Blayne alexander on capitol hill. Now first at 4 00, search teams scour a stretch of i95 looking for the remains of a woman killed eight years ago by her boyfriend. Our Mark Segraves broke that news that the search would happen there today and tonight hes live along i95 in stafford county. Mark, you watched the search today with pamela butlers brother. That had to be nerve wracking. What was that like . Reporter yeah, leon, ill tell you, we stood shoulder to shoulder on the overpass as the search teams went for more than two hours. Let me give you a look from chopper4 which is up above us live right now. Were at mile marker 140 on i95. This was actually closer to the second location that teams searched today in the median strip between the northbound and the southbound lanes that youre looking at right now. But as you said, pamela butlers brother derek butler was down here early this morning, even before search hoping and holding out that hope that theyd find his sisters remains. The search team got started just after 10 00 this morning. Derek butler was already there, hoping after more than eight years, he would finally be able to bring his sister home. Mixed emotions, hoping that we would come up with something and be kind of be able to move past the point where we are. Reporter investigators targeted two locations along this stretch of i95 in stafford, virginia. The first location, mile marker 147, where dogs searched the grassy area between the southbound lanes and the express lanes. As derek butler watched patiently from a nearby overpass. After about two hours, the search moved south, about seven miles to this location near exit 140, and derek butler followed along. So, right now as we speak, derek butler is meeting with homicide detectives to get his own update about what happened out here during todays search. We can tell you that at one point at the first location, they did get out a shovel, they did look around, but it did not appear like they found anything conclusive. One of the things that frustrated todays search is that all of this landscape has changed dramatically since eight years ago when cruz said he actually buried pamela butlers body down here. There has been the improvement of the express lanes, irrigation ditches and the service road that was the cut through. That has since been paved over. So, theyre holding out hope, but even derek butler knows it is probably unlikely that they found anything that would get them any closer to bringing his sister home. That is the very latest. Erika, back to you in the station. Hey, mark, let me ask you this. The suspected killer pled guilty if he could lead police to the remains of pamela butler. So, if that changes and they do not find her, what happens . Reporter yeah, and i actually talked to derek butler about that. The plea agreement actually does not specify that they actually have to find her remains. Only he has to make the best effort to lead them to the location. The prosecutors and the search team are able to determine they believe this actually is the location where her body was buried, but theyre unable to actually recover it, that would more than satisfy the plea agreement. And then, yes, he would only have to serve 12 years. And i asked derek butler about that. He said he wouldnt be happy about that. He would have to live with that, but as you know, there is a second investigation for the search for cruzs first wife who was reported missing long before pamela butler. Derek butler told me today he may take up that cause because he never wants to see jose streets ever again. Erika . Such a difficult story and a delicate search underway right now. Mark segraves, thank you. All right, right now at 6 00 major wildfires are out of control. This is in kpcalifornia. Embers on rooftops turning entire communities to ash.
