Friends on wtop 103. 5 when you hop in your car. 5 01. A neighborhood is on high alerpt after a possible bear attack. And news4s Megan Mcgrath is in great falls this morning. Reporter good morning. There have been several bear sightings in the great falls area including behind the firehouse. Take a look at this still photo that was taken. A bear is walking around. Actually, the back side of the bear going behind that stone structure. It is also believed that a bear attacked a dog on river park lane earlier this week. Well now later on today, trail cameras are going to be installed in the area near that attack. Animal control officials trying to gather more information get a handle on exactly what theyre dealing with here and try and track the bears movements and see if maybe theres more than one bear thats in the area. Now, on tuesday, 6yearold a 6yearold lab named blue was found with claw marks on her side. Her owner initially thought that she was attacked by a raccoon and when the veterinarian looked at the wounds that vet said no they think it was most likely a bear that attacked the dog. Blues family very concerned about what happened as you would imagine. This was this apparently took place in their yard and theyre concerned about the safety of their children. Actually, limiting the childrens activities in the yard. Now, heres the rule of thumb here. If you see a bear, do not approach it. Try to make yourself look larger and back away, facing the bear. But a lot of folks on edge and want more information and experts are trying to get more information with the installation of these cameras. Back to you in the studio. Thank you. 5 02. Charles county investigators are looking into the officer involved shooting. Deputies responded to a home on Charlton Court for a domestic incident last night. They found a man waving a knife around and threatening to kill himself. Deputies say he eventually moved toward them and thats when one of them fired. The witnesses say that officer did not have to shoot. He had both hands in the air. Was this a justified shooting . I dont think they had to shoot him, no. Why not . Because he was nowhere near them and he wasnt lurching towards them or anything. He was threat to himself. The man survived but it is not clear whether hes been charged. The deputy who fired is a nineyear veteran of the force and has been reassigned. An update now to the breaking story we brought you at this time yesterday. We know now what led up to the shooting on the g. W. University campus. Devon holland stole a car and tried to hit a Police Cruiser with it. Holland and a younger boy started to run away and the officer shot at them the bullet did not hit anyone. Police arrested both holland and the boy. They charge holland with assaulting an officer and unauthorized use of a car. New charges against a man accused of beating a boy to death. Second degree murder and child neglect was added to his charges. Wilson beat jack garcia last month because he ate a piece of birthday cake without asking. Garcias mother and uncle are facing murder charges for the boys death. Today, a man accused of killing three prominent residents is headed back to court. Today, just this morning, this is his first visit to the country since taking office in february. President obama has said if lawmakers reject the deal, he will veto their decision. Isis is now a bigger threat to National Security than al qaeda. Fbi director james comey made those comments at the Aspen Security Forum in colorado. He said the use of social media by isis to inspire americans to violence here at home is a bigger threat than external attacks plotted by al qaeda overseas. When asked if chattanooga gunman abdulazeez may have been inspired by isis he said we dont know yet. And last month the federal Transit Administration issued a scathing review of metro. Investigators want to ensure that justice is served here. New booking documents show bland told police she had tried to kill herself in the past after losing a baby. Blands family rejects claims she she suffered from Mental Health issues. This story has a lot of people wondering what their rights are if theyre pulled over. No one wants to see a situation escalate, but no one wa have their rights violated either. News4 spoke to the local aclu chapter to get a better sense of what is lawful. The legal director wouldnt comment on the bland case specifically, but he told us cooperation is key to making sure any situation doesnt escalate. He also gave us this general advice. You have a right to remain silent and you can do that. You shouldnt get out of your car if youre not asked to get out of your car and try to engage in an argument with the officer. But if he tells you to show license and registration, show your license and registration. Now the aclu recommends turning on your interior lights in your car. Rolling down your windows halfway. And putting both hands on the Steering Wheel to allow the officer to do his or her job well. Today in annapolis, theres a big rally to talk about police reform. They want to increase Community Policing and limit abuse. The people in charge of a baltimore event now say that they will not put on a show that features a person in black face. A former Baltimore Police officer wants to put that show on to raise money for the officers charged in freddie grays death. He said he sold more than 600 tickets however, a big wave of backlash led the venues to cancel the performance according to the Baltimore Sun. A lawyer for the indicted officers said they would not accept any money from the show. A bold burglar will spend more time after a rash of burglaries. Researchers in new york say almost 300,000 veterans still suffering from the effects of their time in vietnam. It has been 40 years since that war. The new study says there are twice as many veterans with deteriorating Mental Health than those with improving symptoms. Well, People Living with Cystic Fibrosis got a huge helping hand. Here at the live desk were working to find out more about two teenagers arrested after five of their family members were found dead. The victims were found in a house along with a child who is now in Critical Condition. This is in broken arrow, outside of tulsa. The teenagers 16 and 18 years old were arrested near that house where the bodies were found. A Police Sergeant telling nbc news the crime scene has taken a heavy toll on Police Officers and that this is just unprecedented in the city of broken arrow. A witness called 911 but said it took too long for them to respond. Thats because there are no markers marking where you are on that trail. The perfect solution is to get as much information on the trail to let people know where they are. In response to the concerns d. C. Emergency Officials Say they added gps coordinates to landmarks along the trail. They plan to add mile marker signs as a long term solution. Today, president ial candidate donald trump heads to texas. Trump will meet with Border Control agents along the border in laredo to discuss immigration. We are learning that the afl cio controlled union that represents Border Control agents has cancelled a planned tour of a section of the border. Trump has made immigration a key part of the recent Campaign Speeches and others are now on the attack against trump. Democrats are calling it the donald trump bill. Lawmakers are expected to vote today on a bill that will hold back federal Law Enforcement money from states or local governments that dont cooperate with federal immigration agents. Scott lunger was shot and killed. The officer pulled over the driver of a car that he stop that he spotted swerving. The man thought to have ties with a gang in the area fired without warning and the officer shot back. The man is being treated after being shot. He is expected to be okay. Lunger had been on the job for 15 years. The gunman who confessed to shooting nine people in South Carolina may face the Death Penalty. A grand jury indicted dylann roof on dozens of federal charges and that included 12 counts of committing a hate crime. A trial date has been set for july of 2016. In news4 your health a new study has an explanation for what seems to be a surge in autism cases here in the united states. Researchers at penn state believe that theres actually not been a big increase in cases. Instead, they say doctors are using autism to refer to more conditions than they used to. The researchers believe thats responsible for 97 of the increase in the disease. It looks like more d. C. Students will be able to pay for college through a popular Tuition Assistance program. Police say that 9yearold Desmond Holmes died earlier this week. His brother quincy died one day before. The boys are from Fairfax County. They were in a car on a rural road when an suv crossed the center line and crashed into them head on. The two other people in the car with the boys are in Critical Condition now. A woman opened up to us about how she was stabbed in southeast d. C. The woman says that she was biking on 17th Street Southeast near Congressional Cemetery when a man stabbed her in the shoulder. Its not clear why that happened. The man didnt take anything from her. The woman did not want to show her face on camera. I just moved to the area and it makes it a little harder for me. To be comfortable. Still scared . Mmhmm. The woman said she plans to stop biking to work in the future. Two parents in new mexico are facing charges for throwing a lit fire work at a homeless man. We want to show you some video. Its a bit blurry, but you can see a flashing light right after a purple van drives by. Albuquerque police say thats the fire work they threw at the man and they say they regret that they did. I want to apologize to my children and my family and to the man who was hurt. It was just a prank. That was it. Police also charged the parents with child abuse. They say the couples 12yearold, 10yearold and 2yearold were all in the car at the time. The proposal gives the department of Homeland Security more resources to prevent and respond to a hack. Warner wants more consistency and protection of those dot gov sites. But right now the Harpers Ferry station not accessible because of all the fire equipment. Thank you. 5 53 and now to a new clue in the search for the gunman who shot at two security guards in Prince Georges County. Detectives found the suspected get away car on 45th street at ken ill worth avenue yesterday. The suspects are still on the run. Someone shot the guards around mid night as they sat in their cars at the central garden apartment complex in capitol heights. One of the guards died and Police Believe the men were targeted. A man wanted in the connection with the massive car theft ring is in custody. Oluwasheun morrisey turned himself in. Swails and felder are still on the run. Most were rounded up and indicted last week and police say they stole purses, phones and other valuables from cars while owners pumped their gas. It operated in Prince Georges County over the past six years. Supervisors have to make the deal by the end of july and theyre still waiting to hear back from the owner of the hagerstown sun. The supervisors want to keep negotiating but the owner said he sent his final offer earlier this month. Tom brokaw is getting behind the effort to build a memorial to president dwight eisenhower. He is joining an Advisory Committee for the project along with former senator bob dole. Brokaw says he learned while writing about world war ii that veterans very much want to see eisenhower honored. Design and funding problems have slowed down the project though. Some big improvements headed to half a dozen metro stations in maryland. Big developers descended on college park yesterday to reveal their plans. The developers are looking to build a 300unit and Retail Development near the college park metro. County officials are looking at five other proposed project sites. The develops are happening in the county and it shows this is really the economic engine of the washington region and the state of maryland.
