We have heard that he first started dealing with depression when he was 12 13 years old. He went to rehab within the first year. We talk about people reaching out for help and thats what he did. What sets some people apart from others . In terms of getting better, i think what you have to keep in mind is that psychiatry is like other fields of medicine. Some people will get better and some people will not. There are some critical factors just like heart surgery, you want to see the heart surgeon who has perform seconddegreeed the surgery over and over. You want to seek help from people who have a lot of experience in treating your conditions. You have to see the right person and if youre on medication, you have to be on the right medication at the right dose. There are all these factors. Then there are all the other factors that could be involved. Things like how supportive is your family . Are you compliant with the treatment thats being recommended . Are you experiencing a chaotic environment . No matter what, if youre taking medications or youre seeking help but theres chaos around you, its hard to get better. It seems like his family was supportive. Im going to ask you the question. What if you cant get the help. His family tried to have him committed but a Health Insurer refused the expense. What should people do when they encounter financial roadblocks. This is a major problem. A lot of providers do not participant with insurance. I have three pieces of advice. The first one is set up an appeal with your insurer so theres always an avenue for you to appeal the decision from the insurance get a letter from your insurer and document. All your interchanges so you have a better chance of getting the treatment you need. The other thing is, you want to reach out to some universities or Training Programs because oftentimes these places will offer things on a sliding scale. It might normally be 200 to see somebody, theyll charge you maybe 50 because youre seeing somebody whos in training and being supervised by someone with a lot more experience. And then reach out to your local Mental Health community center. They see people without insurance or on a sliding scale. If youre seeing somebody who doesnt have experience with people in your cultural background background, that can be a barrier to treatment. One thing i recommend we live in a multicultural city here, reach out to your countrys embassy. Find out who they are sending their people to. That will be someone with experience with people from your country. And quickly warning signs that people may need to be on the lookout for. What do they need to keep their eyes and ears peeled for. What are they saying in if theyre young and male if they have a history of violence and using drugs you have to be on high alert and if they have guns, you need to get rid of the guns no matter what.
