one group that the Health Department tells us, homeowners make the mistake of putting their own trash out in plastic bags. I think i did this story 25 years ago. Homeowners should not put their trash out in containers that arent ratproof. You know, we have these big, fat, green containers in the city. Youre supposed to put your trash in there. The lids stay down. But if you leave the lid slightly open, rats get in there. They go to town. Exactly. But people put out plastic bags thinking, well, that will keep it safe. Rats go right through a plastic bag and then the food, it just emulsifies. One of the other things, boy, on everybodys mind, i think we can all agree there has been a seed change in how we view Sexual Harassment claims in the workforce. Yes. And its been everywhere, from hollywood to capitol hill to corporate america. Journalism. Journalism, of course, this week. Where do you guys, you know, based on your reporting, talking to folks, looking at history, where do we go from here . One of the things that stands out to a lot of people, stands out to me as well, is how so many people in thri jourmism, media and hollywood have lost their positions of power, but in congress, not everyone accused of Sexual Harassment quickly, promptly lost their jobs, and people saw a double standard there. Whats more, they learned, like we learned, that there is a pot of money that exists in the u. S. House that allows for taxpayerfunded settlements of sex harassment claims, including at least one member of congress in 2013, a lawsuit filed in the u. S. District court for the District Of Columbia. And so Blake Farenthold . Thats the one, congressman from texas. So theres pressure on congress to make some changes. There was a hearing in the House Administration committee where they can debate the merits of having this taxpayersubsidized system for funding settlements for members of congress. Will change happen . Possibly. Is it happening urgently, immediately . No. And also, theyre proposed by some members of congress that there be Sex Education or ethics training for people. Im just wondering, do you need another staffer . Its a different point. It underwrites a different point, which is true for the u. S. Congress distinctively and anybody who has a Family Member or friend who works for a congressional staffer. You know this already. But there are 535 members of congress who vote on capitol hill, meaning there are 535 Small Businesses that operate under very much their own rules, regulations and systems. If that member of congress doesnt have a sex harassment policy, the office doesnt have a sex harassment policy. There are very few overarching government guidelines and regulations on members of congress and how they function, how they function as employers. Some of these Sexual Harassment things, we call them harassment, they can be crimes. If there is a physical assault on a staffer, i dont care who you are, that could be a crime. And keep in mind, you have no shortage of young people with very limited professional experience who get their start working as congressional staffers and they might not have the Life Experience to know you cant do this this is against rules, potentially against the law. So there is a big picture is there ought to be and should be and will be more respect for women in all places in the workforce. Well, i think thats something we can all agree on and we all hope that is the case there will be consequences if theres not. Moving forward. All right. Tom sherwood, Scott Macfarlane, thank you for joining us and i hope you enjoyed this edition of reporters notebook. News4 today starts now. A good sunday morning to you great reporters notebook there. Now back to us with the news. Im adam tuss. Good morning to you. Im Meagan Fitzgerald. Were going straight to new videos just into our newsroom of a water main break in d. C. Take a look. Oh, yeah, the workers out there, avoid south dakota avenue northeast from randolph to 18th street in d. C. Police say they have closed that area due to a water main break. We are told water al its not clear how many people are affected or if the break is weatherrelated, but well stay on top of that for you. And the weather has obviously been a big concern, because after the snow yesterday, you start to worry about the temperature dropping a little bit. Yeah, exactly, and slick roadways, possibly, huh, lauryn . Yeah, were going to see those spotty black ice, patches of black ice as we continue through the morning. Winds will pick up after about 8 00 or 9 00 and were already starting to see gusts out there now, but that will help dry out some of the roads. Were at 34 degrees, so here in the district, that temperature has come up. Again, thats measured at Reagan National airport. I do believe well drop. We usually drop a little bit around 7 00, so back down into the low 30s, and then well head back to right around 40 degrees. But windchills this morning are going to be in the teens. Take a look at the snowfall totals yesterday. It was a gorgeous snow out there. Fairfax taking up 2 1 2. Here at Reagan National airport, we got about 2 inches but made records at all three area airports. This is the earliest snow that we have had since 2007. Didnt cause too many problems and it was pretty. But we have more snow in the tenday forecast. Ill show you that coming up in a few minutes. Lauryn, thank you. Time right now is 6 32 on this sunday morning. Lets get you caught up here on your top stories. Yeah, of course, we were talking about the snow. Lauryn just mentioning it. Hey, if you watch saturday night live enough, you know that any host who joins the fivetimers club, the yeah, but last night, host james franco says you get absolutely nothing when you host four times. The fourth time here, they dont even write you a monologue. They just throw you out here and make you take questions from the audience. Yeah. So, james franco took some questions from the audience only to discover that with enough time, some of your friends come out to hackle you. Do you see seventh rogth rogen out . He told james franco he had won the ticket lottery and wanted to host the show. I put my name in the lottery for tickets and this is the week i got. Just totally random. Luckily, im a huge fan, so it worked out. Yeah, thats really interesting because i asked you earlier in the week if youd come by and do a sketch with me and you told me, sorry, i have something. Yeah, i did have something. I had snl tickets. Even martin made guest appearances. On next weeks show, kevin hart will be hosting. James franco is just one away from getting that special jacket. Kevin hart will be funny. Thats fun to see all the buddies giving their friend a hard time. Yeah. We are just days away from a controversial special election happening in the south. Meanwhile, an attack is under way against special Council Robert muellers russia probe. Right. Those are just two of the big stories happening in another busy week of politics. You know its never a dull moment. Joining us now for insight is moderator of meet the press chuck todd. Good morning, chuck. Thank you for joining us. Good morning. Thank you. Lets talk about roy moore because you were in alabama this past week. That is a super controversial election. Hows this working out . Now you have the president making lastminute robocalls. Whats interesting is nobody likes this. You get go to iowa or south carolina, a president ial primary before normally a buzzing, and they actually always want to talk. Who do you thinks going to win . I think soandsos going to win. Everybody here was just like disgusted by it. The accusations are awful. You have one of the candidates accused of being a child molester, and its that you can tell they cant wait for it to be over, number one. But the angst is sitting there because this is a state that is deep red and there is antagonism as deep as some of the antagonism is to roy moore and those accusations, just having a d next to your name if youre a candidate down there, like doug jones, is enough to make peoples stomachs churn as well. So, thats the tension there, and people feel as if they have that their choice, you know, is sort of like a devils bargain. They just dont like the choices they have to deal with, so they cant wait for it to be over. Will they vote for moore or just not volt . Look, the sense i get is this, that the last chunk of un who will never vote for doug jones, okay . At the end of the day, theyre trying to decide if theyre going to show up at all. Right, yeah. Theyre not roy moore fans. They wish he wouldnt be there. Theyve decided theyre not going to pull the lever for a democrat. Do they go to the polls to do their duty and write somebody in . Do they hold their nose and vote roy moore, or do they stay home . If youre doug jones, youre really hoping they stay home. And what i sense from some of those moore voters, and this is where i think could tip this race to moore theyve been looking for anything to make them feel to make them more comfortable that the accusations might not be true. Right. So that Gloria Allred disaster right. And everything she touches usually can become a pr disaster, might be enough. Yeah. And if jones loses by a point, the blame goes to Gloria Allred. And its looking pretty close. Its looking like its going to be a tight race. It is. In football terms, roy moores got home field advantage, hes the threepoint favorite. Lets touch quickly on the counsel. Now it seems theres a team trying to discredit some of the stuff hes doing. How do you see this shaping up . The president s allies in the media over there at fox news are hammering mueller, almost laying the groundwork, almost trying to create a rationale so that if the president does decide to fire him, there isnt as big maybe theyre hoping there isnt as big of a firestorm, perhaps, among some as i think there would be if he did go down that road. But as it you know, look, we saw this i saw this a lot during the Monica Lewinski investigation. As things got closer to the white house, the attacks from the white house on ken starr heated up. Robert mueller is getting closer and closer to the president , right . Its not a coincidence that a week ago mike flynn flips, and all this week, the president s allies start beating up on mueller. Right. Why . Hes getting awfully close to the president. Right. The fbi, the lead investigator there was no, and look, that has been a piece thats sort of like Gloria Allreds done down in roy moore. Its like, heres something that feeds a conspiracy sure. That somehow, this fbi agent expressed personal political thought in a text message. Therefore, why is he investigating things . Like, that the implications of that down the road, that you know, when does personal political thought, you know, become unallowed anymore . But yes, theyre grabbing on to it, and you know, thats just a kernel of truth to reinforce a conspiracy can be very strong. A lot coming up on the show. Chuck, well be tuning in. Thanks for stopping by. You can see meet the press every sunday at 10 30. It comes up right here after news4 today. Well, from chuck to lauryn. Weve got to talk about the weather yeah. Because man, snow that was early for some snow around here. I know. It was nice to look at. It was gorgeous. It was gorgeous. Yeah, we havent had snow that early since 2007. We were breaking records at dulles. All three area airports, in fact. At Reagan National rp how about it . So, was beautiful out there. Did you get out and play . Absolutely. Rolled around in it. The kids, too. I had some ig neggnog. You and i now, the kids were able to make and make some snowmen . My 1 1 2yearold hit me with a snowball. He thought it was the funniest thing in the world. Cute. Yeah, it was. It was awesome. It was so wet, so much moisture in the air, so it was able to have that packing quality about it. Right. So, we do have some more snow in the forecast on that tenday forecast, and its coming sooner than you think. So, lets go ahead and get to the forecast right now. No snow out there today, besides what was left from yesterday, but main story today are going to be the winds. Winds are picking up right now and were going to see them increase as we go through the morning. You like that . [ laughter ] i heard you guys giggling over there. Watch for slick spots early this morning. Temperatures are below freezing most areas. Now, we do have more snow on Tuesday Morning and then a reinforcing shot of cold air coming our way. Thats going to be our next big change. Temperatures right now, you can see here in the district were above that freezing mark, but a lot of other places still below that freezing mark. So especially untreated surfaces, when you walk outside, especially on your porch, if you didnt treat that, down your stairs, watch out for that black ice. It could be a little slick. Definitely going to be a little blustery through the midmorning. Were already starting to see wind gusts up to about 25 miles an hour. We have the potential up to 30 miles an hour throughout the day today. Theyll die down later on this afternoon. So of course, we have to introduce a windchill. Right now windchills are in the 20s, but as we have that wind increasing, we can have windchills in the teens as we go through the morning. Now again, the snow is gone. Were clear out there. Were going to have sunshine out there today. Temperatures are going to be right around 0 40 degrees. Wouldnt be surprised if you see a few flurries. Tomorrow getting ready for school, a much lighter wind at the bus stop. Increasing clouds throughout tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening but dry tomorrow. Temperatures are going to be in the low 40s for your monday. Then we head into tuesday and well have a little bit of a mix. So monday were looking good. Again, the increase in clouds comes later on. Here we are heading monday overnight into Tuesday Morning, maybe some snow, maybe some sleet and some rain, so well have to watch for delays on Tuesday Morning. Otherwise, as we go into wednesday, another shot of cold air. Look at that temperature. A lot of areas not making it out of the 20s. Were going to have windy conditions on wednesday. Windchills are going to be in the teens through much of the day. Another chance of snow comes on thursday before we warup througm h streaming and gaming are only as good as your internet. Im Meagan Fitzgerald in for angie goff. Now the its beautiful out now, still cold. Yes. Then of course, we have to worry about the roadways, freezing temperatures. Yeah, thats the real concern is the chill. 34 degrees is what you see here, but lauryns got more on what our forecast will look like for today. Whats it looking like . Well, the thing today yesterday, the word of the day was snow. Today its going to be wind because the winds are going to be picking up. A blustery west wind. Gusts up to 25, possibly 30 miles an hour. So of course, with that, youll have blowing snow, maybe some flurries, and definitely some windchills. Going to feel more like the teens and 20s throughout the day. Beautiful morning, that sun coming up at 7 16, so about 14 minutes from now. But gorgeous. It looks cold out there right now. Current temperatures, as adam said, here in the district, Reagan National airport coming in at 34 degrees, but you step outside the beltway and thats where we have temperatures right below that freezing mark in a lot of the region. So again, sidewalks are slick, untreated roads are slick, even though i know they were out yesterday treating the roads and even the day before, but watch when you walk out your porch, because again, it is a we will continue to watch the temperatures come up as the winds also increase. More snow chances in your tenday forecast. Well talk about that in a few minutes. Say what . Say more snow . More snow. Okay. No way all right, well, well stick around for that. Thank you, lauryn. Some of the heavier bands of snow hit Southern Maryland. And news4 traveled all the way to st. Marys county, where snow totals reached 3 1 2 inches. Pretty good. Yeah. Our news4 crew stopped at the baymart Convenient Store and deli in ridge, maryland, and overall, people, well, theyre pretty excited about the snow. Down here, we take it as it comes. We enjoy the weather. I hadnt seen snow in 12 years. This time we took the brunt of it, from what i hear, down on this end. I dont know. I havent been up the road yet to see whats up there. We traveled up the road and it was pretty clear on the pavement. This storm was more decorative than dangerous, thankfully. But things werent so pretty for drivers in parts of virginia. Lets take a live look on i95 northbound in springfield here. This crew actually out there right now working on the road. Virginia state police say they have responded to more than 200 crashes yesterday, and many people this morning waking up without power. We talked with Dominion Energy overnight. We continue to talk to them and they tell us more than 3,500 customers are without power in northern virginia, while more than 13,000 are in the dark across the state. And a steady snow has blanketed most of the east coast. You can just see right there. The winter storm dropped more than a foot of snow on parts of Western North carolina. The National Weather service reported more than 14 inches of snow in burnsville, which is a few hours northwest of charlotte. The tristate is a blanket of snow as well. Youre looking right now at new york city. And listen to this, six flags in ocean county, new jersey, well, they had to cancel its plan for a giant snow ball fight all because of the snow. Go figure. Theres no word on injuries or a possible cause, but of course, well update you as we learn more information. And this morning, two men who served our communities are being remembered. A veteran agent with the fbi and a decorated member of marylands Fire Marshals Office. They were both killed along 270 on friday night. [ sirens ] those are sirens that you hear there from the procession that traveled through rockville last night. Police and firefighters escorted the body of lieutenant sander cohen as people saluted along the road. He grew up in rockville. He had been volunteering as a firefighter since he was 16 years old. Now, on friday night, he stopped to help fbi agent carlos wolff, who had crashed on 270. Both men were hit by a car as they waited for help on the side of the road. Cohens colleagues are still dealing with his loss. I think its really just his smile and his demeanor. Everybody here liked him. He brought a sense of comradery. He was very dedicated, very dedicated here. He worked a very demanding job, long days, and he would still come here and volunteer in his community. Black ribbons and bunting now drape the trucks cohen used to ride in and the gear that he wore to save lives. His funeral is expected to take place later this week. Meanwhile, the fbi is also mourning the loss of one of its o own. Yesterday it sent out a tweet offering condolee of special agent wolff. They say the veteran agent worked out of fbi headquarters in northwest d. C. Three others were hurt during the crashes friday night but theyre all expected to be okay. Maryland state police are still trying to figure out what caused all those accidents. And a fiveacre brush fire broke out in the hills of monrovia, california, saturday night. All homes on three streets are being evacuated. The fire was first reported at around 8 00 last night. An evacuation shelter has opened up for the residents who were displaced. Voters in alabama may be getting a call from President Trump. A white house official has confirmed to nbc news that the president reported a lastminute robocall for gop Senate Candidate roy moore. That official says the call was recorded yesterday afternoon and this comes one day after President Trump got on the stage and urged people to vote for moore. The support comes even as the candidate faces multiple accusations of sexual misconduct. Moore has largely denied all of those allegations, and he Democrat Doug Jones on tuesday in that special election there. Were going to mauck more about this with chuck todd coming up later on this morning. It is not what you want to see. Well, its something that you wont see on metro any time soon, that is. It is the Catholic Churchs ad, and its a promise to fight. What the Transit Agency refused to do and the court that just agreed to it. First, lets take you outside, where the district is covered in snow, but its a nice sunrise. Beautiful sky there. As we mentioned, Southern Maryland saw the brunt of that snow. Lauryn is back with a look at d en we coulsee some melting. All right, so, we all know how much fun kk be to play in the snow, but so do the animals living at the Smithsonian National zoo its so cute check it out. Adorable video here of one of the giant just going down the hill. The National Zoo Tweeted out this video of one of its giant pandas. This is mei xiang. She was rolling around inhe t snow yesterday, delighting anyone who was there to take that in. The zoo says most of its animals are selected check this one out. Wait for it. Wait for it. Down, all the way. Get this, most of the animals are selected based on their ability to enjoy our weather patterns here. You never know that. Theyve got to enjoy all four seasons. So sweet. So sweet. All right, hopefully, you get a chance to check out outside and enjoy the snow or just admire it from inside the house. Thats what i did. Yeah. Lauryn is pinpointing the next ten days and will let us know if we could see any more snow heading our way. Certainly looks nice. Well, hes the only person who can fire special counsel Robert Mueller, and hes speaking exclusively to news4. Were going to tell you how Deputy Attorney general rod gssenstein thinks thin are well its a perfect nespresso hold on a second. Orge. Mmm. [mel torme sings comin home baby] hey there. Want a lift . Where are we going . No dont tell me. Let me guess. Have a nice ride. For coffee thats a cup above . I brought you nespresso. Nespresso. What else . Well watch for spotty, black ice as you head out early this morning. A lot of the areas temperatures are at or just below the freezing mark. Now, we will have plenty of sunshine. The sun just coming up officially in two minutes. So sunshine out there today, but it is going to be a blustery day. Were going to talk about how low those windchills are going to be today and our next chance of snow, which is coming up sooner than you think. Tenday in about three minutes. Lauryn, thank you very much. The Justice Department official who appointed Robert Mueller and the only man who can fire mueller is speaking exclusively to news4. Deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein sat down with our Scott Macfarlane for a oneonone interview. And critics of this very highprofile investigation have called on rosenstein to shut it all down. In this interview with the news4 iteam, he indicated hes satisfied with how its actually progressing. Reporter from inside his Justice Department office suite, Rod Rosenstein oversees tens of thousands of federal employees and an enormous agency, but also one special assignment, the office of special counsel Robert Muellers investigation into russian meddling in the 2016 elections, which has already led to federal charges against four members of the Trump Campaign team, including former National Security adviser michael flynn. Only Rod Rosenstein is empowered to fire mueller, if he were dissated budget and tell people what theyve been doing to a degree. Youve seen the work, overseeing it. Are you satisfied with what youve seen so far from the office of special counsel . Yes. You know, when we conduct criminal investigations, as you know, just as is true in maryland, we dont talk about the investigations while theyre ongoing. So, what the American People will see is only if and when a case is charged, and there are several cases that have been charged to date, and were not in a position to talk about anything else that may be going on. Reporter the management and the administration of the office youre satisfied with so far . Yes, thats correct. The special counsel, as you know, has a degree of autonomy from the department of justice, but there is appropriate oversight by the department that includes budget, but it also includes certain other details of the office. It is part of the department of justice and were accountable for it. Reporter rosenstein is the official in charge because his boss, attorney general Jeff Sessions, recused himself. Sessions had been an active campaign surrogate for President Trump. For rosenstein, the assignment has made him he was for more than a decade a local man of power as u. S. Attorney in maryland. Its a much different job, a lot more scrutiny. Whats it like to be under such a different magnifying glass now . You know, its a very rewa rewarding job. Ive been with the department of justice for 27 years, and now im in the position of helping manage the department. Well, we reached out to the white house for reaction to rosensteins statement. White house attorney ty cobb sent this to us, saying in part, as ive routinely said, i have Great Respect for Robert Mueller. We remain committed to working with him toward a speedy and appropriate resolution. How about it . All right, so, from politics to weather and snow and just a smaller topic around here yesterday. Yeah, yeah. You know, just a tiny little topic. Just ait llet blip. Goodness, man. One inch around here gets people in a tizzy and some places got 5 1 2 inches . I think the biggest one i saw was 6. 2, in westminster, maryland, up ina up towards the masondixon line. Wow. But again, we had some hefty snow totals in Southern Maryland, 3, 4 inches. And then around here, d. C. , we had 2 inches, so hey, well take it it was beautiful. It was pretty. Very nice. So pretty last night. I was out and about. It was gorgeous. And weve got more snow on the way. Maybe what . A little bit of a mix as well. Yes, tis the season, as we continue through this december. Hopefully, we can get some snow for christmas this year. Its been a long time since weve had snow for christmas. But the way things are going, weve got a pretty cold pattern coming our way. Let me tell you right now, our next change is coming on wednesday. Thats going to be our next change. Beautiful out there as that sun just came up. Now, gusty winds today, thats going to be the main story. We do have more cold air coming. Thats going to be on wednesday. So, theres the change right there. We have some snow in the forecast. And then as we head towards sundaymonday of next week, a week from today, we start to get a little warmer. Temperatures move back into the 50s. Not today, though. We are slowly making it into the upper 30s and lower 40s for daytime highs. Door, especially untreated surfaces, the stairs, the railing. Again, some very patchy, slick spots out there. Now, winds are going to be increasing, and that will help dry out the roads, dry out some of that patchy, black ice. But again, we are going to have winds increasing after about 8 00 or 9 00. So weve got a little while, but then it will be blustery today. Windchills are going to be in 20s through much of the day. Id say after 4 00, those winds will start settling down. We dont have a lot of wind gusts reported right now, but again, we have the potential of having wind gusts up to 30 miles an hour, but theyll settle down after 4 00 or 5 00. Winds will not be an issue overnight or even tomorrow. So again, looking at the radar right now, not a lot going on. However, with these breezy winds, we could have a few flurries that float down into our region, so dont be surprised if you see that not accumulate to anything. Temperatures for today right around 40 degrees. For tomorrow, much lighter wind. Temperatures will be in the low 40s as well. Well have increasing clouds late, but tomorrow is going to be dry. Temperaturee the low 40s. Then as we head into tuesday, thats when we start to see that change, because we will have precipitation monday overnight into early tuesday. Were talking about some snow, maybe even a little bit of sleet. So again, that could cause some issues on Tuesday Morning. Otherwise, by wednesday, look at that temperature. Its going to be right around 30 degrees. Well be blustery, windchills in the teens on wednesday. Another chance of snow on thursday of next week. Weve got more news after this. Ick around. [lance] it is absolute chaos out here . Dont know if you can hear me, can we get a shot of this cold front, right here. [vo] progress is an unstoppable force. So, it probably wont surprise you to hear that the United States army has a huge selection of historic military artifacts, but also included in the armys collection is a painting by adolf hitler. Hmm. And the collection is kept right here at ft. Belvoir. News4s Mark Segraves got a behindthescenes look at hitlers art. Reporter this is no ordinary warehouse, and the contents are very far from ordinary. This is adolf hitler himself. Reporter in this nondescript building, some of the u. S. Armys most valuable artifacts. A militia jacket from 1810, canteens used by generations of soldiers. Among all this american history, four rather unremarkable paintings still in their original frames. Unremarkable but for the artist. These are four water colors by adolf hitler. Reporter thats right, these are works of after hitlers defeat at the end of world war ii, the u. S. Army seized thousands of pieces of german artwork that was considered to be propaganda. The idea of art as dangerous is the message behind it. The nazis used propaganda more effectively than anyone else in history. Reporter sarah forgi is the art cuter at the center for military history. The fear is that it might rekindle nazism. Reporter art that compared hitler to john the baptist. This painting is titled in the beginning is the word, making the connection between hitler as the speaker of nazi propaganda and john the baptist as the speaker of holy words. Reporter while the art has been displayed in the past, its not often seen by the public. One person who did get an upclose look at the collection is andrew bojan who wrote about the nazi art for washingtonian magazine. Its so creepy. Its so odd to be that close to something was the architect of the holocaust actually made himself, and its also really weird looking at the paintings, just how devoid of life they are. Reporter thousands of pieces that were seized by u. S. Soldiers have since been returned to germany, but the army still has 586 pieces. And remember that huge bust of hitler . It was found when u. S. Soldiers took hitlers eagles nest. As for why keep or display nazi art . When you look at the stuff, it reminds you that nazism worked by stoking peoples feelings. It wasnt an ideology that was really concerned with facts. So, looking at the feelings that that generated, its really important, i think, to study how they did it, how they got people to believe a certain way. Reporter now generations after world war ii, art once used as a weapon to engender hate now held at bay on a military base where few Mark Segraves, news4. How fascinating is that . Great piece by mark. 7 26 right now. Hey, hate to break it to all the kids out there, youre probably not going to have a snow day tomorrow. I know. Yeah. Such a disappointment, im sure, for a lot. But the bus stop is going to be cold in the week ahead. Lauryn ricketts is back with a look at that and the rest of your forecast. 7 26. Well be right back. It is a home that needs a lot of work. Beautiful sunrise sun coming up. Weve got a little bit of snow on the ground. Yes. Gives you that lustry, beautiful look. Feels like the holidays, right . Not clear how many people are affected or if this break is weather related. But you know, the weathers playing tricks on a lot of people because were going up and were going down and we had snow and weve got to worry about the freezing. Yep, icy roads.
